Why is Thursday called Thursday? Why is Saturday Saturday? While many recognize Thursday as being derived from "Thor's Day" in reference to the Norse God, the names for the other days of the week are also rich in meaning.

In the Irish language, Gaelic, the third day of week - Tuesday in English - is De Mairt. Here is some more info: First, the basics If you simply need to recite the days of the week, here is what you would say: Dé Luain (Jay LOO-in): Monday Dé Máirt (Jay march): Tuesday Dé Céadaoin (Jay KAY-deen): Wednesday Déardaoin (JAY-ar-deen): Thursday Dé hAoine (Jay HEEN-yeh): Friday Dé Sathairn (Jay SA-ha-rin): Saturday Dé Domhnaigh (Jay DOH-nee): Sunday

Hi, The question remains, why chose the planet, sun, moon names? Where does the sequence come from? what is the logic behind the sequence? The answer is found in the ancient Indian astronomy. It clearly explains the sequence, why chose these heavenly bodies / Astronomical Objects (AOs). I will give a quick explanation here. A lot of people may not understand it because of its astronomical & calculative nature. AOs in a sequence - Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon. These AOs are put in sequence of their revolution period with respect to an observer on the planet earth. You can check and confirm. Basically count from 1st AO to 24th AO in the above AO sequence in cyclic manner, next 1st AO will be the following day in cyclic manner. In Indian astronomy every 1st AO is the lord of the day and 2nd to 24th are lord of the hours in exact translations from works of Aryabhatta and in Surya Siddhanta (indian ancient text of astronomy older than 3000 BCE or perhaps 5500 BCE as calculated based on the recorded observations in it) I will give names in Indian Sanskrit. You will see clearly all AOs' names are in weekdays in a logical sequence in Indian weekday names. 1st day - Saturn / Shani (Saturday / Shani-vaar) (since Count 24th is Mars and count 1st is Sun) 2nd day - Sun / Ravi (Sunday / Ravi-aar) (again count from Sun as 1st to 24th as Mercury. means following 1st will be Moon in sequence) 3rd day - Moon / Som (Monday / Som-vaar) (again count from Moon as 1st to 24th as Jupiter. means following 1st will be Mars in sequence) 4th day - Mars / Mangal (Tuesday / Mangal-vaar) similarly follow the above calculation. 5th day - Mercury / Budh (Wedneday / Budh-vaar) 6th day - Jupiter / Guru (Thursday / Guru-vaar) 7th day - Venus / Shukra (Friday / Shukra-vaar) next week 1st day - Saturn / Shani (Saturday / Shani-vaar) . . . Let me know if you have any questions

You’ve got a mistake in the Latin name for Thursday. It’s Dies Iovis with an I or Dies Jovis with a J, but absolute not dies Lovis with an L! Initial I in Jupiter’s name was pronounced as a “y” sound and is sometimes represented with a J.

It's interesting that the W. Germanic languages all seem to have adopted Saturn for Saturday. Roman influence there? The Scandinavians, on the other hand, stuck with it being the rather more practical Wash Day.

It’s Dies Iovis, not Dies Lovis. J later developed from I, giving us the more familiar Jovis and Jove.

This is a very good video except for the glaring of 'Lovis.' It's a capital "i" in Latin, which later becomes a "j". That's why the name for Thursday in Romance languages is Jueves, Jeudi, Giovedì.

The image of Saturn eating a child in going to haunt me now. Also, you didn’t pronounce Þūnresdæg.
@garreth629
@garreth629 2 жыл бұрын
It was that image that made me remember Saturn was the equivalent to Cronus. That's Saturn (Cronus) eating one of his own children. He ate five of his children and thought he had eaten his sixth child Jupiter (Zeus). He would later be forced to throw up those children by Jupiter once he grew older. After that the siblings would overthrow Saturn and banish him to Tartarus, basically the deepest depths of hell.

More on days of the week in Irish/Gaelic: So where did these names come from, anyway? If you’ve studied a language such as French or Spanish, some of these names may have a familiar feel. We don’t know if the ancient Irish had special names for each day of the week, but the names in use today came from Latin. Some of the names come from ancient Roman pagan practice: Dé Luain = Moon Day (From the Latin “luna”: Moon). Dé Máirt = Mars’ Day (From the Roman god Mars). Dé Sathairn = Saturn’s Day (From the Roman god Saturn). Other names come from early Christian practice, and were almost certainly brought to Ireland by the monks: Dé Céadaoin = Day of the first fast Déardaoin = Day between the fasts Dé hAoine = Day of the [primary] fast These three came from the monastic practice of fasting on Wednesday and Friday. Dé Domhnaigh = Day of the Lord (from the Latin “dominus”: lord)

I don't mean to undermine the Christians but this should help you in your faith. If you have ever said "Thank god it's Friday." And even if you are a great Christian and do many wonderful things know this you have openly blasphemed the lord your god. And assumed you never have and that assumption will place you in hell. Think of all the people who died believing and have never read this post or any like it? Narrow is the path. Much more narrower than the strong in faith could have ever known.

Syriel Moon unfortunately Christians seem to pray to the “Holy Trinity” not God. So many think they are only praying to one god, yet if you ask any Christian if they Pray to Jesus, they will say the holy trinity, not God. So you are right that there is no “Christian God” there are 3, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; most Christians like to think of it as one. In which case what separates Christianity from the Norse Odin who literally has 3 names? Also, wouldn’t Allah simply mean All Father, just very poorly spoken in English tongue.
