I think that sound value is more of a hiatus than a diphthong.

A lot of people use this rune for the sound in “near” due to the vowel shift over time. think of how words with “ea” changed in sound like in the word “ear” or “near”. But the original sound does seem quite close to the sound in “square” today… hmm

I've heard that Icelandic has this word "aur" which could be a cognate of "ear". Online dictionaries tell me that aur means "mud/mire".
