The reason why Rick cares so much for Morty, is Because they've been together through thick and thin, even though Morty isn't Rick C137's Morty, since Rick C137 never had one. Rick actually is happy to have him, and we see that in many parts, while Rick's outbursts and such, are unhealthy ways of dealing with his depression. While Rick also doesn't want to lose this Morty, he's gone through thick and thin to keep Morty alive, cause Morty is Rick's way of staying somewhat sane.
