Not the Christmas speech, but I remember my whole family by unspoken agreement dropping what we were doing to watch the one the Queen made about the pandemic. She was such a powerful presence. My country has about as much history with the British as anyone has, btw. Not commonwealth or a former colony or anything.

We live in Canada, and every year my Mom made everything come to a stop on Christmas day to watch the Queen's message. She admired the Queen from the time they were both little girls. My parents celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary the same year as the Queen and Prince Phillip, and actually attended the celebration garden party at the palace. I think it was the most exciting day of Mom's life, she treasured that memory the rest of her life.

'TO THE QUEEN'. Excellent video! My dear in-laws are British and from time immemorial, everyone in the house was made to stop and gather as a family around the TV for the Queen's Christmas Broadcast. My father-in-law, an honored RAF navigator in WWII, would always rise from the dinner table with goblet in hand to honor the present company and the occasion with nice words, and finish by raising his glass and saying, 'TO THE QUEEN'. We'd then also all stand and raise our glasses and say the same. AND WE MEANT IT. His respect for the wartime Royal Family was palpable. Beautiful memories. Thank you.

Love the fact that you have done this book...my family came over during the Potato famine and never stopped talking about it. We live in the US...my family hated the British family because they blamed them for the potato famine and it makes me sick how much the US drools all over the current monarchy...the US spent all these lives to get rid of them. I feel like the Irish especially understand this.
@HistoryCalling
@HistoryCalling 7 күн бұрын
Ah yes, we lost lots of people to death and emigration during the Famine. The population of the island has actually still not reached pre-famine levels again. I totally agree that the British response at the time was wholly inadequate and cost lots of additional lives because they (the government of the time) just didn't care enough about the Irish, but personally I don't blame the current royals for it and I think Queen Victoria was appalled by what was happening to her Irish subjects. I hope the book is able to help you reconnect to your Irish roots some more :-)

And that candles were sold out pretty fast...

I live in Germany, and most christmasses (pre-internet) there was no possibility to watch or hear the speeches. But some I have seen lately online. The Bundespräsident gives one each year, too, but they are rather glamourless and beige. Though I would never even think about living in a monarchy, the pomp and circumstances are surely alluring. And I like this polka-dot dress a lot. She was such a beautiful woman, and had an infectious smile.
@HistoryCalling
@HistoryCalling 7 күн бұрын
This is a little off topic, but when KZbin tells me where my viewers are living, Germany is often in the number 5 position, which I find fascinating because of course English is not the first language there (it is in the top 4 countries people tune in from). I've often wondered why so many people in Germany listen to me? Do you get taught excellent English in school, so it's easy enough to understand me, or is there a big ex-pat population of native English speakers living there? I'm very happy to have you all here of course.

@@HistoryCalling I think it´s the long time we learn English at school. Today the children start English in primary school. I´ve started in 5th grade (because I´m old...). I´ve alays liked foreign languages, and at some point I tried reading my favourite authors in English and French, and succeeded. And KZbin helped a lot... The hardest part, though, are all these different accents, especially from northern England, Scotland and Wales, as well as some parts of the United States. But I thoroughly dislike the new youtube option to let some robotic voices "translate" the videos into other languages. I love the clear pronounciation in your videos, and have never had any difficulties understanding your content.

A bit off-topic, but something from (my fellow language stickler) King Charles that I'd love to rediscover: around 1989 he gave a talk about the deterioration of our speech into canned phrases, ending with his own translation of Hamlet's soliloquy into modern slang, dripping with satire and scorn, and loaded with phrases like "so I'm all like..." and "so I'm like, you know, all bummed and stuff". It was a comic masterpiece- I've wanted to buy the guy a beer ever since- and I carried a clipping of it in my wallet until it disintegrated. To hear that in his own voice would be a real treat, but I'd settle for the text! Anyone else recall this?

Well done as always. The DAW I use has a Abbey Road King’s Microphones Rare, royal, and unlike any other microphone sound. LONDON (Reuters) - Vintage microphones used by the British royal family to deliver speeches to the nation feature in the Oscar-nominated film "The King's Speech," the story about how King George VI overcame his stammer. Three priceless microphones with gilt, silver and chrome details, bearing the royal coats of arms and other insignia, were dug up from the vaults of British music company EMI and used to record music for the film at Abbey Road Studios.😇

I think this is a tradition in several countries. I know here around the Bundespräsident (literally federal president) makes the christmas speech, and the chancellor makes the one on new year's eve. I have on occasion listened to one or the other, though not often.

@@HistoryCalling Well, here around the president does not comment on politics (edit:of the day, he's more commenting on societal issues), so his messages are usually somewhat generic, as far I have seen. Though, as said above, I seldom had the time over christmas to actually listen carefully, if at all. The chancellor's speech on new year's eve usually is a bit more direct, though even there as appropiate to the occasion. After listening to your summary of the monarch's speeches in the UK, and given that I actually have a lot more time to myself nowadays, I will make it a point to listen to both speeches this year and maybe even the UK christmas adress and see how they compare.

I've always wondered if watching the Queen's Christmas speech is a popular Christmas activity in the U.K. and around the Commonwealth, or if it is regarded as somewhat anachronistic in recent times. Especially now when public communication is instant and access is always available, do people look forward to the broadcast, or do they just catch the highlights on the news later? I've always admired the Queen's commitment to carrying on the tradition, especially in the years when it must have been most difficult, such as the years that featured scandals within her family, or those years when she experienced loss. I wonder if the BBC keeps track of the ratings they garner from the speech and compare them from year to year throughout the decades? It would be interesting to know, for instance if Charles III's Christmas speech is received with as much interest as his mother's was, or even if her later speeches were as popular as earlier ones? Thank you for another great and informative video!
@HistoryCalling
@HistoryCalling 7 күн бұрын
They do keep track of ratings and I believe it does well, but I'd need to go investigate actual numbers. I would imagine viewer numbers went up as Elizabeth's reign progressed, simply because more people had TVs, then phones, tablets etc.

Being American, I've never heard these. I'm not sure when I learned that this was done. But can you imagine how hard it is to come up with something inclusive & for "everyone" without offending "someone" and yet be strong enough & promote your beliefs & hopes and not coming off sounding insincere or pretentious? Sure need good speech writers, but it is obvious the Queen had a hand it what she wanted to get across. No thank you. I'll leave it to the Kings & Queens. I think it is a nice tradition.

There's a lot one would want to know before accepting that this conclusively indicts Sir JamesI: the authenticity of the will, the nature of the chain, etc. Would anyone be so foolish or forgetful as to stipulate that a chain belonging to Edward V was being bequeathed, if it were not something that had been acquired legitimately? How might Sir William Capell, Lord Mayor of London, have acquired such a thing? A lot of questions, most of which will probably either have no answers or answers that lend themselves to more than one interpretation. (I'd like to see if Sir William mentions the chain, whatever it is, in his will, before it turns up in Lady Capell's will.)
