The Royal Love Story of King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola of Belgium

Looking back over the past 100 years, the gradual liberalization of women's abortion rights worldwide has been a long process from the second half of the 20th century to the 21st century. In the last century, abortion being illegal was still very common. For example, in the Catholic country of Belgium, it wasn't until 1990 that the women's abortion law was passed, allowing women to voluntarily terminate their pregnancy within 12 weeks. To ensure the smooth passage of this bill, the then King of Belgium, Baudouin, arranged for the parliament to strip him of his powers as head of state for one day, so that the parliament could pass the bill directly, bypassing the king. The reason Baudouin himself was unwilling to personally sign this bill, aside from the influence of the Catholic Church, was a personal sorrowful experience that cast a lasting shadow over his and his beloved wife Fabiola's life. Yet, it was precisely this past that made their lifelong companionship so precious. So today, let's talk about the story of Baudouin and Fabiola.

The historical facts about the abdication of his father Leopold III are not correct in this video. During the mai days of 1940 he surrendered to the German army to spare lives -and he was therefore the most popular king in Belgium. More so because he didn't flee to England but stayd with the people. Next the Belgian government of that time who was in London was utterly dispised by the Belgian people. When they came back in 1944 they forbade the kind to reign again. The Belgian peopled voted for king Leopold to stay king !!! So it is not true that the Belgians did not want Leopold III. Bauduin even did not want to be king because he wanted his father to stay!

I had always read the former story, not the one you're stating, but your story is the one that makes sense to me. I have read that they were prisoners of the Nazis. In fact, the Nazis wanted to kill them all and gave them poison disguised as candy for the children. Thanks to his second wife's suspicions of the Nazi's intentions, she didn't give them to the children and so they lived. I was quite surprised to read that the King was viewed as a traitor! King Leopold tried to be a good king and he was maligned unfairly. I don't know why the story hasn't been corrected yet.

@@BlueSaphire70 The bit about the poisoning etc is not true. The king was since mai 1940 a prisoner of war. He and his family were transported in july 1944 to Germany against their will. The king was viewed as a traitor only by the elite that was the exiled governemt in London -they were the real traitors, but then they came back in september 1944 when the allied were in Belgium and they took on the governement again because they were supported by the allied forces. Most of the history of the second world war is biased -the victors story is the one that is told always

@@jennymees5907 I think what happened was that Leopold III exceeded his authority when he surrendered Belgium to the Nazis. Belgium had been a constitutional monarchy for over 100 years at the time, so it probably was not his place to make that decision. I agree that his motives were pure because he wanted less suffering for his people, no doubt remembering the awful Flanders Fields of WWI. I also don't think he was a traitor at all. He was a prisoner of war! He and his family suffered all the indignities and hardships of an occupied territory along with the rest of his country, something which endeared him to his people. It was totally unfair what happened to him after the war, but he did mess up by surrendering. Other than a public apology by him for having exceeded the scope of his position, maybe abdication was the only solution open to him. However, I think it is wrong to perpetuate the image of King Leopold III as the "traitor king" because it is simply not true.

@@jennymees5907 King Leopold III participated in WWI and no doubt was horrified by the prospect of another carnage. I agree that he acted on the best of intentions, but you can't ignore the fact that a constitutional monarch is supposed to be Commander-in-Chief in name only, as a representative of the country, which is quite different to the role of absolute monarch. I am not an expert on constitutional monarchies nor of the Belgian Constitution, but I think that being the Commander-in-Chief in name only lacks the authority to surrender without the government's say so. That being said, I still think King Leopold III was unfairly treated by the government, calling him a traitor without any justification whatsoever.
