The former emperor is really a cool person. He is not only the first person to break the tradition and married a commoner. In fact, he didn't want to be an emperor but a scholar and he's renowned of his research on a particular kind of fish. He's even the first person in the royal family to ever studied abroad (Oxford university I believe). Now he's finally not an emperor anymore and he's happily doing his research with his beloved wife.

Wasn't his father the first to break tradition, he stuck by his wife when everyone at court, his advisors, the military, everyone was pressuring him to get concubines. He didn't want it. He wanted to just have one wife and they all didn't like her and dissuaded him from marrying her even. They were so powerful, they could've gotten rid of him as emperor if they chose. He was also against the atrocities committed during ww2 and didn't want to go to war, his generals proceeded without his consent and went against him. He was hostage to them yet he stuck by his choice of wife, and only 1 wife.

I rememeber when Princess Masako married with Emperor, my mother said, "She is standing alone so it would be so much better to not marry place like that" but she was so great so that she was just so perfect for Imperial Family. @Amy It is unfortunately, eventhough I personally love Japan for how developed and advanced the country is. Gender inequality still very much persists in the Japanese society. Japanese men tend to see themselves as ‘superior’ as they’re providing income for the family; while women are still being traditionally asked to ‘stay at home, and be a good housewife’. The wage gap between male and female is about 38% in 2015 and 25% in the year of 2017. So yeah, things are slowly improving. :)

I always see them on tv when they attend charity functions and events and they’re the most cutest old people. Hirohito wasn't responsible for the war. That was planned by the war Lords, he did however give his endorsement in the beginning but sat around in the Palace for the rest of the war muddling over it. He's responsible for the Japanese surrender though.

Actually, General Douglas MacArthur realized that Hirohito was much more valuable to him alive because he knew that if he was put on trial for war crimes he would have been found guilty and executed - so not only would a then 12 year old Akihito have been put into a position not meant for a child, the people of Japan would have gone off the rails. Allowing Hirohito to keep his title as Emperor was crucial for the Americans to have control during their occupation of Japan.

I think the thing is a princess marrying a commoner takes on the commoner's name. If she bore a son as heir then that's basically installing a new family on the throne. This Asia, people are very particular about passing down their name. Even in my SEA country which is "less Asian" than others, fathers without sons would lament not doing their part in keeping the name alive.

Something will likely have to be changed regarding the rules of succession in Japan - the current order after Naruhito is his younger brother Crown Prince Akishino, second in line is Prince Hisahito and then third is the former Emperor's younger brother. Japan has had 8 women hold the title of Empress in their own right and something will have to be changed simply due to the lack of men eligible to ascend to the throne.

Since Japan has an Emperor, its ruling family is known as "The Imperial Family" or "The Imperial House of Japan". Hence, weddings in the family are "Imperial weddings", not "royal weddings".

The only ones with royal blood are the royal family, everyone else is a commoner. Women cannot retain their titles as they are marrying into their husband's commoner family but men can keep theirs as their wives are the ones marrying into the royal family.

And one of the teachings of the ancient Shinto religion, "Purify yourself (kiyome) by getting rid of Defilement (kegare)," has been taken over today as a basic manner to "Not pollute even in public places," to “Always keep the environment and yourself clean”, and to make everyone, regardless of status, gender, or age. feel comfortable equally. Nobility has been abolished after WW2, everyone outside of the royal family are commoners, hence why female members of the family lose their title after marriage as they become part of their husband's family, a commoner family. While male heirs are allowed to retain their titles despite also marrying commoners because the wife is entering their family.
