What I like about old school bands like the Stones is: They're performing musicians; they got good by playing hundreds of gigs every year. Each player's part is loose, with lots of little intricacies that wouldn't be played twice in exactly the same way. This studio track (which they're miming to, here) may've involved some overdubs, and some editing; but for the most part, it's a performance. The drums & bass & guitars aren't calculated down to the note - they just come out the way they come out, for each take. It's very spontaneous, organic and feely. This more than makes up for the fact that it's fairly simple music. And they really _put out_ - as cool & blasé as these guys may act, they're focused and into it.

There were hits after "Start Me Up", but this was perhaps the last great commercial 'Rolling Stones' success. Starting life as a reggae song, it came suited and booted with Keith Richards' dirty riff and Jagger's smutty strut.

It’s great to see you getting into the Stones. I saw them in Newcastle, UK, in 1982 and they seemed like an old band even then. I guess they were since they started in the 60s. My favourite by them is Midnight Rambler, particularly the live version. Of the popular ones, I plump for Paint It Black and Miss You.

Nice reaction Angela, nice to see a pretty lady like you enjoying those amazing Rolling Stones, who I have enjoyed since 1964. 🎸They needless to say have a huge catalog and there is plenty to like. Saw them in a massive football stadium years ago and the electricity in there was incredible. Try lyric videos for Gimme Shelter, Monkey Man and Sympathy for the Devil. They are really well done and recently released in this form by the Stones, imaginative use of letter imagery. Enjoy! 😎
