During the First World War, there was an execution which caused shockwaves across Europe as it shocked many different nations. Edith Cavell was a nurse who was working in the Belgian city of Brussels. She was a very popular figure in nursing, and she worked to train other nurses to become better however during World War 1 she was also working against the Germans. She was working in German occupied territory, and was allowed to continue nursing, however she turned against the Germans and helped her British and allied soldiers.
Edith Cavell operated as part of an underground network who helped to smuggle over 200 injured soldiers and civilians out of Belgium and German occupation. They then travelled to the Netherlands before arriving back in Britain. Cavell did this for over a year until she was betrayed and then arrested. Because she was seen as working in German lands, she was accused and sentenced to death for treason, but her execution created great shock and anger across Britain and the United States.
Edith Cavell was ruthlessly and quickly shot by a firing squad, but the effects of her execution were profound. In the weeks after, British propaganda portrayed her as a martyr and an angelic figure killed brutally by the enemy. Because of this, thousands more soldiers signed up to fight in the First World War.

So few people know of Edith Cavell. A real female hero. My mother was in the Belgian Resistance in World War II. She was twice imprisoned by the Gestapo. One imprisonment my mother endured was in the same cell that Edith Cavell had been kept in, in St. Gilles Prison in Brussels. Mom died in 1983, after fighting cancer for 9 years. But all her life , she often mentioned how the thought of Edith Cavell gave her strength to endure troubles.

God bless and keep your mother it was unsung heroes like her that made such a great contribution to the defeat of the Nazis. These women showed bravery and courage that leaves me full of admiration. So many were captured brutally tortured and then executed yet none betrayed their comrades I doubt I could have had their courage and resilience. God bless them all,

She knew the risks she took if she was caught. She admitted to the charges and was duly sentenced to death. She accepted that with good grace. For the Germans, the thought of women working as spies, was dreadful and despicable. The French also executed German women nurses for the same reasons but no-one cared about that. It's a sad story all round. She is well remembered here in Belgium and the best private hospital in Brussels is named after her. The German nurses have been forgotten.

No one ever talks about what was done to Germans of all status after the First World War and Second World War. Strangely enough a English board of inquiry on the conduct of the war determined that her sentence was legally correct.

She should have known the risks. Spying is an extension of military activity. In those days, the standard sentence for spying during war was death. It may not be so in 21st century, but was universal then.

It's gross to see such evil people still have their supporters even in to the modern day. These people were Prussian militarists who's code was based on cold and callous death dealing. These people were evil and so were their children and their grandchildren and great grandchildren who to this day have turned their evilness inward and are trying to destroy everyone else in Europe from within.

@@stevenbreach2561 Why was her execution inexcusable? Take the nationalities out of the equation. You don't think that is an appropriate punishment for spies? Or just because she was a woman?

So many unsung heros and heroines died in tragic circumstances. It’s such a shame as nothing has been learnt from these poor souls giving their lives. We (human beings) still fight and squabble, don’t get on, argue, engage in battles and wars, maim and kill. It’s all us, yours, mine…….you come into this world with nothing, you go out with nothing, but what you do in between is what’s important. Why can’t we get on? Probably down to greed, laziness, envy etc. Edith done things that would terrify a lot of us, living under the threat of death every day. She was very, very brave, above and beyond, like all others who had to fight. However, I wonder what she and all those who died in wars would think about today’s world?

I firmly believe that since hardly any Germans were held accountable, it lead them to believe they could do it again with impunity. During the intial invasion of Belgium there were a couple of incidents where civilians were shot after having been taken for partisans. On one occasion, nervous German sentries fired at one another but it was blamed on civilians. Hostages were then taken and shot. Apart from that, the Germans behaved in a very civil fashion towards the Belgian public during the occupation. The British propaganda machine was responsible for a great number of outright lies, in order to portay the Germans as beasts. Even in WW2, this was the case for most of the population of occupied countries. I have had first hand accounts, including those of my family, that the average German soldier was correct in their behavior and often even friendly. This was in stark contrast to the Americans, who stole everything that wasn't nailed down and who acted like conquerers, rather than liberators.

@An Anna - Leo Tolstoy went through this crisis of conscience because he was of the landlord class - he turned against war and the military in an amazing obfuscation of logic - he was rightly opposed to crimes against the people who refused to fight - we would call these crimes violation of civil rights nowadays. On the other hand - taking to extreme, he couldn't justify fighting to save the lives of the innocent and weak - a perversion - what about those Nazis that thought disabled were useless eaters and had them gassed,? Non violence is a plain heresy.

9:00 So basically she wasn't just a nurse helping out and was in fact an agent (as confirmed by MI5 in 2015) so, really, the Germans had her bang to rights (pardon the expression) and she met a fate that she must've known was a possibility when she took the mission. That doesn't diminish her bravery, of course, but it does mean the WW1 Germans weren't just being needlessly and irredeemably evil and only did what we did to their spies, male and female, if we caught them. What really sucks is that story about the soldier who refused to shoot her and was himself shot for disobeying orders. That's a heroic example of someone paying the ultimate price for a brave and principled act ... and history doesn't even bother to record his name.

@@blatherskite3009Even during WW2 soldiers who couldn't shoot civilians during the war were just reassigned. There is Afaik no documented cases of Germans killing their own troops simply for refusing to carry out an execution. There was even a well known story of a nurse who was considered 'too nice' to concentration camp victims was sent elsewhere. She was seen passing out some of her food to the prisoners.

@Robert Stallard I agree that she "thought" she was doing the "Patriotic Right thing"....but that destroyed the German trust in allowing "civilians, medical personnel, and the civilized exchange of badly wounded(Officers)" to continue in their valuable courses. The Germans were already nervous after a couple of months of chasing Belgian civilian sharpshooters(in 1914)....that caused a few casualties(and some very very hard feelings), and some resulting grief amongst German units.
