So cool! I didn’t know about the distinct sections of the city. How long was the city occupied, do we know?

Occupation startd around 800 CE and lasted until 1400 CE, so about 600 years! It's a really impressive site. Would love to visit one day.

For me, descendant of Ethiopian and Persian Jews that I am, the best thing about the Great Zimbabwe is the belief that it was built by Jews who were escaping the Middle East after the Muslim Arab conquests. The idea is that as no one else from the continent had every worked in stone, that skill would have to have been brought in by some other group of people. Some of the Lemba people claim that skill.

I guess you’ve never heard of Egyptians, or the contemporary rival of the Zimbabwean architecture of Thulumela, Tellem in Mali, Loropeni, Burkina Faso which is older than the Zimbabwean architecture, as well as the even older megalithic structures of the Stone Circles of Senegambia, in the Gambia and Senegal regions, The twin cities of Gao, Mali, Kilwa Kisiwani, Tanzania, Gebel Berkal, Sudan, Douroula, in Burkina Faso among many other older or equally old structures of stone that dot the continent.
