In the 90:s the swedish commander in chief of the military was asked by a very left/communist leaning journalist why all the military exercises featured an invasion from the east, and never the west (implying a us lead invasion). The CiC looked at him for a while, then nodded and said "I guess they could invade from the west, but it would be a rather long and odd route for the Russians to take".

@@FifingFossilyou might be thinking about the battle of Narva in which Sweden crushed the Russians, but likewise, every Borodino has a Waterloo, the battle of Poltava in the middle of the Swedish invasion of Russia, when the king hurried south to find better winter quarters resulted in almost complete annihilation of the previously nearly undefeated Swedish army and the Swedish king barely escaping with his life to modern day Moldavia then in the Ottoman empire. After awhile he was let back into Sweden, only to get sniped in the siege of fredrikshald fortress in Norway, and afterwards the death march of the Charoleans on their way home ensured that Sweden wouldn't rise to such a level again.

This whole thing reminds me of the time Swedish fighters escorted a SR-71 across the Baltic who was coming back from a mission, just to rub it in the Soviet’s face and make sure they don’t try anything.
@AdurianJ
@AdurianJ 8 ай бұрын
As a Swede that incident in recent media has been changed to be a nice NATO friendly story as Sweden moves closer to NATO membership. If you read about it in older books the Swedish fighters only escorted it as a precaution because the plane was in distress and risk of ejection and so it didn't violate Swedish territory. If the Soviets had tried anything The Swedish fighters would not have intervened. A few years earlier Swedish Draken fighters had intercepted air force one with President Ford on board and forced it to change course after the Swedish foreign office hadn't notified the Air Force it had allowed Air Force One to overfly Swedish territory.
@tobiaslinden8769

The best part was that the first Viggen pair that escorted the SR-71, was on a training flight and therefore completely unarmed. So they basically placed themselves in front of a bunch Soviet MiGs and went "Come on Ivan, we dare you." The Americans even gave them medals after the event was declassified.

I mean, they don't "need" the US' help... But it would certainly be welcome ☺️. The US' military has such a threatening presence to anyone trying to cross it that all their enemies turn into those videos of dogs barking behind fences until the door opens. Having the US on your side basically ensures no war will have to be fought because everyone knows they will lose if they do cross you. And no war is always better than any defensive war. The US has a military doctrine of being able to fight two military Superpowers at the same time. And this is during peacetime! As we've seen during this war, Ukraine and Russia have both ramped up their military capabilities incredibly. A modern USA in war economy mode is something no country wants to fight. It would make D-Day look like a small scale excersise.

Well speaking as one of those folks, we can manage on our own (it is after all, Russia, the lonely toons villain of countries) but having the end game boss of defence budgets at our backs helps because they know they would not only have to beat us, but they would have to speed run it before the sun dropping cowboys arrived. Plus being on the same side means we get to join in on the freedom memes, and that's always fun.

After discovering the vessel in the early morning after a fishing trip he promptly drove his little boat to a friend of his, Ingvar Svensson, who then repeatedly called the naval base. They did not believe him at first, thinking that he was drunk, but after a while they relented and sent the mentioned officer to investigate. Thank you two for covering this topic! They also periodically dropped grenades into the water from bridges to stop divers from going past. @@Anonymous-zu7dh Though to be fair. During the 19th century, there was a big shift towards more of a brotherhood with Denmark than a rivalry. Which left Russia as the only major antagonist. Though there was also a point where Sweden and Russia could have got alone well. With small chance of even getting back the lost Finnish territory though potential royal marriage. But that is just a lot of what ifs in the end. The improved relationship with Denmark after all happened.

I'm Swedish and this incident the U137 incident as it is known in Sweden is one of the thing I have tried to read everything about it because it's Interesting. This video has some confusion when it comes to the timeline and mixing up events. It also don't fully cover the how incompetent the Russians where. So let's cover that. When commander Andresson the first Swede to board the submarine and ask WTF ! asked to see their claimed position the special "Navigation Expert" they had on board brought up a chart that looked very much like a Swedish Naval chart in quality and resolution. The Navigation Expert got some swear words thrown at him and returned with a generic chart of the southern Baltic. The S363 had managed to ground in the middle of a Swedish minefield with one line of mines behind it and in range to blow the sub up and one row in front of it. The Mines where Swedish K10 controllable mines laid in peacetime and controlled from a bunker ashore. In essence the moment a Swedish soldier manned that bunker the sub could not escape and any assisted breakout would take place on top of hundreds of pounds of rigged Explosives. All decent Harbours in Sweden had fixed minefields in front of them in Peacetime during the cold war but places like Karlskrona Naval base had more of them, it was these fields that the coastal Jaegers where protecting in case of war. their light anti ship missiles might not sink a large warship but they can sink a minesweeper easily. The confusion is about the incident the first evening the Sub had been discovered where an Arte 719 fire control radar at a Swedish 15cm coastal battery bluffed the Russians by switching to wartime frequency hopping as they approached the border intending to cross and an incident one week later when in a full storm two West German grain carriers steamed through the soviet armada at anchor and approached Karlskrona which looked like a breakout attempt. This is when the Swedish prime minister verify to the Supreme commander to "Hold The Border", note "Hold The Border" was the previously agreed posture the supreme commander only called his political master to give him the option of backing down. In the first incident the 15cm coastal battery was undergoing modernisation which sadly meant its old fire control equipment had been removed, and this had been photographed by a West German useful idiot in the peace movement which made the Soviets aware of this. So when the submarine was discovered the battery needed fire control equipment (it could still fire on fixed targets like the sub) an Arte 719 which is a 1970's fire control radar with frequency hopping and laser rangefinder was requisitioned and taken out to the battery along with all the necessary parts to connect it to the battery. However they arrived only about an hour before the Soviet fleet would cross the border so the battery commander ordered them to start transmitting right away giving him updates on their position. When they approached the border despite protests that the radar was not centred or connected to the battery they locked on the largest radar echo using track while scan, assuming the ship had equipment that told the Russians they where targeted. When the squadron didn't stop and with just minutes from the border he ordered the radar into war mode which meant frequency hopping. This was banned in peacetime because the frequencies should not be revealed to the enemy unless in time of war. The battery commander concluded that preventing a war was more important than the frequencies and gave a written order to switch to war mode. After transmitting in War mode the squadron stopped just short of the border save for an ocean tugboat that crossed and was immediately met by a Norrköping Class Swedish torpedo boat and turned away. The Flotilla commander on the flagship stopped and asked Moscow for instructions as he was convinced Sweden would start shooting if he crossed the border. By the time Moscow got back Swedish strength had grown enough to make a forced breakout impossible. Later that night HMS Neptun who had been partaking in the Torpedo tests was now in the middle of the Soviet Flotilla revealing her presence with a green underwater spotlight system she had been fitted with for the torpedo tests. Allowing her to sail past all the soviets ships at anchor like some green underwater sea monster. In the second incident when the radar eccoes of the two freighters crossed the border on the Radar the whole Swedish military went to a war footing with Viggen Strikefighters scrambling from bases in Central Sweden armed with RB04E anti ship missiles. This was the worlds first sea skimming anti ship missile that entered Swedish service in 1961 and a major Reason Sweden deemed larger ships like Destroyers and cruisers unsurvivable in the Baltic sea. The missile was top secret and stored in secret bunkers few officers even knew the location of. It had been the latest E version was a major upgrade for use on the Viggen with the C and D versions being used on the previous A32A Lansen. The RB04 was so advanced Sweden banned it's export as it was 15 years ahead of it's time. This missile did everything the Excoset did over 20 years before the Exocet was used in the Falklands war. It's so advanced it entered service the year before the British Surface to air missile systems Sea Cat and Sea Dart which was completley incapable of shooting down low flying targets in the Falklands let alone Exocet missiles. The Archipelago was also full of Swedish coastal Jaegers and paratroopers quickly retrained to use Type 200 assault boats (the predecessor to the CB90). And squadrons of torpedo boats and patrol boats the later armed with Norwegian Penguin anti ship missiles. So what was the Submarine doing there. The theory is that it had been spying on ASW torpedo tests outside Karlskrona Archipelago by laying on the bottom as the new Torpedo 42 was being tested by Hkp4 ASW helicopters (Sikorsky Sea Knight) and the Submarine HMS Neptun (Näcken class). The Torpedo tests had been delayed so the submarine had run it's batteries down and needed to recharge, so as not to be detected by Swedish radar they proceeded into the archipelago on a secondary missions to scout the Swedish navy's military navigation routes. It was one of those route's markings that they followed on the grounding but because one mark was overgrown it was easily confused with a white stone the sub navigated on the stone and ran aground. This overgrown marking had been reported by a Swedish officer sailing his sailboat 2 weeks earlier, and if you navigate on the white stone you end up on the rocks exactly where the U363 ended up. If anyone has any questions I'll try and answer them.

Satellite comms jamming the radar warning system makes more sense giving little warning for the first hit. Conveyor being huge and lacking countermeasures for the second hit. Glamorgan could not shoot it down with it's weapons and got too little warning to chaff as they where close to shore.

Saying that Finland was an Axis member is not the same as saying that Finland was fascist or national-socialist. Finland WAS an Axis member, Axis being the military alliance. Finland willingly joined in the war in 1941, allowed for German troops in Finland and its army fought on the same side as those Germans. What would have Germany done if Fins said no? Germany invades Finland?! Hardly. Finland joined in the military alliance because they wanted their land back. As I said, that does not mean that Finland was a fascist nation or anything - but it is a FACT that Finland was an Axis member country. When Finland signed a peace in 1947, it explicitly described Finland as having been "an ally of Hitlerite Germany" during the continuation war. You may not like it, you may take offense, but that's just a historical fact. Finland WAS an Axis member - Allied nations thought of her as such, Finland explicitly admitted to it in the peace treaty. It does not mean that Finland was fascist (actually, it is known to be the only democracy to join Axis), or that it would kill people in concentration camps, or invade Sweden or anything. But yeah, Finland was an Axis member.

One story I remember - with the "Sweden got silent" thing as the fleet approached - is a story of when some coastal batteries were ordered to switch to "jump-radar". (Basically, fire control radars switch to a mode that constantly switches frequency chaotically to make them harder to jam.) This is something that was simply not done in training, because it could leak information to Red sigint. It was "in case of war only". So the Russians might have seen that and gone "OHSHI... they're really gonna..." ...but actually, allegedly, they didn't actually have ammunition. They couldn't fire. They just had to give enough of an appearance of being ready to do so, no way for the soviets to know. There's another story of a flight of attack jets being tasked to go for some ships that appeared to have detatched from the soviet fleet and go into swedish waters. They were later found to be some German (I forget if West or East) fishing boats that had decided to basically sail straight past a soviet battle fleet on their way to Sweden, not knowing this caused them to have attack jets vectored on them... :P (For Swedish speakers, I think some of this comes from the P3 Dokumentar episode on the matter.)

There was one I remember where the fishing boat manned by a 15 year old and his grandfather was being dragged backwards IIRC at close to 10 knots and it was eventually swamped by the water flowing over the stern. Again if I remember correctly the 15 year old grandson died as a result of their net snagging a ruzzian/Soviet submarine and dragged backwards. His grandson dying/drowning affect the old man who would go hunting ruzzian submarines with his shotgun. ¨Then up spake Brave Horatius, the captain at the gate. Death cometh for all men upon this Earth sooner than late. And how can one man die better when facing fearsome odds? For the ashes of his fathers and the temples of his gods.¨

I did a year in the navy aboard HMS Visborg a year or so after this incident. When we went on a short visit to Copenhagen there was the obligatory shore leave in our finest gear. That also served as an identifier so when we entered this bar the troubadour on stage immediately started playing "We all live in a Soviet submarine" (yes he used the music from the Beatles)... All in all, good times... :) Also, new Swedish sub (-marine?) :D

Yeah, Russia, (and to some extent, the rest of the world) kinda forgot that Sweden and Finland, being neutral, were prepared to fight the USSR/Russia, each on their own!

Funny detail: The subs commander tried talk strategy with Moscow over radio, and every time they started use code the swedes fired up the jamming... very pissed russians..

Justfor the record ..... Sweden inluding easter sweden (= finland today) had 32 wars with russia throughout history. Only twice on Swedish soil as of today . The rest was on russian or and some on todays finnish soil or som in the baltc sea. Despite Sweden/Finsland always was significant out numbered. Sweden won surprisingly often. And Finland, as only finland without sweden, had 2 more wars with russia

When you said "submarine on the rocks" close to Sweden I instantly thought, "Komsomolets?" Nope... apparently this isn't the only time Russia has ran a submarine into some Swedish Meatballs.

Last year i was on vacation in sweden and went to a swedish jet fighter museum. It was a confusing sight at first, because all we noticed was two disassembled c130s and a saab 105 sitting there. But when we walked further we realised the whole thing was set up inside an old underground hangar. The whole place had a lot of old viggens, and some drakens and a tunnan too. Really cool imo

Blue Jay's video about the Russian Baltic fleet is a classic comedic history of breathtaking naval incompetence. I laughed until I cried.

The order "hold the border" came 2 times. It was basically the first thing the prime minister (or was it minister of defence? Was a kid then, and it's 40-ish years ago) said when he got the first news about the sub. It had cooled down a tiny bit when Moscow came around to do something, wish is probably the only reason there was no war.

Mate, do you know the story of Liliana Gasinskaya? She was a beautiful young Russian spy, who defected to Australia by jumping out the porthole of a Soviet ship in Sydney Harbour wearing nothing but a red bikini. Images of this were on all the front pages across the nation. She later went onto be the first centrefold in the Australian version of Penthouse. Maybe you could do a video on all the Soviet & Russian spies who have defected?

Hold on, if they claimed they were grounded in Denmark wouldn’t that make it worse for them? They claimed they violated NATO waters; Article 5! Honestly the Sov. government was completely stupid.
