as they themselves admitted, the Romans may have conquered Greece with weapons, but Greece conquered them with its superior culture.

@@kevinkibble8342 Uhm hardly. Greek civilization was banned most of the time because of its pagan background. Only during the last centuries of the empire, in its decline(especially after the schism with Western Rome) it started being tolerated and assimilated to the Christian Roman identity.

The Byzantines didn’t call themselves Byzantines. They referred to themselves as Roman. The name “Byzantine Empire” was a name given to those Romans by historians because Constantinople sat on the Ancient Greek city of Byzantium.

Great video although I have to object and state that city states did not usually have kings. They were ruled either by a council of Oligarchs or they had Democratic-like government. The exception of course being Sparta.

The Hellenized peoples of the eastern Roman (later Byzantine) Empire consistently referred to themselves as 'Roman' (Romaioi) because, even though they were culturally Greek, they considered themselves a part of the Roman Empire. Barnett, G. (2017) Emulating alexander: How alexander the great's legacy fuelled Rome's wars with Persia. Barnsley: Pen et Sword Military.

They called themselves Romans simply because they were conquered by the Romans and thus were Romanised in time, being converted to the globalised Christian Roman identity of their conquerors. Pure and simple!!

By the time the Romans showed up, Greece was dead on its feet as far its old classical era self went...they were some signs of a growing support for federalism but these were late and well, simply too late.

It could be said that the 'barbarian' western empire especially theFrankish and Gothic leaders, were a continuation of "Roman" culture. The Germanic tribes had long been assimilated into the army and established within the borders of the empire. Aetius's army was more a barbarian confederation than a Roman force when it repelled Atilas hord. The Byzantine Eastern empire,took on a more Greek than Roman character as time passed.

@user-ik8nm2rr2e5 күн бұрын
You are wrong. The Macedonians allied with Hannibal in 215, not the Romans. The Romans naturally saw this as a stab in the back and went to war with Macedon in alliance with several Hreek states and ahain in 200 BC

Romans were Greeks 2.0 (Nex Generation) who unified with the original Greeks 1.0 and formed the Roman Empire that lasted 1.5 + millennium.
@jimakisspd7 ай бұрын
Uhm no. BS. The Romans were barbarian conquerors of the Greek cities and kingdoms, pure and simple!!! To try to Hellenise them makes as much sense as trying to hellenise Persians.

The whole of Greece was under foreign rule for many centuries,starting with the Roman conquest in the second century BC. What distinguishes the Ionian Islands from the rest of Greece is that, with some exceptions, they did not form part of the Ottoman Empire, while the rest of the Greek world was under Ottoman rule for anything between two hundred and five hundred years. The fact that these islands were ruled by Catholics rather than Muslims has made them strikingly different from the rest of Greece, in language, music, costume, cuisine and architecture. Hirst, A. and Sammon, P., 2014. The Ionian Islands. p.2.
