I still find it difficult to square Kanami's overwhelming stage prescence with this slightly awkward ' 16 year old' persona off stage. She is no air head and her talents are prodigious. Thank heavens she is ego free and having said all that I find her totally endearing.

I think they all play a role in front of the camera and are very different in their personal lives. Misa, for example, is always very cold and distant on stage. (Or shy) In private she is a fun person who is always ready to crack jokes and pranks.

When you get them out, the differences in personality pop out. Saiki has a much more sultry and slower voice than the rest. She is very deliberate and matter of fact. She sounds more like a 30's or 40's movie lead actress with her speech pattern.

Miku and Band-Maid worked hard on promoting themselves for many years, and Miku still show up every time there is an opportunity to show her face and talk about Band-Maid. I believe this hard work and their vision has got thru to many people :-) This was a great interview, if possible I fell even deeper into the pigeon hole of Band-Maid. They are soooooooooooooo adorable. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to meet all of them at three different concerts back in 2019 before the pandemic started. It's no surprise that Miku was the most talkative, most smiling, most laughing, most funny one when I met them. So why do people in Tokyo look at the girls coldly if they walk on the street? This is because of the Maid Cafe Culture in Akihabara in Tokyo. They are escort/entertainment outlets where men (and women) can meet and interact with maids (eg be served, play chess, talk, laugh, read Manga together, or be entertained by super cute maid personas). It's sensual and intimate, but never erotic. No erotic interactions are permitted between the maids and their customers, and the maids never reveal their true names. The maids address their customers as their house masters and serve them coffee, drinks or food. They serve both men and women and tourists are mostly welcome. Loneliness is a huge problem in Tokyo and the cute maids are a fun and safe outlet for many people to hang out with and have innocent fun, after a hard day's work. A visit to a Maid Café costs around 2000-2500 yen per hour and if you walk the streets in Akihabara, somewhere between the Manga and the videogame stores, you'll see so many cute and beautiful maids waiving at you. They advertise these cafés in the open, holding a sign with the prices. As a result, many people on Tokyo can be annoyed by the maid uniform, because the maids are everywhere in that district! So they get the same kind of treatment a geisha (artist) would get in times past. That's why he asks them if they are comfortable walking around in uniform. And they reply "we go as maids", plus "this is not Tokyo". Band Maid have adopted the visual aspect of the Akihabara Maid Culture (kawaii maids) and the Maid Lolita Culture, and they made this into their trademark. Also their slogan, "welcome masters" refers to the greeting a Maid traditionally gives to their Maid Café customers. Miku chan proudly admits she has worked as a maid in the past po, while the rest deny it and quickly move on with the interview. In reality a large number of university students have worked part time as maids in Akihabara, so it's a reality for young women in Tokyo and elsewhere in Japan.

@HVAC Quality Assurance Don't trust that shit, these "documentaries" want you to think Japan is some distopian society. People in Japan do have human contact, even more than a lot of places in Europe or the west in general, Japan has more of a culture of sharing and drinking together. Workers go out after work with their coworkers to bars everyday, lots of clubs and social activities for students, lots of meeting places for young adults to practice activities together... Almost everyone has something they do other than work or studies. You might think living in a small place is "sad" but when you have a big population living in a small region in a small island then you don't really have a choice. People that recluse themselves are everywhere, maybe in Japan they can live normally with their situation unlike everywhere else where they would be forced to either change or live a tragic life as a socially disabled and outlier in society.

As let's say BabyMetal, Scandal, One Okay Rock, X-,Japan. Although X are rock Legends so that's probably not a fair comparison. Why aren't they frontliners at festivals? Some say it's their maid theme holding them back but I say horseshit to that. BabyMetal are Ironclad samurais & that sure in the hell hasn't hurt them any lol. Maybe the promotion just isn't there I don't know. However considering we don't have many female metal bands either which get much respect. So not playing the white knight. I'm really just stating realities within both countries. Credit should be given where it's due regardless where they reside. Maybe in Japan they see it as a gimmick. Not seeing them as world-class musicians which they are. Babymetal wasn't really that well-known either in Japan until they got big elsewhere. Then things changed but who knows. Sorry you took it the wrong way. :/
