This book is definitely of a piece with the other continental Modernist writers. Did you find the references to Goethe’s Faust, particularly those characterizing Bertrand as a sort of Mephistopheles, to be persuasive?

Matthew I have only one book by Broch. It is called The Spell but I haven’t yet read it. I may now. But I have to tell you that I just started Paris Spleen and I am enthralled this far! The Double Room just floored me. I can’t thank you enough!!! Talk with you soon....... Paul

I’d never heard of Brock so thanks for introducing me to a new author Matthew. It’s raining here too and I would love to be sitting and reading all day, your day sounds wonderful. I’m working right now but hopefully this evening I can settle down and continue with my Elizabeth Gaskell biography, immersing myself in Victorian life for a while.

Apart from having no pets at the moment, I could relate to every word you said in your introduction. I am on vacation with friends at the moment and it's great, but already for two days now, there has been no quiet time to read and it drives me mad.
