I used to go and sit in the pub garden with my Dad in the 70’s. I have a memory of a pony being in the garden on one occasion. I also watched my cousin in a boxing tournament in the pub, he boxed for Rosehill.

I wonder if anyone took any photos while in the gardens of the Rose pub? I haven't come across any.

I lived in this pub as a youngster in 1977. My father must have taken over after the manager mentioned. It was an absolute nightmare, there were shootings, continuous fights and disruption. I remember the Napoleon’s club and the railings around the dance floor and the Village bar. I think there was another bar called the “Brown Derby”. I can remember roaming over the roof and I’m sure it had a beer garden. The pub was massive and we had live in staff, we weren’t there particularly long but it was memorable for all the wrong reasons.

Thanks for the Memories. I lived at 81 Rosehill court across the road 1975 to 1980. Spent many a night in the Rose pub. It became a very troubled place near the end Lots of punch ups etc. Oliver Reed used to frequent it many a time. Saw him running up and down the bar with his pants down a couple of times. I think it was his party trick? Saying that.. It's not well known that he used to volunteer as a Hospital Porter at the St Helier on occasional Saturdays and would end up in the Rose pub for a rather long Session. Also I was told by an uncle that St Helier Avenue was the first dual carriageway in the UK. He used to drive a bus from Sutton garage after the War.

Definitely a pub to avoid from my experience. Fights were a regular event I seem to recall. I used to go to the St Helier’s Arms once a week in the early 70’s but that eventually went the same way as The Rose. It was all an ‘interesting’ area. The one time World Hot Rod champion lived close by. It wasn’t unusual to suddenly find him tearing down the road in his race car while he tried it out before the next meeting. Different times.
