The Roots album Things Fall Apart is what got me into hip hop. I picked that album up on a whim for no reason at all and it was probably one of the best things I've ever done. I love their jazz background on a lot of their earlier work.

Same here! Same album. I think I heard about them being an actual hip-hop BAND which intrigued me. Funny thing is I listened to it a couple of times and didn't get it. It got shelved for probably six months and when I listened then it just floored me how great it sounded.

This group got me into hip hop-being a Brit who grew up with rock and prog and punk heard from my dad and my high school friends, I was always into the music more than lyricism, but eventually in my teens I came round to understanding where the talent was in hip hop-in the djs, in the lyrics-the wordplay, assonance etcetc...after getting into these guys coz they were a band, totally made me visit the history of rap and hip hop-flash, to tribe to wu tang and others in between... so it’s great to go back to the Roots and appreciate the lyricism over the music , as in listening to it as pure hip hop rather than a band if that makes sense..Black thought definitely up in my top 5 rappers and I’ve pushed his stuff on so many people lol...

@JP-nz7eu7 жыл бұрын
Just got into this channel yesterday and haven't been able to stop watching videos. Black Sabbath one is definetly my favorite reaction til now. Just simply exciting to see you guys feel that song, get into it, and even if out of your natural habitat, be able to notice the different references and nuances the song makes through out it. Not only does it show free thinking, but great musical wit as well. Shout out for that. Curiously, I was gonna leave my first comment in the Pantera video when you talked about hip-hop artists with live bands, recommending a Roots reaction but dug into a bit more and found this video. Before even starting it, I'd like to also recommend an Atmosphere review. Not only am I a big fan of Slug's clever, metaphorical lyrics and Ant's layered, ill beats - they also did one or two records with a full band backing them. On one of those, there's a song titled "Freefallin" that samples and pays homage to the same Tom Petty song you recently reacted. Not Atmosphere's PRIME material, but a good song nonetheless and perhaps a good one to do a react or review on... But assuming you might be familiar with their catalogue, it'd be cool to see you guys pick your song of choice. Keep doing what your doing. Peace! -JP

Undun and How I got Over are always on my playlist whenever I go to audition Speakers. The recording is crisp and they touch so many genres, melodies and rhythms. Did not know that Hip-Hop could be so moody like this.

Awesomeness! I (a 55-year-old) stumbled upon your channel recently watching your reactions to Yes’ Roundabout, Rush and Boston. And now you’re pulling up The Roots, from my old home town of Philly. I always had respect for the early years of rap/hip hop such as Run DMC, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, Eminem, (the G-rated) DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince (more Philly boys), and The Roots. But, just like these lyrics stated more than two decades ago, what happened to authenticity, originality, instrumentation in the genre? Most of what’s been put out since 2000 is ABC crap (Already Been Chewed), just cobbled together and spit out of a computer. Half the blame goes to the labels/record companies, but the other half the blame also needs to go to these so-called “artists”. What rap/hip hop artists of TODAY actually play instruments, play them well, write intricate lyrics rather than just reading from a rhyming dictionary they pulled off their bookshelf, or just spouting the same gangsta b.s.? I’m willing to pull out of my own comfort zone just like you guys do by delving into and loving 70s/80s prog rock, hard rock and metal. Keep it up, Ryan & George! Free Thinkers, Unite! 😎🎸🎼🎵🎶

I'm from the metal/punk/rock community. Thanks for this. I'm a young Irish American man living in the rural south. I've been looking to branch out more into black music of all kinds for years, something that would show me a piece of the essence of real black communities and families and ideas, something that wasn't some phony corporate jackass with gold in his mouth rapping about how much fun it is to live a shitty, short, drug filled, sex crazed, empty little life on violent streets ("Hey, but there's a lot of money!" the corny little corporate dipshit hee-haws in indignation. "I may not have good friends or love and I'll be wack and broke in a decade, but at least I have money!") Instead I wanted something beautiful and true and creative. The kind of cultural exchange going on on this channel is pretty cool and its potential is exciting. You guys are genuine and you garner respect being as honest as you are, and if you keep remaining true to yourselves, I think you can help a growing cross pollination of different musical strains resulting in a new bloom of strange and exciting music across all 50 states, a musical bridge between cultures that minimizes all of the petty bullshit that American's like to fight with each other about. I'd found a lot of talented, real, lion hearted rappers and cool funk bands and soulful blues groups before you guys, but I'm sure you guys will show me way more. I respect you bastards. Peace.
