The runway layout is vast. I had to get a British Airways flight from Amsterdam many times. We had to taxi to a runway far from the terminal. We went over motorways, rivers and I wondered when we were going to take off. When we got to Gatwick, I felt like thanking the pilot for the trip round Amsterdam.

We used Gatwick once, because I've only been to the UK three times I think, once by ferry. We arrived at night and the entire place looked closed! Nearly all the lights were off and the part where we stumbled into, was completely deserted. No staff, no other travellers. Of course there were people there and also other passengers but as a child I only remember the darkness. It was as if we arrived at Gatwick after closing time. And we had a bit of trouble finding an exit that wasn't closed.

@@AudieHolland Due to the pandemic, many flights, those still happening, had been diverted from Gatwick to Heathrow. As things are opening up, Gatwick should be open again. I tend to use Heathrow a lot now.

Yes, that is the “Polderbaan”, which is far beyond the rest of the other runways. Sometimes a fifteen minute taxi

Wonderful airport, easily overviewable, logically designed and in relation to its size and above all other comparable airports pretty short walkways.

That Polderbaan runway is the main reason why I always skipped Schiphol as my transit or my destination if it isn't for emergency or urgent matters.Always entered Amsterdam through The Hague or neighbouring Brussels

@@adamshaheedh LOL that's true! If your plane lands at the Polderbaan and you have loved ones waiting at the gate, for a rather long time they will have no idea from where you are or how you are. "The plane landed. That's all I can say." Expect 30-45 minutes before actually arriving at the gate.

@@AudieHolland it's true, when pilots calculate fuel when arriving or sometimes departing from schiphol they account 45 minutes of taxi instead of usual 20

I think there is "maybe" a way of using 3 runways for landing and 2 for takeoffs. You use rwy 18R, 18C and 27 for landings and you use rwy 18L and rwy 24 for takeoff. The only unsued runway in this configuration is rwy 22-04. This configuration would help the airport to have less delays

Yes; 18R Polderbaan, 18C Zwanenburgbaan, 18L Aalsmeerbaan, 22 Oostbaan, 24 Kaagbaan and 27 Buitenveldertbaan. And then of course the same names for the opposite ends.

Most airports only have two or three runways. If you have six, you have to use a system to easily distinguish/recognize them.

Khizr Might want to educate yourself before posting something ignorant like this. Many countries use a period as the US uses a coma. That runway is 2010 or 2,010 or 2:010 meters long depending on how one uses punctuation.
