The Runner Ducks of Vergenoegd Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, South Africa

On the far side of the world, at a unique family winery, ducks are on patrol.
They’re on the lookout for tasty treats like snails and bugs - anything that could jeopardize a good wine harvest.
These Indian runner ducks, totaling over 1,200, help the Vergenoegd Wine Estate keep a lid on pests.
The ducks have been working this land since 1984 and have helped the estate earn the World Wildlife Fund’s biodiversity certification.
They have a parade everyday, so “duck” into the winery the next time you’re in South Africa.

What happened to their wings?

Indian Runner Ducks have naturally small wings and do not fly. They are originally from Indonesia, where stone carvings suggest they've been around for more than 2,000 years. They are great at pest control, but they also lay a lot of eggs! :)
