Gotta love how long the Romans held onto the Hoplite style. Albeit, a tad bit unusual in comparison to the more traditional Hellenic Hoplites.

Keep the tried and tested way as a backup incase this new way don't work

A reason you did not cover to have spear armed troops in the rear was their function as a rear-guard. The type of enemy that can most likely circle around to attack your rear is cavalry, and spear-armed troops are better equipped to deal with this eventuality than sword-armed troops.

Love this video 🎉 I hope this channel only receives successes in the future. It’s a shame how history has been declining in KZbin, probably thanks to yt shorts. This is my first video for this channel, but it definitely will not be the last!

Thankyou! There has been a decrease in revenue compared to when I started but that's mostly due to youtube trying to be a bit more on it when it comes to weapons. History channels aren't the only ones that got affected by this, Star wars channels for example got quite badly hurt by this as well. It's ultimately all about making content that fits within the parameter youtube sets and as I don't talk about 1930s germany I don't really suffer from the demonetization that a lot of youtubers do. Only problem is that that era gets a lot of views so you have to balance out views and growth and income basically.

I'm curious about Camillus' thought process where despite the military reform to remove the weaknesses of having a phalanx based unit still maintained a phalanx based unit - heck, even used as a last line of reserves - still being used after the reform.
@AncientHistoryGuy Жыл бұрын
I guess having a backup of the tried and tested incase his new infantry didn't work makes sense
@Jauhl16 ай бұрын
The phalanx was tactically inflexible but still had advantages. The Triarii spearwall served as a defensive anchor. Which could stabilize a gap in a buckling line or allow the standard infantry to reform behind it or fall back in order without being routed.

"Down to the Triarii" was a a Roman saying, equating to "Down to the elite reserves." I imagine a General saying that to one of his sub commanders.
@AncientHistoryGuy Жыл бұрын
Yup! And the Rorarii!
@Rasterizing7 ай бұрын
And that answers the reason for only one guarded leg/knee being armoured. "it all comes down to the Triarii"

Great video! do you know the approximate ratio between bronze cuirasses and iron cuirasses used within this era?
@AncientHistoryGuy Жыл бұрын
Thankyou, and truth I don't know! But a majority would most likely have been bronze.

How do you think Triarii (say 1000) would fare against say a Spartan hoplite units (say also 1000)?
@AncientHistoryGuy Жыл бұрын
Depends on the era/battleground. Around this time the triarii were more heavily armoured than their spartan counterparts so you could say that would have given them the edge plus more flexibility than a regular phalanx
@bombasticbadassbrigade3552 Жыл бұрын
@@AncientHistoryGuy do we have any examples of ho0w they fared against Greek style hoplites? We know the history of Pyrrhus and the Macedonian wars etc...
