'TO THE QUEEN'. Excellent video! My dear in-laws are British and from time immemorial, everyone in the house was made to stop and gather as a family around the TV for the Queen's Christmas Broadcast. My father-in-law, an honored RAF navigator in WWII, would always rise from the dinner table with goblet in hand to honor the present company and the occasion with nice words, and finish by raising his glass and saying, 'TO THE QUEEN'. We'd then also all stand and raise our glasses and say the same. AND WE MEANT IT. His respect for the wartime Royal Family was palpable. Beautiful memories. Thank you.

Ah yes, we lost lots of people to death and emigration during the Famine. The population of the island has actually still not reached pre-famine levels again. I totally agree that the British response at the time was wholly inadequate and cost lots of additional lives because they (the government of the time) just didn't care enough about the Irish, but personally I don't blame the current royals for it and I think Queen Victoria was appalled by what was happening to her Irish subjects. I live in Germany, and most christmasses (pre-internet) there was no possibility to watch or hear the speeches. But some I have seen lately online. The Bundespräsident gives one each year, too, but they are rather glamourless and beige. Though I would never even think about living in a monarchy, the pomp and circumstances are surely alluring. And I like this polka-dot dress a lot. She was such a beautiful woman, and had an infectious smile.
@HistoryCalling7 күн бұрын
This is a little off topic, but when KZbin tells me where my viewers are living, Germany is often in the number 5 position, which I find fascinating because of course English is not the first language there (it is in the top 4 countries people tune in from). I've often wondered why so many people in Germany listen to me? Do you get taught excellent English in school, so it's easy enough to understand me, or is there a big ex-pat population of native English speakers living there? I'm very happy to have you all here of course.

@@HistoryCalling I think it´s the long time we learn English at school. Today the children start English in primary school. I´ve started in 5th grade (because I´m old...). A bit off-topic, but something from (my fellow language stickler) King Charles that I'd love to rediscover: around 1989 he gave a talk about the deterioration of our speech into canned phrases, ending with his own translation of Hamlet's soliloquy into modern slang, dripping with satire and scorn, and loaded with phrases like "so I'm all like..." and "so I'm like, you know, all bummed and stuff". It was a comic masterpiece- I've wanted to buy the guy a beer ever since- and I carried a clipping of it in my wallet until it disintegrated. To hear that in his own voice would be a real treat, but I'd settle for the text! Anyone else recall this?

Yes, I miss her too. I would imagine Prince Harry must be quite homesick by now. I'm not sure he really thought through what he was doing when he ruined his relationships with his family. Still, whatever our problems with him, let's not be mean about his hair colour. I could be a ginger after all, for all you know :-0

Hi, very interesting video. I enjoyed it. I remember the movie The Kings Speech back in 2011. Have you seen the movie? It was a really good movie. How are you doing? I'm doing well, and so is my cat Benjamin. Have a great day. See you next video 😊

I've always wondered if watching the Queen's Christmas speech is a popular Christmas activity in the U.K. and around the Commonwealth, or if it is regarded as somewhat anachronistic in recent times. Especially now when public communication is instant and access is always available, do people look forward to the broadcast, or do they just catch the highlights on the news later? I've always admired the Queen's commitment to carrying on the tradition, especially in the years when it must have been most difficult, such as the years that featured scandals within her family, or those years when she experienced loss. I wonder if the BBC keeps track of the ratings they garner from the speech and compare them from year to year throughout the decades? It would be interesting to know, for instance if Charles III's Christmas speech is received with as much interest as his mother's was, or even if her later speeches were as popular as earlier ones? Thank you for another great and informative video!
@HistoryCalling7 күн бұрын
They do keep track of ratings and I believe it does well, but I'd need to go investigate actual numbers. I would imagine viewer numbers went up as Elizabeth's reign progressed, simply because more people had TVs, then phones, tablets etc.

Being American, I've never heard these. I'm not sure when I learned that this was done. But can you imagine how hard it is to come up with something inclusive & for "everyone" without offending "someone" and yet be strong enough & promote your beliefs & hopes and not coming off sounding insincere or pretentious? Sure need good speech writers, but it is obvious the Queen had a hand it what she wanted to get across. No thank you. I'll leave it to the Kings & Queens. I think it is a nice tradition.
@HistoryCalling7 күн бұрын
It seems a shame to me that something similar can't be done for Americans by the President. Maybe some day one of them will start a new tradition for the States.

Love the video but the picture of George V I think of from 1935 not 1937.. George V died in January of 1936

May I please ask why you characterised this as a Windsor tradition? Did you mean within English monarchy? I ask because I know the monarch in Spain gives a similar speech (which is usually turned into a series of memes) and I always imagined other parliamentary monarchies did something similar.

The Christmas speech only started with the Windsors and I'm only talking about the British monarchy, yes.

One small problem. King George V died in January 1936, so that picture can’t be 1937.

So, there’s been some new info on the “Princes in the Tower” case regarding James Tyrell, that his sister in law (or smth like that, ngl I don’t remember💀) having something that belonged to Edward V. What do you think of that? Do you regard it as the “smoking gun” it is being made out to be or think it can be explained by other things and should be treated w caution?

I haven't looked into it yet, but I saw an ad for it on TV yesterday. I'll reserve judgement for now. Channel 5 aren't traditionally known for their quality history programmes.

There's a lot one would want to know before accepting that this conclusively indicts Sir JamesI: the authenticity of the will, the nature of the chain, etc. Would anyone be so foolish or forgetful as to stipulate that a chain belonging to Edward V was being bequeathed, if it were not something that had been acquired legitimately? How might Sir William Capell, Lord Mayor of London, have acquired such a thing? A lot of questions, most of which will probably either have no answers or answers that lend themselves to more than one interpretation. (I'd like to see if Sir William mentions the chain, whatever it is, in his will, before it turns up in Lady Capell's will.)
