In a world where people are glued to their phones, the short wave became a place for the few and holds more power than ever. When cell service can go down from a software bug or a few well placed rockets, the world of HF can and will still convey vital information, all across the planet.

The "Troika" 3MHz crowd with their mix of homebrew/ancient unstable AM gear and SSB can sometimes be heard in the medium wave "pirates band" 1.6-1.8MHz, mixed in with Dutch and Serbian pirate broadcasts. Depends on conditions. Currently I hear some at 2015KHz in AM (abt. 200Hz drift), not sure if that's another watering hole or an one off. Always was fascinated with the "Siberian village radio" ever since I first stumbled into 3MHz.

I thought the signal on 6417kHz was that of XSL or the slot machine oddity. Said to be Japanese Naval Defence. It is often broadcast across multiple channels in the 6 and 8 Mhz bands and is very loud here in Australia after greyline. Given that it is audible every evening here with consistent strong signals, it is definitely not Russian. Whether the Russians are using this type of waveform/modem as well is unknown to me.

It contains also some other Soloviev's phrases and insults understandable by both russians and ukrainians. Also cuts from Putin's speach used. Interesting video! Thanks! For those interested in short wave listening, just wanted to throw in my two cents: I have a Malahit dsp2 + receiver... It has a nice looking display some interesting features and an attractive price, but the touch screen keypad doesn't work very well, and sensitivity of the receiver is very poor. Poor sensitivity can be particularly problematic when using an untuned magnetic loop antenna, though if you use an untuned loop with a preamp, like the affordable MLA-30, you can actually achieve acceptable results. Anyway, you get what you pay for! The best SDRs I've found to date would be the ones made by SDR-Play, though I'm sure there are many other very good ones on the market. Icom IC-7300 transceivers, by the way, have really excellent receivers! Good luck and happy listening to all short wave listeners out there!

A listening station in my pad in the basement. Log books. WRTH. Maps on bulletin boards with coloured pins for number of times heard. QSL cards. Sounds like a “when Hitler discovers that the office party is in Kiev” spoof. Both sides calling the other Nazis and sadly one side is right😢

Those who burn people alive are Nazis, if you defend them you are Nazi sympathizer as well. If you don't know the history of this region better stay out of it entirely and stop using Nazi chants thinking you are doing something good without even knowing the history of it.

Man, I love this stuff! I´d shure like to know what the data is. But the only radio I have is a Loewe Opta from the early 50´s. I love the air waves. In the 70´s I grew up next to Wolfsburg and the air was full of all kinds of stuff, it was fun listening to am and sw those days.

5:38 - That is not an AKKORD transmission. It's a recording of the japanese navy "slot machine" modem link. IIRC, Curt Rowlett had recorded a 1 to 1 exactly the same transmission years ago on a different frequency, those who are interested can look it up. AKKORD is completely different in it's structure of transmission.

Hi Lewis, first i want to Tell you that I really Like your channel - I have a question i would Like to ask you, i have a RTL SDR v3 Stick and no propoer antenna for it - do you have any recommendation what antenna i should buy so i can listen to the frequecies in your Video ? And is this Even possible with this cheap stick? I cant afford the 300$ reciever you linked.

Just stick 20 metres of wire up in the air as high as possible. For receiving on short wave frequencies almost anything will work reasonably well. Try and connect to a decent earth connection too. A copper rod hammered into a damp patch of ground will do. Use a cold water pipe if necessary but try to avoid central heating pipes as they will carry electrical noise from the pumps, thermostats, and timers. The RTL SDR will pick up all these signals with a bit of fine tuning of the settings. These will vary depending on your location and antenna system available but for best results try to keep the RF gain as low as you can while still receiving the signals you want. Use audio gain to get the volume to a point where you can listen comfortably. Use filters to limit the bandwidth to cover the signals that you want to hear, so around 3 to 5 kHz for audio signals. 2.4kHz bandwidth to limit interference, but audio might start to become harder to understand or follow if the signal is unstable or drifting, as it might with pirate broadcasts. Experience and practice picking signals out of the noise counts for a lot more than having fancy equipment and the RTL SDR is a very capable bit of kit in the right hands.
