My great grandfather, who is still alive and is 103 year old told me a story of how one day the british came into his town. They went through every house and got all the books and burned them. They broke down the school and arrested the teachers. And they left warning them that they aren't here to be educated, but to be slaves to the empire. He grew up illiterate and has never fully learned how to read and write. This was in India and it was the norm.

Not a fan of royalty, however I would challenge every country to look into its deep past and I'd be surprised if there is no slavery, be it from same cultures, cast systems, feudal systems or treatment of captured peoples.
