I'm sure people just like calling something underrated for the hell of it. How the hell is it underrated? There are four seasons spanning over eight years. It was hugely successful and very popular. Tens of millions of people tuned in for the Christmas specials. It won four BAFTA Awards, four British Comedy Awards, two NTA Awards..to name but a few. What the hell are you talking about?

The Christmas Special when Nana dies is one of the best things ever to have been on TV. It had everything a good drama should have: comedy, pathos, gut wrenching sadness and irony. Sinead O'Connor's haunting rendition of 'Scarlet Ribbons' sealed the deal. RIP Denise, Nana and Twiggy.

RIP Caroline. Heard some very good things about how she treated the crew behind the scenes, she would often (apparently) buy lottery tickets and sweets and stuff for everyone involved. Absolute class.

That's right. Everyone got a lottery ticket every week and on a Friday at the end of filming there would be a table with drinks for all the cast and crew, whatever their preferred tipple might be.

This was one of thoes once in a generation shows. Captured the working class brits so well. Such amazing characters wraped in the smallest setting. It felt like you were spending time with family not watching a show. The Royle Family will always have a special place in my heart

this has to be one of the very best comedies ever - Unbelievably witty and subtle humour, as well as the completely obviously funny stuff. It was also capable of making very sad and very powerful moments. 10/10 for me

Does anyone know why Season 1-3 was so genius and the rest were so bad? Was it a fall out between Aherne and Cash? Something must have happened. I enjoyed Aherne's Dossa and Joe much more than the later Royle Familys.

The earlier series felt literally like a fly on the wall watching a real family. The later specials seemed like they made caricatures of their own characters, the acting become over the top, rather than natural. It may have been something other than the acting or writing, such as the director, that made it feel so different.

@@alfraedo304 I reckon it might have been all of those things (how was Caroline at the time?). As a fan i enjoyed seeing them more, but with each bad scene, i couldn't help but feel let down. It should have been a classic (or THE classic) not a cult classic

It's so nice to see them laughing and joking. The show was the same, full of fun. Imagine pitching a show where the whole show is based in one house. It was an amazing cast and script that made it what it was.

I have the complete Royle Family DVD box set and these outtakes are part of the set :) when I'm feeling down I watch the outtakes to cheer myself up . Hard to believe it's 23 yrs old...yet still relevant today :)

The out takes are even funnier than the final scenes. I thought gormless Dave just had to be exactly the same in real life, but here he is laughing his pants down trying to deliver his lines. Brilliant stuff.

I just discovered the show. Unbelievably entertaining. The wonderful cast made me care about these people. I am now mourning the loss if Caroline Aherne and Liz Smith. Unfortunately, I don't think most Americans would get it. I need more of these people.

SO wish they would make more episodes,some say it wouldn't be the same without Caroline,but I say what a great tribute that would be to her. This from a super fan across the pond👍❤️

DoctorVision Many Australians love a good Brit comedy, soap, drama etc. Heck, we have several channels on subscription tv in Australia (UKTV, BBC First and so on) that are completely dedicated to Brit programmes. But then again, it's totally understandable, considering the heritage of some Aussies.

Never been a better or funnier show on tv than this. The casting and script was nothing short of genius. And it hit home to all the working class people out there as it was like looking at ourselves in the mirror !!!! You know, people were talking about the first episodes of the show, so I had a look-in and just didn't get it. Some family sitting around watching telly? Then I began to snigger and laugh out loud - such subtlety, such slyness, such cleverness. Got the box set. I cherish the series now.
