A lot of people are asking me quite a few common questions: 1) "Why are you doing another form of bowling when you said you weren't going to?"- It's a mixture of boredom, the need to make content, and watching recently the episode of the Simpsons where Homer moves to Boston and starts bowling Candlepin. 2) "Are you going to do the rest of them?" - I'll consider it, but I make no guarantees. 3) "Can you do x sport" - Again, I'll consider it, but I make no guarantees.

I grew up with this bowling here in Atlantic Canada. I love the sound of an alley when it's packed, there's nothing like it! You're right about the weight too, it's a lot more about strategy than force/speed. The benefit is that kids can play and so can older adults. It's still a competitive game for healthy adults too, but it's great that everyone can enjoy the sport! EDIT: One thing I'd like to expand on that you mentioned at 3:54 about format. Typically the scoring of professional matches are done in triples, so you will see scores in the 400s commonly. This can be confusion if you're thinking "but wait, 300 is a perfect game and no one's done it yet!". Because of the large fluctuation between strings triples are just better for competition. Even legends like Craig Holbrook only broke 500 in a triple rather recently (2006 according to the ICBA).

Ahh yes, my favorite game :) It's fun taking my out-of-state friends (I live in Maine) to do candlepin bowling, and wow does it throw them off! I love the strategy involved in playing the wood to pick up some crazy splits, especially since with such a small ball (2.7 lbs. instead of 12-16 lbs. like in 10 pin) you can get some wicked velocity and/or spin. I'm pretty good; I have a 108 average, and the best string I've ever had is a 152. Barring some miracle, no one's pulling out a perfect game. In all of my time doing leagues and tournaments, the highest I've ever seen in person is a 183. I like how there's essentially no skill cap in candlepin the way there is in 10 pin (where you can see Grandma pull a 300). Even a "clean game" (every box is a 10, spare, or strike) is fairly rare in candlepin. I even had a televised team match when I was a kid =D And why that split is called a Half Worcester: "According to legend, the term was coined when a team from Worcester and a team from Boston were competing in the semifinal round of a statewide tournament held sometime in the 1940s; late in the last match of the round, needing a mark, one of the bowlers on the Worcester team "punched out" only two such pins with his first ball, prompting a member of the Boston team to taunt him by saying, "You're halfway back to Worcester!""

I live in Indiana so we don’t have candlepin alleys but I did purchase a set of 10 synthetic candle pens and then was given a set of 10 vintage wooden candle pins as a gift. The wooden pins are so old they actually do not have protective cappings on each end and of the wood pins play a lot differently than the synthetic plastic. The only experience I have is playing it in my garage but as far as that that way the pins are made in what they are made of can greatly affect pin action which is why I am so intrigued in this version.

Great vid. I love this stuff. I'm a frequent candlepin bowler. I wish this covered a bit more on fouls as the ball will pop out of the gutter and knock some pins down a lot of the time in many of the places I bowl. This makes it a bit confusing sometimes like when you're on a spare or strike. There are a few ways to throw the ball accoring to the orinial rules. Would be fun to cover those too and show differences between the Ten-Pin and Candlepin throwing types. A little enlish is used in candlepin towards the end of the throw. It's pretty cool stuff.

There is one more foul rule in candlepin bowling that wasn't mentioned in the video. The lob line - (0:19) - a horizontal line on the lane, about 10 feet beyond and parallel to the foul line, before the arrows. During each throw or bowl, the ball must make contact with the lane before it crosses the lob line for the shot to count. If the ball makes first contact beyond the lob line, it is a foul and zero is scored for that throw or bowl. The lob line makes candlepin bowling more challenging since you can't "loft" the ball as far as you want, unlike tenpin bowling.

@@NinhLyUK you also are wrong about the replacement of pins being knocked down as a result of a foul. You can only replace a full rack of pins. Therefore, you get a fresh set of 10 pins after a foul on the first ball (since you always start a box with 10 pins), but after a foul on the second ball ONLY if you scored a 0 or an F on the first ball. Otherwise, the pins felled as a result of a foul are lost and the maximum count for the box drops from 10 to 10 minus the number of pins knocked down. Also, a foul also includes a ball hitting any portion of a pin not on the playing surface. If the ball makes first contact with a pin that is entirely in the gutter or the portion of the pin hanging over the gutter, that is a foul.
@legozelda2090
@legozelda2090 4 жыл бұрын
but it is also a foul if you touch or cross the foul line while holding a ball, even if you do not release the ball (which differs from big pin bowling). So if a bowler takes a practice approach with a ball in hand to check how their shoe is sliding, s/he has to be careful to avoid the foul line.

This is great, other than missing the spread eagle within terminology. You seemed to give a “yeah, sure” response to someone else who commented on it, but a spread eagle is when you only hit the 1-5-8-9, leaving the 2-4-7 and 3-6-10. It sounds like a made-up joke term, but it’s definitely one of the candlepin-specific leaves and phrases.

I really would love to try candlepin bowling except there are absolutely no houses in Southern California that offer it.. it looks like it's really much more difficult then ten pin bowling.. I like the fact that the Deadwood is left where it's at which can make converting a spare either easier or difficult
@peteg475
@peteg475 4 жыл бұрын
A couple things I didn't see mentioned: Tenpins have ten "frames" which make up a "match". The candlepin equivalent is ten "boxes" which make up one "string." Also, traditionally, candlepin scoring is recorded in a vertical column (with shading certain corners of the box to indicate spares or strikes), while tenpin scoring is recorded in a horizontal row.
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 4 жыл бұрын
Yes I was actually aware of those. I didn't want to completely alienate ten pin bowlers, so I tried to put it in more familiar layout. Even though I find the vertical box scoring easy, it wouldn't have looked great on the screen. Thanks Pete.

Very interesting, particularly as a Englishman living in the West Country of England, where skittles is played. The game in our league is 8 players to a team, two teams, five divisions. Each player has six hands of three balls. There are nine pins so theoretically the max is 27. This is so rare it is likely probably only once in a season - if that. When it does it makes the local newspapers! 6 x 27 is again the theoretical maximum but I can state that in history it has never been done and never will be. On a Friday night in our area, around 600 blokes go out skittling - it's that big. Let's hope we can get back to it after this C-19 nonsense is over.

A few additions: There is a “lob line” about 2-3 feet in front of the foul line. If you lob your ball over that line, not only will that get nasty looks (candlepin lane wood and equipment is in short supply these days), but it’s also a foul, and no knocked over pins count. If you punch out the head pin and king pin, knocking down no other pins, this is called a spread eagle. A game of 10 boxes is called a string. Scoring is usually either automated or semi-automated, though some places do have no frills experiences (usually attached to restaurants and bars). Resetting pins is also either manually controlled or automated, depending on your location. I’ve personally never heard the term “derby” used. When you knock down all 10 pins on your 3rd ball, it’s usually just called a 10-box and marked with an X. The traditional competition format used on TV in New England is two bowlers bowling three strings, with total pinfall deciding the winner.

I thought a spread eagle included knocking down the 8 and the 9 also.
@SoftBank47
@SoftBank47 7 ай бұрын
@@peteg475 I did some research, and you're right. A spread eagle counts as long as the head and king pins are the ones primarily punched out, leaving the "wings" (2-3-4-6-7-10) standing.

a few questions 0:38 the one in the middle: what's Duckpin Bowling? what do you mean by the maritime Canada? And I would have thought strikes would be easier because the pins being long and thin make them easier to fall.
@peteg475
@peteg475 Жыл бұрын
1. Duckpin is a version of bowling found between Rhode Island and Virginia. 2. Maritime Canada is Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. 3.Strikes are harder because of the small ball. The narrowness of the pins also makes it easier for the pins to miss each other when being scattered around.

There was just one rule missed for Candlepin, the "Lob Line Rule". Unlike Duck Pin, 10 Pin, and 5 Pin Bowling (played only in Canada), Candlepin Bowling also has a "Lob Line", requiring Bowlers to release the ball and touch the lane before crossing that line. Under Candlepin Bowling rules, if a Bowler releases the ball, and touches the lane after crossing the "Lob Line", the player will be called for "Lobbying" and any pins knocked down will not count. In addition, while Candlepin Bowling lanes are available in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, they are not available in Prince Edward Island or Newfoundland and Labrador where 5 Pin and 10 Pin Bowling are popular.

Growing up playing candlepin, I would say it is more of a skill game than tenpin. Also, I read years ago that the standard for a “perfect game” is looser- 10 marks in a string, or all marks if you will. Also, now you get to find out who your New England/Maritime viewers are.
