I met Rudy Sarzo when he played with Dio in Copenhagen in 2008. I asked him, "You've played with all the greats; Randy Rhoads, Tony MacAlpine, Carlos Cavazo, Viv Campbell, Adrian Vandenberg, Craig Goldy, Doug Aldrich, Yngwie Malmsteen. Who was your favorite guitarist to perform with?" He answered immediately, "Randy Rhoads. Definitely Randy Rhoads. With Randy, it was all about the music. The music was first. Everything else; the fame, the money, the women... that all came after. Randy was a musician's musician." I pressed, "What was it like playing for Yngwie Malmsteen?" He shook his head and laughed, "We don't talk about Yngwie Malmsteen."

I worked with a producer who had worked with G N R, Metallica, Korn, Jeff Beck and the list goes on. Lot's of big egos and intense people, but the only person he truly didn't like at all was Yngwie. Said he was a complete prick 24 7.

Rudy bought my parents house in 88 or so when we moved from Ca back to Indiana. When Whitesnake came thru Indianapolis he called me and asked if I'd like tickets and backstage passes. He knew I was interested in music and wanted to be supportive of that. He was so nice and generous and genuine that it was truly amazing. So I got to go for free and have amazing seats and then be among the first people to be allowed backstage afterwards, to meet the band. Thank you, Rudy! I'll always remember your generosity!!!! I love your vids Rick! Thank you for putting the work in and making such high-quality stuff. Do a vid on chamber-jazz?

I have met Rudy. He's a great player, onstage presence, he's excellent. When I did meet him, it was when the Metal health lineup did their reunion tour. They all signed my Randy Rhoads book. When I talked to Rudy, I just said- I'm glad you're back in the band. He just gave me the big Rudy grin, and that was good enough. Rudy is a great player, and I have read his book quite a few times. He's a great, strong player.

Wow! Rudy is cool as heck. He is 2-3 yrs older than me but we got to America the same way, by way of Cuba 🇨🇺... I was put up for adoption by Cuban mom and Irish dad, they also were escaping the Cuban Government. I was born late October in 1964. It shows up in my guitar playing, especially fingerpicking. It goes all Latin sometimes by accident! The Irish shows up in my fiddle playing. I know this is several years too late but thank you for making this video Mr. Rick!

I met Rudy's brother, Robert, on September 1,1987 at the Paradise Theatre in Boston, MA, when his band Hurricane was opening for Gary Moore. He, and the other band members, were some of the nicest people I've ever had the pleasure to meet. We spoke about Rudy, Carlos Cavazo, his brother Tony played bass in Hurricane. Robert showed me some cool classical guitar stuff and we discussed gear, family and funny stuff that happens on the road. It was an incredible night, I got to meet Gary Moore and his band as well. Such awesome memories.

I saw Rudy with Ozzy in 1980 at the Orpheum in Boston with Randy. I was the oldest guy in there at the time at 29. I felt so out of place, but I grew up on Sabbath and was loyal to Ozzy in some weird way and had to see how he was surviving after Sabbath. Rudy had a great sound and I loved how he struck a lot of his notes on the upbeat instead of the downbeat. Ozzy was sloshed on stage and still drinking. They almost had to carry him off the stage at the end. I couldn't hear for a couple days after that concert. Randy did a 20m guitar solo that was screeching loud. I think I lost a few cilia in my inner ear that night, but fuck it, it was all worth it. That was the last time I ever saw Ozzy again. Thank you Rick for having Rudy on, really enjoyed how Rudy still has a passion for learning. That is key to keeping your mind sharp when you get our age. Chhers, Rick. Love ya.

Great conversation. I've heard of Rudy from decades ago. You really didn't hear a lot about bassists. Like he said, it was all about a big name guitar player. Hi Rick, I think you should start a new video series based upon what you did about Chris Cornell and Soundgarden (sad circumstance aside, naturally). I mean a series when you get to discuss in depth a certain band or artist, analyzing the music, the composition, and maybe throw in some anedocte here and there. It would be awesome. It's a pleasure to hear your analysis and get to know an artist through the lenses of a guy like you.

I'm not a big fan of the type of music Rudy plays but I really like his playing. Now, I know why there is this kind of distinction after listening to this interview. He's got a lot of musical intellectual curiosity, and it's now not surprising that when I hear him play he sounds like someone that doesn't need to be anchored to hard rock or metal or whatever genre he is known for. He's a super intelligent guy.

I had occasion to open for Operation: Mindcrime, Geoff Tate's solo band when Rudy was banging with them. He came out of the bus as we were hanging around outside after soundcheck and hung out with us for a bit. He was absolutely nowhere near the "internationally famous rock star". He never made us feel that he thought he was better than us. In an industry of too many "rock stars" and too few musicians, Rudy was a refreshing change.
