Rivalling the speed of the Messerschmitt Me 262, the Bereznyak-Isayev BI-1 was an experimental step into the world of rocket powered fighters. Although the idea ultimately didn't catch on, and by the end of the war the turbojets had essentially won out the race, the brief window of rocket powered aircraft demonstrated unbelievable speed, unusual designs, and a generous smattering of unmistakeable mid century innovation.

Polikarpov, Mikoyan and Lavochkin produced a number of prototypesin attempts of twin propulsion aircraft with piston engine and either ram jet or rocket engines.

Fascinating, thanks. I'm a bit of an aviation buff, so when something shows up that I've DEFINITELY never heard of before, I'm right on it with gratitude. Of course, the Soviets were ahead with rocket technology in the 1930's, but, as you show, the great purge set them back quite a bit.

An interesting video thanks. I might have missed it but I don’t think the source of the nitric acid that caused problems is mentioned. The rocket engine ran on kerosine and red fuming nitric acid. I don’t know how “Red fuming nitric acid” differs from ordinary nitric acid, but it sounds absolutely terrifying to be in an aircraft.

Excellent video - learned a lot. One thing, I'd argue that nitric is pronounced n-eye-tric, as in nitrogen.

Just a thought, you can use custom hangars in war thunder. Or set the holiday dates to a different region if you don't want to use the The Halloween/Christmas hangar, it threw me off so much when watching this, lmao.

At 11:10 when you show the internals, thats the Halloween hangar from war thunder. I'm just pointing out you can mod the game to change hangars and stuff, that's all. I think war thunder is an amazing resource for content creator's making videos on rare obscure vehicle's that don't have many surviving pictures or video.

Oh yeah, that's right, I just took that screenshot - the other footage from the hangar isn't Halloween however. @@Error-5478

At 3:50 you say a rocket intercepter would be several orders of magnitude faster than bombers. Think about that. An order of magnitude is 10 times. So several OofM would be at least 30 times. Bombers flew 300 mph. You really believe the intercepter could fly 9000 mph! Not even the X-15 could approach that.
