🚨CORRECTION: Manawanui is the 3rd largest ship in the RNZN. I misread her tonnage and that is my error. This story is about what we know so far in the sinking of HMNZS Manawanui. Since the focus of the comments seems to be on the ship's captain, here is her background. Commander Yvonne Gray joined the Royal Navy in 1993 and sailed in frigates and minehunters. She transferred to the Royal New Zealand Navy in 2012 and Manawanui is her first command.🚨 Also, no comments on my excellent Maori?

I don't want to let you all know something. Certain nations are going to collapse yourself for the new world order. There's going to be 10 nations left of the new world order after the destruction of World War 3 and major catastrophic man-made weather weapons. That's a rove, but they worship Lucifer. As God they are Freemason, religion research it look up, William Cooper or mystery of Babylon on KZbin. William Cooper, check it out. Watch the hour time episodes. At least 10 of them put your trust in Jesus. Things are going to get rough. So anyway, they're going to crash out certain navy's on purpose. The ships were designed for an old air of kinetic war to defend independent nations like I said, over a 170 nations are going to join one of the 10 major nations and that is, at the last time we're gonna be just like big cities, I'm just telling you what the truth is? I'm just telling you what the truth is and there's a satan as if we've got a short time. He knows his time is short and God has got him one of a week. You know, as well as I do that. The days are going quick. God has shortened a time on earth. To give satan even less time and those that are righteous under Jesus. Are quick or time to get through this.Tell people that you know about jesus

I worked in engineering maintenance for this ship for many years, but I've been out of the industry for years now, my recent knowledge is second hand loose lips and I can't say too much but I'd still estimate it's the 2nd best maintained ship in the fleet after the new HMNZ Aotearoa and maybe the most used midsized ship in the fleet, surveying (it has a moon pool for divers and submersibles) and most training exercises as it is the most multirole mid sized ship in the fleet (Canterbury and Aotearoa are bigger, Taupo and Hawea are smaller). I heard it's sonar, radar and info sys were recently upgraded and the primary method of surveying, it could launch unmanned submersibles via it's moonpool and it didn't have much capacity to carry many smaller craft or launch for surveying. It's not an old ship and had the most regular maintenance and had nearly constant upgrades being installed and planned, it definitely wasn't a quality or maintenance issue in regards to the state of the hull, I didn't work electrics, could've been a fault there but unlikely. They say they had a powercut which caused them to lose control and run aground but I wonder if the chain of events was the other way around, it's probably our most frequented country for training so a good element of complacency could've played a part, new sailors enjoying the scenery as they pulled into familiar waters. Samoa is probably our closest protectorate by relationship, we invaded them in 1914 holding control until 1962 taking control for the British Empire from the Germans, uncles old tales say it was just one old German in a hut by the beach drinking coconut schnapps. There are more Samoans in Auckland than there are Samoans in Samoa, half the island is part of America, their industry is coconut and fish based with a healthy heaping of tourism and farming. Wire tapping speculation is preposterous. At 14:42 The area the smoke is coming from is most likely an engine fire with smoke rising up from below, with that level of roll the engine could be oil starved and catch fire, with the standard 20mm hull it could easily rupture after running aground with spilt fuel and exposed electrics inside the hull. Probably the only reason to be glad New Zealand is nuclear free! I've heard speculation from crew that because of it's frequent role in training it has some of the more experienced officers training the fresher crewmates in the navy, so response time and immediate individual decision making could be lacking compared to a more experienced crew? The same hearsay suggested that the original captain, Lt commander Andy Mahoney who supposedly turned down promotions to continue sailing as captain, was eventually pushed out and replaced by Commander Yvonne Gray the from the British Royal Navy (rumoured DEI hiring that all branches underwent thanks to the Jacinda Ardern's Labour/Green govt). I can't speak for Commander Gray, I never met her personally, but her bio states she was studying to be a teacher and only joined the navy to earn some money so she could eventually open her own restaurant but decided the navy suited her better and gained 19 years experience in the branch, apparently her having a wife is relevant? Regardless the previous captain Lt Commander Mahoney was an outstanding gentleman everyday I met him with a wealth of experience, overqualified for the role but still extremely down to earth, always interested to learn and improve operations, quintessential leader. Background from NZ Navy; coming from a lineage of British Royal Navy men, ex commercial diver, 22 years sailing in the navy with an impeccable record. I can't help but imagine it might've been a much more boring headline with him in charge... As you say it's a massive hit for our navy and budget, we're a very small but highly specialized country, we put all our eggs in one basket and do a lot with little, we try to make it the most advanced basket of eggs we can. When it comes to the military, everyone is an over trained specialist in their field and we can't afford any casualties.

Without knowing what happened, you can't exactly blame the captain? What about the officer of the watch? What about the rest of the "skilled" crew on board? Until we get more details, why bad mouth the captain? I don't want to defend them if they did wrong. But nobody has that information yet. For starters, we don't actually know what the vessel was tasked with at the time. It could have been a sanctioned high risk operation. Or she was simply incompetent and unable to manage the vessel and crew. But again, we don't know.

Listen to Sal. It is not uncommon for ships to catch fire and sink after they are abandoned. The question is should she have not given the order to abandon ship after it became obvious they were not getting the ship off the reef. Tides are predictable. I can imagine the sea level going down, and the ship tilting more and more, until it slipped off the reef. Question is, how many people dies in that instance, in a useless attempt to save $125m.

I like your points made. I'm writing a report here in NZ. On the Breakfast show interview I heard NZ Defence Minister Judith Collins suggest a power outage may have caused the ship to run aground. A Power Outage? Doesn't sound like a natural thing to cause a ship to sink so quickly to me! Were the crucial Power Management Systems-PMS and Dynamic Positioning-DP2 operations met? What were the contingency plans in place? There will be a Court of Inquiry led by NZ Defence Force into the incident. I'm a member of Taxpayers' Union lobby group & agree there will be conjecture on the cause of the sinking so there must be transparency. Samoa & its Pacific Island neighbours and all other small island developing states are particularly vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change. It's well documented sea level rise and the changing climatic conditions threatens the regions land, livelihoods, ecosystems (marine greatly) and their culture. With increased known changes a check of the ships compass was required. Geomagnetic energies may have changed magnetic north!.

That is an excellent analysis. However, a lot are focusing on the "how did it happen?". When the real story is, why is it that the Captain gave the order to abandon ship after only one hour? Especially considering that the vessel remained afloat for another 14hrs, and there is a photo from 0500 the next day showing the ship still had power. IF it was so badly damaged it could not be saved by the crews DC efforts in only one hour then why did it stay afloat for another 14hrs, safety of life at sea is critical, but in this case they evacuated the ship 1952 and rescue boats did not arrive until 0100. In that time a life raft and a ships RHIB were washed on to the reef. More questions than the grounding causation.

You can't help but feel sorry for the Kiwis. Their government really under-invested in defence, in a style similar to Canada, whilst Australia has been on a spending spree. It was causing a bit of annoyance with the Aussies as there's a military alliance between the two countries and it was felt that NZ was letting Aus do all the heavy lifting. Really sad for them to lose a ship.

Speaking as a Kiwi currently living in the US, my fellow Kiwis have been getting the governments they deserve for a while now. Many lefty midwits in my lovely little land, were all basking in the sunshine they were convinced was shining out of each others ahh-souls and proceeded to squander all the social wealth accrued by previous and prescient stewards of the nation, on virtue signaling displays they were convinced would increase the rectal lumens being emitted from their aforementioned politically aligned ahh-souls. All the Kiwis that fuggin knew better, are all the Kiwis that will be tasked with straightening schidtt up, just to regain some semblance of the nation they are the deserving heirs to and stewards of, although they still won’t register the fact that without clearing the decks of these chaos causing, dark hearted lefty midwits, this will be played out again and again, like an incompetence playlist, set on shuffle.

I worked on RAINIER and FAIRWEATHER. both vessels 50 years old and slated to be replaced (i believe those are under construction). The survey launches are 29' aluminum prop driven with Cummins diesels. Full suite of electronics and even a head. Very capable boats. They go out a full 8 to 10 hour day because 50 gallons of diesel lasts when surveying. One of my YT videos is on RAINIER as we depart San Francisco.

I hereby venture the speculation that people are WAY too used to blindly relying on electronic navigation. Failure to do basic visual navigation in restricted waters is probably going to be part of the problem. Former QMOW/navigator watchstander.... USCG.... back in he 1970s. Served on a 210', we calibrated the Loran C system with visual nav... such as three arm protractors and horizontal sextant angles. Super accurate. Watching people stare at screens and do zero visual double-checking is mind-boggling level of trust in a single system when near to shore. Or so it seem to me.

I work on the ocean for a living. From the details I see in the video. The current and wind should have seemed kept the ship traveling along shore but not on to the rocks. The swell probably did the pushing, especially once the ship was in shallower waters. The swell looks like it is coming from a southerly direction in the video which would nudge the vessel on the reef. Not sure why they couldn't get the anchor(s) out, I could see the engineering crew getting overwhelmed with trying diagnose and get the engine(s) restarted knowing they might only have minutes to work (if they had a power failure). This is a not so large vessel and many of the crew and officers may have had crossover duties. The engineers may have normally helped with the anchors. Anchoring is basic to surviving on a vessel. I don't know what happened there. I feel many modern mariners don't practice anchoring unless it is part of their routine job. A proper budget matters and maintenance is king. A mariner is a mariner, the ocean does not treat men and women differently. We will find out the answers from the official inquiries in time.

So a vessel that constitutes half the tonnage of the entire New Zealand navy is operating near reefs, some of them uncharted, and yet it runs aground. That is hard to explain. -In the days of wooden sailing ships, someone would be at the bow of the ship throwing a line to measure the depth. Today they have depth gauges that work even better. And given the risky circumstances, why wasn't a small boat going ahead of this ship and radioing back the depth? There seems to be an incredible lack of foresight here.

@@olpaint71 True to a point. But she just lost a Capital Ship of an ocean going navy, specifically equipped for and currently actively tasked with mapping those reefs. In what would appear to be calm clear weather conditions and a fairly minor sea state. Grounding the ship badly enough to not simply entrap the ship, but resulting in an all hands evacuation, uncontrollable fires, listing leading to the ships rollover and complete loss. The only comparable incident I can think of is the 2018 loss of the Norwegian Navy frigate HNoMS Helge Ingstad in a collision with an oil tanker. If you ever find the final reports on that one the incident is horrifying in its root cause. Which was elevating diversity over actual merit or fitness for duty. In that case the entire bridge crew was an “all female, first of its kind” sort of deal. As the Norwegian Navy strove for gender parity in a job category that does not see a lot of female applicants. So any such applicants were taken and promoted to meet quotas, regardless of ability. Until they got them all on the same bridge… and a decision needed to be made. Here is the situation they faced. They were on an obvious collision course with the tanker. No question if they stayed on their plotted course they would collide. And the tanker could not avoid them. Their only option for turning in time would take them into an area of water that the rules said they should not go. Because depending on tides there was a risk of grounding. So their choices were “absolute 100% certainty of collision with another heavier vessel!” Or “possibility of grounding the ship”. Want to guess which one they went with? Because grounding the ship would look bad on their records. They apparently argued about this until they hit the tanker. Resulting in the sinking of 20% of the Norwegian Navy. Yeah, we need to wait on the final reports on this one. But it’s pretty clear at a glance that there were some staggering levels of gross incompetence of leadership with this one. Because these aren’t 18th Century sailing vessels. And any modern military (that is not Russian) should be capable of sufficient damage control to avoid the loss of the ship. Short of hitting an undiscovered WW2 Sea Mine, there really isn’t any possibility here that doesn’t scream total incompetence.

Some notes on this: 1) most military vessels don't have their AIS turned on but due to it's dual purpose may run it especially when doing things like this, 2) OSVs of US manufacture usually have limited watertight partitioning and no or limited double hull so a a puncture below the waterline can quickly get out of hand, 3) I'm not familiar with Samoa but I have worked very close to shore in other Pacific Island groups and the charts may be of poor quality. I can think of places I've worked who were last seriously charted in the 30s and the only real changes have been updating the art to modern styles and adding a WGS grid (which may or may not be accurate), 4) Along with 3 there is also the tendency when using ECDIS to be over reliant on the system (its modern and therefore good) but the charts are still the same 80 yr old garbage in a shiny new suit. There is also the problem of the ECDIS assisted grounding (real term that. Tells you something huh?) where poorly set warnings and color scheme ESPECIALLY in the night and dusk palettes. Also ECDIS throws so many false alarms (for reason I don't have time or patience for here) that it's entirely possible that there were warnings that went unheeded. If I were an investigator the first thing I'd be looking at are the navigational procedures and regulations WRT to the use and operation of the ECDIS system.
