My great grandfather, who is still alive and is 103 year old told me a story of how one day the british came into his town. They went through every house and got all the books and burned them. They broke down the school and arrested the teachers. And they left warning them that they aren't here to be educated, but to be slaves to the empire. He grew up illiterate and has never fully learned how to read and write. This was in India and it was the norm.

It's also untrue. Slavery was outlawed in 1837 (not 1833), and the owners were compensated by the British government who passed the emancipation law. All crown debt is paid by the taxpayers, so saying that "the slaves themselves paid the debt" is cherry-picking the facts, and ignoring that they had a lot of help from the other 98% of taxpayers.
