Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, was not always in a state of political strife. In 1885 the British army invaded Burma and deposed its King. He died in exile, ending a thousand years of monarchy. The royal family vanished, and the country was plunged into war and the longest military dictatorship of modern times. But after a century of silence they are back, and they’re on a journey to bring the family - past and present - back together. Filmed through three years of seismic change in Burma, this is the story of a family and a country emerging from the darkness.

I’m from Ratnagiri, and very few people here know about the last king of Burma in our region. Even his descendants have now assimilated into the local community. The irony is that Bal Gangadhar Tilak who was a freedom fighter from Ratnagiri was exiled to Mandalay and King Thibaw was exiled from Mandalay to Ratnagiri.

As a Filipino and as a citizen of ASEAN too, I was so grateful to know a piece of a Myanmar's history. Coming from a country colonized by a European and American power, you must educate future generation about the glorious years of the monarchy, pass this onto future generation and friends never forget your roots, your identity as a nation is very vital for future progress and development. May King Thibaw's homecoming signifies national unification.

As a Burmese I feel sad that our Monarchy had disappeared into thin air and new generations don’t see our royals anymore. In fact in history, King Thibaw was weak and highly manipulated by his Queen Supyalat who organised to assassinated the powerful and highly intelligent princesses in order to take control of power. They also neglected the ideas and suggestions from the well experienced ministers who served previous kings which resulted in the downfall of our country , monarchy and become British colonial country. In our history, we really had powerful Kings. History was seriously brutal when people only looked to hold on to power. 😢

Hello from Vietnam. I was deeply touched by this documentary. Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos were previously colonized by French empire instead of the British one. However, they were all the same, they brought down our mighty dynasties by guns and violence, exiled all the last kings to their overseas territories and divided the country both geographically and politically so that we could not reunite and find our past glory. I knew Burma had a long difficult journey to independence and just started to open for freedom. History generally is always written by the winner without mercy and justifying of what did actually happen. But gradually, I hope, no matter what political system and diverse culturally and ethnically, we all have to show respect for the past. Kings and dynasties are our past, however good or bad later generations might judge them, ultimately, they represent the unity of the country both physically and spiritually. We could not ignore them for any reasons. Last but not least, although not being a Burmese, I felt grateful for the effort of Mr. Soe Win, I believe soon Late king Thibaw’s legacy would eventually be carried back to Burma, next to his beloved wife, because nothing more cruel in this world than being separated from country you belong to. Peace and good hope for all Burmese fellows too.

I agree with what they said we can’t forget our history. It all leads back to lack of education and if we go farther and farther it brings us back to the fact that as a Burmese myself that we need to renew our mind and passion for our country. I love seeing how humbled and thoughtful the royal family are today. They’ve adapted to the turmoil of changes but at the same time it’s sad how forgotten they are. I’m greatful for Alex and his team for putting an effort as a history lover himself so that we are now a little more educated than before we watched. So thank you for what you did👏🙏. My last thought is this that at the end of the day, we are all human being created by the one true God. This world is passing, we can’t change our past. But we can do something about the future and that future won’t be beautiful without Jesus. I believe that if Burma would accept the gospel that has been preached by many great missionary like Judson who gave up his life for Burma and know the truth, Things will change because it’s the reality that we need God to intervene. The gospel changes situation. So let’s not drag ourselves farther from changes that we’ve been longing. This country has endured much suffering indeed and until today, there is no peace and rest. So it’s time to put our trust in Jesus! May the Lord strengthens this country and may his grace and mercy be upon it. Myanmar 🇲🇲 for JESUS!

I don't know if that would be possible. You see, King Thibaw was blamed for the colonization of Burma. He was unpopular because of the purge of the royal family by his mother in law. The third anglo-burmese war was easy because many people believed the British would transfer the crown into another prince, Nyaungyan, and did not resist.(could be propaganda, Idk) There were massive insurgents after the king got taken away, but it was too late. People also have this opinion that Thibaw brought down a golden age kingdom built by King Mindon.

Cyrus The Great Our constitution dictates that the military must be allowed to engage in politics. It must always have 25% of seats in the parliament. So, change the constitution. Problem solved, right? No. Here we reach the catch 22 of our constitution. It must have a total of more than 75% of votes in the parliament to get a referendum to make changes to the constitution. So, even if the pro-democracy NLD party gains all 75% of the seats in the parliament, which is a very impossible task btw, they would also need the military's participation to get the necessary votes. It wouldn't happen as long as all the military people in the parliament listen to the military's commander-in-chief who, understandably, doesn't want to weaken the military's political power. It took years to change two meaningless words in our constitution.

The lady princess is known as Green Princess who said she is an environmentalist is innocent of her destiny. While Soe Win him after the destiny of Myanmar lost monarchy, that is great for his country to understand that "without History, you lost recognition of your country". I do agree Mr. Soe Win regain his justice, and Myanmar will be delighted to know the history of Burma is a foundation of a strong country. His cousin Green Princess is a campaign for human beings internationally which I cannot understand what she wants to accomplished for human international while she cannot even first look at their destiny before going international. My view is who cares about Green Princess working for international humans, what is that? Being a Myanmar citizen should solve its problem first within Myanmar, why take care of international humans who has nothing to gain for her people? Soe Win is very realistic, his way of making it right is patience. One more option is to file a case at the United Nations against the British that drives them away from their King’s repatriation. Old British had colonized many countries, particularly in Africa that till today, much poverty still exists. Mr. Soe Win, my advice is to fight for what is righteous, what is just and the truth will set you free.

Too shallow or too naïve thinking. Even India can't get back their Koh-i-Noor diamond that is in British crown. LOL! Be realistic. Green princess is more realistic. What? Burmese royals must getting money from Burmese again? (Try to sue to British? No way, never can't get). What they've done? They lost to British to Burma and Gen. Aung San fought back from British and where were those bonkers royals were? Now, Burma is poor and undeveloped and those bonkers royals wanted to restore monarchy? For what? To get money from Burmese public. Why they didn't do like Aung San Suu Kyi for Burma. So, green princess is totally correct and realistic.

Myanmar was not quite in good terms with ethnic minorities at the time of this documentary. They didnt trust majority burmese cause of history long oppression of minorities. Thats why bringing him (icon of ethnic burmese absolute monarch) back at that time was not a good idea. Thats why said its not the time. Majority of Burmese will be watching this in tears. The most painful part of this whole saga is that King Thibaw was buried without any Buddhist Ritual. When a buddhist passes away, Religious Ritual is to be performed in him/her before Cremation. Or it is believed that he/she will be lost in the dark of afterlife. The pain is beyond any word to see that funeral rite was performed on King Thibaw only after many Decades.

The Burmese Royal family was the reason why the Ahom kingdom (in north east India) met it's demise in the early 19th century. The deposed Ahom king went to Bengal, to the British and called them to chase the Burmese out of present day Assam (north east india and the ahom kingdom). Not only were the Burmese defeated in Assam but they also went on to conquer Burma itself. As a descendant of the Ahoms, I would never support the Burmese Royal Family. They were also responsible for various atrocities in the Ahom Kingdom and the neighbouring Dimasa and Manipuri kingdoms. So, what happened to the Royal family was apt in my opinion and the British did the right thing.

Kipling's poem was from 1890, after the overthrow of Theebaw, so I suspect that his reminding of the King may have irritated some British diplomats and the Queen, who now included Burma in her "Empress of India" title.

Nanmadaw Me Nu who controlled country with her elder brother, Salin to Maung O, when king Bagyidaw became increasingly reclusive. Me Nu and her brother became de facto rulers of the country, and they were much feared for their tyrannical rule. Me Nu story is like this, one day during the reign of King Bodawpaya (father of king Bagyidaw) who established Amarapura Royal Palace, a falcon took the sarong of Me Nu who was taking a bath. The falcon dropped the sarong on the left wing of the southern royal palace. In consequences, sarong owner Me Nu arrived in the presence of the king. At that time, she was more than 11 years old. After royal officials conducted investigations, she grasped a chance of serving as a lady-in-waiting at the southern royal palace under the order of the king. Prince Sagaing (king Bagyidaw, son of king Bodawpaya, became the Crown Prince on 6 April 1809. Four years and six months later, his consort Hsinbyushinmei, gave birth to Prince Nyaungyan. Seven days later, she passed away. As Crown Prince Sagaing married with Me Nu in 1813, then she became the Crown Princess. Historians said that the female lineage of Nanmadaw Me Nu, Hsinphyumashin and Supayalat in the male-dominated Burmese monarchy is a very interesting one regarding the end of Independence and the monarchy.

So if he restores the monarchy, will it be as a figure head or will they have absolute power? I know he said he doesn't like party politics, but he also says he's doing it for the people rather than himself. What if the people prefer the current political system, would he still try to do away with it? If so, she's right when she claims he's doing it for himself. If the monarchy is restored as a figurehead, has he even considered what he'll do to help the people and the country? Will he work to set up better schools? Infrastructure programs to increase the peoples' quality of life? It's possible that as a figurehead, members of the royal family will receive tax money. Will they spend it on themselves, or on Myanmar and its people? Everyone living in Myanmar today has never lived under the royal family, so the royal family better be careful to prove to the people that their restoration is a positive thing. And they should consider their restoration as a temporary thing until they do so. Also, the "Green Princess" and her naive idealistic rhetoric makes my stomach turn.

If royals wanted to be hero then against to military dictators (they can't and they are trying to team up with military dictators). hello from Thailand! Thank you so much for this documentary, it gave me the chance to see Myanmar like I haven't before. It's quite a well-known fact that Thailand and Myanmar fought in countless never-ending wars in the past. Back then the victory and losses would to an extent, would distribute equally. Our kings and theirs would fight on elephant backs in their majestic gold thrones against each other. Geographically our countries are even next to each other, sharing many similar things ranging from cultures to even fashion! This certainly transitions over today, in this documentary I recognize many similarities between both the countries. However,.. It's not quite the same as in the past- in this documentary, I noticed how similar yet different we are from each other... I could see the same three-wheeled vehicle, so iconic in my country and all over the world with the label "Thai tuk-tuk cars", running on the streets of Myanmar without carrying any tourists (this is a rare sight in Thailand) or anyone paying special attention to it. I could see their equally grand royal palace lacking the same maintenance as ours (they would light ours up at night and the garden area would be filled with carefully sculpted trees). While we literally have a famous song about how every house has the king(Rama 9)'s pictures in it, younger generations in Myanmar are forgetting their king and are not receiving the historical education they should get... - Then it struck me, .. how damaging war and violence can be, how many people it could affect... Perhaps if the British didn't attack- my neighboring country would do as well as us or even better, and perhaps the first Myanmese person I knew wouldn't be my maid who used to be an illegal immigrant here. The potential is there, the history is there, the culture is there, the architecture is most certainly there and most importantly inspiring and kind people like the green princess is in your country! I'm sending my best regards and stay strong- I know you guys will get over this!

my country narrowly escaped getting colonized but why is that - it's only because our king, then, familiarize himself with the western culture and made connections there. However, all that is history I hold no grudges, and let's just focus on making the future a little better!

The main reason of Thailand being lucky with Europe’s colonialism is because Firstly, it “was geographically located to function as an ideal buffer zone between the British colonies of the Malay peninsula and the French colony of Indochina”. Secondly, the King also tried his best to implement that “mandala system” and keeping Thai the only language … etc. But non of that is waterproof But, Myanmar was right next to India, China and geographically more attractive to the Brit’s than Thailand would ever be. Plus, the richness.. Burmese Rubies, Burmese this Burmese that. Plus, Burmese king’s brother who was inventing and planning for industrialization of the nation (including the invention of underwater mines) was assassinated. The corrupt queen who led these efforts is well hated. No we didn’t forget. History made that those two kings and last queen the most power hungry and ignorant people ever Yes, Thailand was lucky

She kept saying “This isn’t the right time yet” that women knew since 2016 that this country hasn’t fully received the authoritative democracy even after the election. We have been controlled under the enforcement of military by many laws such as Constitution of 2008 which they had made to protect their dictatorship and seats in the Parliament. Even still now in 2024, we are yet to bring peace and stability to the country’s economy, politics, education, and unity of different ethnic groups. Burma, my homeland, my birthplace is the epitome of the victim of power. Greed indeed brings corruption.

King thibaw married his half-sister Suprayalat. His father King Mindon married HIS half-sister as well. King thibaws mother in law Hsinbyumashin (one of the senior Queen - one of King Mindon's senior wives) was power hungry, cunning and cruel. She wanted her daughter to be the Queen. So she brokered the marriage between thibaw and her daughter. She then planned a massacre with a few higher officials and her daughter and massacred all the princes and Princess who could potentially overthrow thibaw as king which is known as the Mandalay Palace Massacre. King thibaw was not in line to be the King as he was the son of one of the junior queen who was sent to become a female monk by her husband king Mindon. Only 2 princes escaped the massacre and was saved by some British resident and was brought to lower Burma. After a few years, king thibaw and queen Suprayalat carried out a SECOND massacre where they murdered all the other royals who survived the first massacre. More than 400-500 royals were murdered in total. King thibaw was a weak king and was ruled by his wife Queen Supralayat who was the puppet master who was known to have a cruel streak. They lost the anglo-burmese war 7 years after ascending the throne and was forced to abdicate by the British. The current situation where the Burmese royals (descendents of king thibaw and supralayat) are not recognised is probably due to the curse of the bloody massacre done to all of king mindons's (thibaw and Suprayalat father) children and other royals. I wish this important history was mentioned in this documentary.
