I can't really place exactly why, but I really enjoyed the episode. I can see people complaining about AJ being overprotective but that doesn't seem OOC at all to me given the circumstance. Also, it was handled in a pretty funny way. The Chimera bits were great too.

Also I don't think people realize that this is a cartoon and AJ's antics were exaggerated.
@Rad_Crab11 жыл бұрын
MaybePotatoes I'd agree. Them being exaggerated as part of the joke was enjoyable. I mean, really? She put a helmet over the helmet she was already wearing. Clearly these were gags, and AJ being stubborn, overprotective of her family and sisterly are all within her character.

I saw your vid before this one, and understand and respect that you can smoke in this review series.... but the opening here shows a clip of you doing nothing but smoking, and then in the middle of this episode, you show yourself talking WHILE smoking indoors. ...do you want this to become your "trait" or "thing"?? Are we going to see "hey look everyone I smoke" at the opening of every episode now?
@lilmagi11 жыл бұрын
I think he is doing this on the purpose, to drive the point home. Something like, "Yea I smoke, deal with it!" sort of thing. One can even say "Yea I know it's killing me, but I choose to smoke anyway. Deal with it!" :P
@KawaiiChibiAngel11 жыл бұрын
He's been getting a lot of comments saying thing like "Do you know smoking is bad for you!" "You shouldn't smoke" "Kids watch your channel! Are you telling them to smoke" "Take the cig out of your OC" And he's repeatedly gotten these comments despite him telling those people to stop. He's even ranted and explained why he put that on his OC. So he'll probably keep doing things like this till everyone shuts up, calms down, and enjoy the content he puts out and not worry about something so small. He's a grown man and can do what he wants. =/
@andrewkful11 жыл бұрын
Or until those people who aren't comfortable with the way he's plugging it, unsubscribe. Let me be clear, I have no problem with him smoking in his reviews and I DO respect that he is a grown man and he can do what he wants. I SAW the rant he gave in the last pony vid. I have a problem when we see him on-screen DO-ING NO-THING ELSE. Even in his OC!

soulyman1thegame It's pretty easy to get electrocuted if you don't handle the equipment properly. And its very common for fires to start due to electrical circuits in the wall sparking. But this doesn't mean you should forgo everything with electricity because of that risk. Alcohol is another thing that many people are familiar with and some even will engage with on a daily basis. Drinking alcohol has a large plethora of risks, and people do die from it, but most drinkers are entirely fine outside of health risks from overconsumption. The point though is "Please drink responsibly". As long as you pay attention, there won't be any risks.

I think I'm starting to nail down what I dislike about Digis new style. I'm still watching because I love to discuss MLP and brainstorm ideas. But the random tangent at the end of each episode, this time going on about boots was really unnecesary. If he wanted to make a seperate video about it and went "Hey, this episode made me think about boots; Click on this annotation to hear me talk about it", then it would have been fine. But just going off course and talking about an almost completely different subject just seems so pointless to me.
@Foxpawed11 жыл бұрын
Its almost like he went "oh shit, I made this new style because I don't want to be known for just giving reviews of the episode, I want to do _ananlysis_ analysis. But there's this one thing I wanna talk about! Uh..."
@outtagoodnamesdangit11 жыл бұрын
Nice, funny analysis, Digi. Was interesting to hear your take on the idea of protectiveness vs responsibility. I for one, feel like I had a decent enough leash, but often was shocked at how much earlier the privileges I waited for were passed on to my younger sister. Now as an adult,I wonder if that's due to the fact that I tested the waters, or if it's because my sister was simply more eager/ready for freedom than I was. Probably a mix of both. As for the episode, it was a bit "meh" for me too, but the joke about not having time for a song had me rolling. That's a FiW type of joke right there. Anyway, ignore the haters who can't stop harping about the smoking and the yadda yadda, Digi. I like the new format and as long as the commentary's good, I'll be back.

The reason why, I think, many people haven't liked your new videos isn't because of the format, but because you come across as passive-aggressive in all of them (when you're not outright aggressive, like your rant about smoking that I already talked about). It's probably subconscious, but try to be aware of it.

How you bought up your diary made me cry. Being adopted and the money it brings, my Mom was very over-protective with me. Not sure if because of financial assurance or just being a Mom, but I couldn't socialize growing up. And I do resent my family because I felt like I was socially inept after leaving for college. I had to grow up quick in a social aspect, but it's still a struggle. I've improved on my own, but can't help but not feel close to my family as a result of my seclusion; and I doubt I ever will. Whether you read this or not, thank you for your words, Digi.

I personally resonated with this episode a lot when I watched it because when I watched it I had just begun my week long school trip to Japan and my sister came along to help me out because I was handicapped. We were forced to basically spend the entire week together because no-one believed I could do anything without her and my sister always yelled at me throughout the whole trip about how terrible my personality is and how I should be nicer to make friends. She helped me out a lot when I needed it but other times when I didn't need her help or just wanted to be away from her for a while she felt like she always had to stay next to me and guide me the entire time and tell me how to act. I know its just because she cares about me and I know a lot of the things I do are really stupid but that just seemed too close to me. It seems like she saw me as a baby much like Applejack did to Applebloom. She even said herself after we talked about how I might try smoking weed with her friend in the future that when that happens she has to accept the face that I'm not a little kid anymore.

OK Jim, serious comment... I found myself hating the episode on first play-through, not because of anything wrong with the episode, but because of the very reasons Digi mentioned at the start with his friend. I remember being 18 years old and being scared of telling my mum I bought a car (leading me to hide it for 6 months at my grandparents place). In other words, the characterization of AppleJack in this episode is like my mum. This fact alone terrified me to no end while watching all the scenes with AppleJack in it, even to make me feel...angry, scared, and even alone. Feelings I haven't felt since before I moved out of home. I'm glad that there was a resolution at the end of the episode, but I know that for some viewers, they will pine for what Apple Bloom was able to get. And, sadly, some parents will start disliking the show for hitting a nerve.

My experience with the main theme of this episode is likewise more anecdotal than personal. Also I'm not sure if parents watching with there children would generally be all that offended by AJ. They were all children once to, and I know that my mother (now in her fifties) still has to put up with her own overbearing mother. I also don't think there's much danger of an inadvertent take risks to prove yourself ready message. Yes that's what Apple Bloom does, but she nearly get's herself killed and needs AJ to rescue her. While the bigger lesson learned is about not being overprotective in the first place, I think the episode makes it clear that flagrant disobedience isn't the appropriate response either.

dude - as a smoker i don't really care if you smoke or not. i really think your oc looks pretty cool with that grungy badass "i don't give a shit" look and i like your new style - but man - to me it seems like there's frickin cigarettes everywhere in your vids - from that starting scene to the RAS-section - to me it appears as if you want to show people how badass you are but it kinda irritates me btw - i think the morale sucks pretty much balls - they pretty much says "do dangerous stuff or your parents don't recognize you" and the episode is much more aiming at the overprotective parents than the kids - which is actually teaching the parents a thing or two and kids probably won't connect to it all that much - at least in my opinion

1:50-2:02 I can think of some reasons why you won't dismiss the possible hidden-message as a bad thing. Because, if a kid does do something like that, it could help the kid learn something. But, it also might help the parents open their eyes and make a change to their parenting. Yet, at the same time the kid or parent(s) could face serious consequences and his/her parents might just be stubborn and decide to never let said kid do anything on their own again until they're eighteen. I think you already knew this, but I felt it would be interesting to elaborate. :)

Digi...Look, I understand that you're taking these videos in a new direction, and I have to respect that. You gotta do what feels right to you, but just from a viewers perspective, these new videos are not an enjoyable viewing experience. The style just shows a certain lack of care. If you don't want to do this anymore, than I totally understand, but part of what I come to watch you for is your insight, but also a certain amount of effort to both analyze and entertain. Also, the smoking is fine, but it seems to be more of a deliberate statement, almost a glamorization of smoking than it is a normal habit you just happen to be indulging in.
@556deltawolf11 жыл бұрын
Hey Digi, first of all, good review although I disagree with you on a few points. Also, your comments about overprotective parents interest me because I actually saw an interesting video from a child care expert who actually said one reason many over sheltered children grow up to end up doing things like drugs isn't because they resent their parents and rebel, its because they are psychologically conditioned to listen to a more dominating person. A kid who grows more independently can stand up for himself when a bully or a drug pusher comes there were and are more likely to make a much more rational decision.
@Trixiethegoldenwitch11 жыл бұрын
I've never heard that, it's pretty fascinating to think about though!
@MrPrimwhoozle11 жыл бұрын
That's behaviorism- an interesting psychological concept, but very flawed when applied to humans. For example: You can condition a dog to produce saliva when hearing a gong- no problem. It's even more easy with less developed animals- but with humans it doesn't work that well. We absorb influences from all over the place throughout all our life, and are able to critically think them through and reject or accept them. A human can still be conditioned, but it doesn't work all the time, it doesn't work well (when not forced) and it surely doesn't say that every child with a good, protected childhood is more likely to become a drug-addict ;-P
@556deltawolf11 жыл бұрын
MrPrimwhoozle I am well aware of behaviorism as I have studied psychology both educationally and as a hobby. And behaviorism isn't a flawed concept as the more we study the human brain and psychological behavior, we are discovering that many ideas that the behaviorists proposed are actually being proven as scientific fact. I also studied the anti-behaviorist movement and most of the critics rarely have any psychological knowledge. As for your counter statement, there is a huge difference between being well protected, and having your entire life's decisions made by your parents even when your old enough to make those decisions for yourself and I was referring to the latter.

This episode is mixed for me. I love the humor in this episode, mainly the helmet gag and the song interruption, and I do understand as to why Applejack acted so crazy. My only major problem is the ending. I would have preferred it if Apple Bloom talked to the monster about older siblings being too overprotective, then Applejack came out to fight the monster, with Apple Bloom stopping the fight, and standing up to Applejack. Regardless, this was a mixed bag to me.
@noiltea11 жыл бұрын
That is pretty much where I stand too. In fact I was absolutely convinced that the monster was going to turn out to be the customer until it became apparent I was wrong. This episode to me was... good. Not one of the greats but I didn't see anything inherently wrong with it either. AJ was weird, but it did add a layer of depth and made the headcannon that AJ is more like a mother than a sister cannon. So there is that.

The sudden overprotectiveness from Applejack towards her sister kinda came out of left field to me in this episode. I almost felt that the episode was told from Applebloom's perspective and thus was exagerated somewhat (Similar to the old Calvin and Hobbs cartoon). The episode was fine but I think they really missed a good opportunity to bring up their parents and why Applejack was feeling over protective of her sister.
@GrimReaperHound1311 жыл бұрын
Also, thank you for talking about the cover protective mom thing. I'm still dealing with my depressed and overly protective mom, even when I'm at a university and in a 6 year and going relationship with my boyfriend. Even when we're living in a very good town she still demands I go into a women's defense class when me and my boyfriend move into our own off campus apartment. They don't feel like he needs to because he is a man, however he's easily mistaken for a women, and my sister and I have to "learn to protect our selves". for more than 20 years she drilled anti-gun into us and one weirdo falls for my sis and my mom buys a gun. I'm so glad that you talked about how psycho parents can be and can drive their kids away with actions when they can be completely unstable. It makes me more sure about telling my mom to lay off somethings. Not everyone in the world wants to rape and kill me, and those who do will eat metal bat or be gutted by my house keys. We're not stupid.

I get what your saying with the responsibility in a family depending on how your raised. Both me and my brother (my brother sort of relied on me so he didn't learn as much) grew up in the country area outside town, so we'd get driven to school, and after school was over we'd walk to my grandparents. They were both busy with their jobs so we'd be there alone for a few hours. Because of that I had to learn how to cook and became more responsible at a younger age. So we never had the whole test thing, we were just trusted to know the limits and rules and obey them. And then I have friends who were raised like digi's friend and who can't really do anything. Its all a matter of how your family works

My parents were so over protective (among other things) that the day I was set to move out of college, I called them in the morning, told them not to get me, and then set out on my own. Thankfully everything worked out and we get along much better now because they finally learned to respect me because I could do it. Before when I talked about moving out, they never listened and yelled at me until I gave up and shut up. I was never really allowed to hang out with friends. Hell, I went with a friend to some church thing and they were mad when I was five minutes late returning from that and wouldn't let me go to anything else of that nature. Even today I sometimes feel like I shouldn't leave the house freely because my parents will somehow find out and yell even though everything is now fine between us. So I can definitely relate to Applebloom in this episode and having to do something drastic to prove yourself. That said, I still didn't like this episode aside from the final act. Boots wearing bad ass AppleJack in a cajun fiery bayou.

I never thought of the boundary issue in this episode till you brought it up. In my experience I was very different from the way both you and your friend were raised. My parents never set boundaries, and in fact had to literally push me to go past my comfort zone. I was the kid who hated the idea of going to the next grade, having a birthday or given a new responsibility or privilege. I remember I started to cry when I was six and my parents told me I had to cut my own food for the first time. When I learned how to ride my bike they forced me to learn, same with swimming or walking home on my own. Heck they set up my first date and forced me to go to my first party when I turned 14. (Yes I know very embarrassing) My most embarrassing one was when I was seven my father told me I had to go to the men's room alone in a restaurant. Being in AppleBloom's shoes/hooves the first time I was left alone overnight was when I was 15. I begged my parents to let me stay at my aunt's house or neighbor's and they both said I needed to man up. Heck even today I never really try to broaden my horizons on my own, but am willing to along with someone else doing it too.

Honestly, who cares? Yeah, people in the community want to focus on new things, and lack interest, but if people in the community aren't analyzing the "brilliance" of Canterlot Wedding, or making another remix of "At the Gala", so fucking what? These people still watch the show and still wake up every Saturday to view the next episode. If said people continued to make MLP-related video, they'll become bored of it, and they aren't able to branch out creatively. I love Avatar: The Last Airbender, but if my channel was dedicated to that show alone, I'd get bored of doing my videos. That's why people leave the LP community, or the ranting community, or the commentary community. And said people that "left the fandom" are still making well-made videos. Digi's Kirby video is extremely well-made, Living Tombstone's remixes and original pieces are catchy and fun, JackTHerbert's Let's Plays are entertaining, CR's Familiar Faces is still informative and funny, and that's just a few. In all honesty, if Bronies aren't dedicating their lives to a show intended to sell some cheap plastic to snot-nosed kindergardeners, who gives a shit?

Why the hell are you guys getting mad or offended by his smoking? It's one thing to find it different or strange that the format changed altogether, but to get upset by seeing him smoke is a plain stupid reason to unsubscribe to him. For all we know, he was doing this shit when he didn't show his face often or when his OC wasn't levitating a cigarette, but when he does it now all of a sudden it's a fucking travesty? A true fan of his work pays attention to just that, don't let the simple fact that he smokes repel you away.

I dont give a damn if HE smokes. I have a problem with people who know they can influence their audience and make smoking look like it's a totally ok think to do.
@NekoMaogura11 жыл бұрын
Feyrah Digi isn't smoking because he wants to influence others to smoke, its just something he does now and it's NOT his responsibility to keep other's from developing somewhat unhealthy habits.
@StitchesStatistic0811 жыл бұрын
Feyrah I really, REALLY doubt that he is attempting to advocate the use of smoking. He's stated before that he knows the health risks, and that he smokes maybe one a day because it helps him wake up. This is no different than people who drink energy drinks to wake themselves up, if you look at how terrible those are for you. One a day isn't going to kill anyone, and seeing somebody smoke on a youtube video isn't going to make everybody who watches pick up smoking because they suddenly think it's okay because somebody else did it this one time on this one thing they saw on THE INTERNET.

Digi's audience in mainly teens and young adults, I don't think kids want to take the time out to look up analysis videos for MLP, we all know what is good for us or not, hell I think half of us viewers smoke weed, cigarettes, cigars, black n milds, or even hookahs. Don't hold him accountable because he is one guy on the Internet who decided to smoke in a video and others are watching. He's a legal adult, let him do what he wants.
@Lunarbs11 жыл бұрын
Digi makes reviews of a child show with a cute little talking pony, chances are he has some child watchers. Yes he's cursed before but even if that encourages cursing in a child that isn't comparative to encouraging them to smoke. He even made a video all about romanticizing smoking and how it's "ok". I just can't support this, he's romanticizing smoking to young viewers of a pony show and that's a bit messed up.

This episode really resonated with me, because we've seen the CMC really have a pretty 'free' lifestyle, given the leeway to explore who they are since day one. Now, here's AJ suddenly cracking down on AB, changing the dynamic that she had grown up with. For me, this was a particularly interesting and at the same time, painful, episode to watch. Throughout my childhood, my parents largely allowed me to do what I wanted. With rare exception, it worked for everyone involved, largely because I was a smart kid, with a good moral compass. Also, the fact that I had been conditioned - through the less than pleasant interaction with my peers - to be antisocial, meant that there was little risk I would go do something foolish with the few friends I had. Then, at the age of fifteen, for no reason I have ever been able to discern, my Mother decided to change the dynamic of our relationship to one of a parent and child - I.e. authoritarian. What followed were several years of explosive, verbal 'fights' that permanently scarred our relationship. As you can imagine, because of this, I can sympathize with AB...

I get it... the boots was a metaphor for MLP... MLP is challenging gender stereotypes the same way boots did. Clever.

I hoped someone would notice that. It wasn't even intentional, but I loved how it came out that way.

I'm not sure if kids will see it the same way, but personally, my reading of the episode's moral was "even if a clock is right twice a day, it's still a broken clock". If they do read it that way, though, I doubt it'd lead them to do dumb stuff, since it still acknowledges the possibility of the broken clock being right; it just means they'd stop treating the broken clock as evidence one way or the other.

See, you did both. XD I'm definitely with you on this one with the episode being rather dull. I mean, I liked it and did not think it was a bad episode, but they spent a little too much time with showing scenes of Applejack babying Applebloom. They made their point early on making everything else redundant time filler. From what Tom said on Twitter shortly after the episode aired, I get the impression he really liked the episode so I am curious to hear his impression. For me the best part is everything that happened after Applebloom left to deliver the pies.

I first thought that your new style was a bad idea, but now it's starting to grow on me, it looks really good and suave the tired style. It reminds me of my daddy when he comes from work. Also I knew you were going to talk about AJ's boots when you showed that RAS section...clever indeed

no it makes a good point. About how boots something so masculine have now become a designer item for women and symbol women empowerment in many ways. Very much like how MLP breaks free of the mold allowing people of all ages and genders to enjoy it. I actually figured that was what you were doing I didn't find that bit pointless at all. Love the bed head by the way.

My parents still don't let me stay home alone for "safety reasons". It's not that they think I don't know how to feed myself, or that I'll invite a bunch of people over and wreck the place. It's just that they're worried that somebody will "break in" and do horrible, unspeakable things to me. (or my siblings, if any one of them were left home alone) The general rule is there has to be at least one other person in the house with somebody at all times. So if we're going out somewhere, but my big sis isn't feeling up to it, then either me or my younger sis or a parent has to stay home with her. The only ones who're really "allowed" to stay totally 100% home alone are my mom or dad, surprise surprise~ and keep in mind that my youngest sibling is turning 24 in August.

Digi, I know you said to keep discussion of your new style to the Analysis video, but I have to say that the _content_ of your new-style reviews is more interesting, even if you tend toward the personal at times. ANYWAY, I felt this episode was a good one, with a message that resonates with all of us. And boots. Yes.

I have quite a different read on the grown-up viewing of this episode. While yes, it is hamfisted and redundant, it gives a message not just to the kids - your parents and peers have your best interests at heart, even if they seem overbearing . but for their parents as well - don't needlessly cradle your child lest it will resent you for it and do something that will endanger them even more than what you were protecting them from. The tangent about your friend fleeing to the military to escape his parents' bubble paints a similar picture.

You should get a lavender color bathrobe, not only would it work with your theme, but also you'd be tottally pimpin'! On the other note, I liked your comparison as a beginning. I actually found AJs actions to be very much in character, even if a bit overcartoonish. Her level of overprotectivness is rather reasonable if you consider her relation with Apple Bloom as well as her whole family. AJ took the role of a mother for years and it shaped her character to be hard working, caring and reliable, but also it gave her the tendencies to be unrellenting, overhight sense of responsibility and overprotectivness. This is called the "Family Hero Child" and it often occurs in families where a parent(s) is missing or is otherwise incapable of parenting. I've seen this in AJ for quite a while now and I'm curious if the creators had this in mind.

This is like... the perfect video for me. I have always been fascinated with people other than myself. Seeing how different I am with other people make me realize my individuality and comprehend the human condition on a deeper level. I have said on several occasions that if I could have a superpower, it would be to experience a person's life up to that point. This probably comes from the frustration of being incredibly curious what and how people think even just by looking at their faces but not having the social skills to get that deep witj more than a handful of people. Anyway. The videoes in this series are like small snippets of Digi's life, someone I consider incredibly interesting to the point I listen to his podcasts where he rambles about random shit. So, I like this video. There should be more like it, I think.

Finally someone sees the the whole truth! I been waiting for this kind of an episode invoving applejack. One question though. Why do most hate this episode when we know that it's cannon that Applejack's parents are dead? I know someone who had to take care of four younger siblings when the person was only 8 years old and the youngest was only 2. And the closest family member was, 2,000 miles away. And the child home was even father! So looking at the facts Applebloom may only be under a year when that happened!

Did the hat and bow closet not bother anyone? I thought many people believed that Applejack's hat and Applebloom's bow were from their parents making the items mean something. Now they have dozens of copies of each? Can someone explain that?

Personally I dont get the point of putting your personal life into these videos. I don't care what you do in your free time nor do most people unless you are running a video log channel which this is not. I wont lie, I care about your content, not what you causally do in your spare time, I was interested in that I'd watch reality shows. I dont care that digi smokes, but I know tons of people that smoke that don't toss it down your face, because, you know they have respect for others. I never pretended Digi was professional because compared to other youtubers he isn't, but I did respect the effort he put into his content. It starts to become harder to watch these with his, "fuck you I do what I want" attitude and the whole, "No I am not a role model". Spoiler alert most youtubers arent, most of my favorite youtubers have some of the most fucked up upbringings you can think of, but they dont parade it in their videos. I think the new direction is just bad because it adds this, "I know people dont like this, but I am gonna parade it in their face anyways," I know people who do care about smoking and really like Digi's content and watched every video since they started, but are off put by recent attitude he has had about how he wants to do things now and that's an issue rather he wants to admit it or not. His passive aggressive attitude lately is probably more off putting to me than him smoking, but its a double hit to people who I know in the local community in my area that are feeling very put off his videos lately.

Perfect way of making a completely boring episode somewhat interesting...good job. It's sad however, that you have to do that in this supposedly superior new season. MLP really seems to go downhill...
@ShadowCatGambit11 жыл бұрын
Yeah. You're right about S4. The biggest overall problem for me is Twilight as a princess whom doesn't seem to learn anything anymore, while the rest of the lessons and morals don't really apply to the rest of the characters well, because they should be learning lessons about their elements from each other, but instead they learn lessons and morals that they should already know (sometimes from Twilight, whom they had already taught friendship to). Not to mention Twilight as the main character of the show no longer has much character growth, because now everyone is supposed to learn about friendship from her, so she doesn't tend to overcome obstacles through change.... S4 feels more like a regular children's cartoon, and I wish they hadn't make Twilight a princess.

I couldn't really concentrate on what you were saying in this video, unfortunately. I was too busy being rubbed in the face by your cigarette ash. Okay. You smoke. We get it. I like you bro, but now you're starting to act like vegetarians who keep telling everyone, 'Hey, you know I'm a vegetarian? I don't eat meat!' Seriously, we got your point in the Twilight Time video. Let's move on.
