How some, or all, of the family died. At 10 years old, Molly dies after ingesting fluoridated toothpaste and holly berries. At 16, Barbara is murdered during a home invasion or implied domestic dispute. At 11,Calvin fell to his death after swinging off the edge of a cliff. At 49, Edie's husband, Sven, dies due to a contruction accident at the house. At 53, after having spent 30 years living as a recluse in a bunker beneath the house and tramatized at witnessing Barbara's death, Walter is hit by a train after stepping outside for the first time since. Sam marries a woman named Kay and they have three kids. Dawn, Gus, and Gregory. Only Dawn reached to adulthood. At 22 months old, Gregory drowns in the bathtub after his mother not looking, or watching, after him. At 13, Gus is crushed by a totem pole in a storm. Sam and Kay soon get a divorce. Sam went hunting with his daughter Dawn, and falls to his death by being bucked by a dear. Tramatized, Dawn moves to India, she marries Sanjay and they then have three kids.Lewis, Milton, and Edith. In 2002, Sanjay dies due to an earthquake and Dawn goes back to the Finch house with her three kids. At 11, Milton randomly disappears and Dawn becomes paranoid. 2010, Lewis dies by unliving himself at 21. Now desperate, Dawn decides they must all leave the house. Edie however refuses to go and after a heated aurgument between Edie and Dawn, she and Edith leave the Finch house. Edie is then found dead at 93 years old. Edith returns to the Finch house at 17 years old and writes down the history of her family into a book. The journal is made for her unborn child in case she should die before she is able to tell them the stories herself. In the end, the character is revealed to be Edith's son, Christopher, and shows that Edith sadly died at childbirth in 2017. That was a lot 🙂 Well, there you go if you didn't know how some of them died! Edit [1] : omg, thank you for the likes! If you have anymore questions, just comment down below ☺ Edit [2] : Omg, guys. Yall are blowing up my phone!! I don't mind though. But almost 600 likes in two-three days?! Crazy!!! Edit [3] : I forgot to put in how Dawn died (I think) - oop- anyways, she died due to a undisclosed illness Edit [4] : Omg, guys!!! Thank you so much for the likes!!! I really appreciate it 😁😁😁🤭 Edit [5] : Omg, thank you for 1K!!! Edit [6] : Hey guys! Thanks for 1.4K likes!! But please look on matpats video for it and it explains more and he gives a theory, like he always does lol, and it's more interesting. THANKS!!

Dying by childbirth has to be the saddest way to die. The mother doesn't even get to meet her baby. The one she's been growing and nurturing for so long by that point, waiting for the chance to finally be with them, only to be ripped away at the last moment.

I think what makes Lewis’ story so effective and memorable is the fact that, in every play through I’ve seen so far, the player has also become distracted by Lewis’ fantasy world, finding it way more enjoyable than the cannery work. That’s why it’s my favourite one

Bro, Edith died at 17 (Ty for pointing that out, I can't do math for crap :)). She said she was 22 weeks pregnant at 17, meaning she probably died during childbirth. Idk why it took me this long to realize that, I've watched gameplay for this game so many times before, but still, most of the family died as teenagers or younger, it's sad.

Lewis's story hit me like a freight train. I work at Amazon, and the monotony of doing the same thing day in, day out, caused me to create scenarios like this in my head. This whole story of how everyone dies is sad, Milton may be out there somewhere and no one knows it but its not certain. I feel like Edie likes telling the stories they way she did to cope with the fact that everyone honestly died from Neglect and not being cared for like they should've been. They all needed help and wanted to be seen by the adult figures in the house and were barely getting any so they wandered off in their own worlds and did things to get away and eventually died.

I just watched a gameplay of "The unfinished swan" and it explains what happened to Milton and where he went after walking through that door filled with nothing but light. He grew old being the king he probably dreamed of being, building things and going on journeys, He died of old age nothing more. he died being happy with the things he made though they were destroyed.

The game’s themes of grief, loss, and the power of storytelling are woven throughout the narrative, as Edith comes to terms with her family’s dark past and the secrets that have been hidden for so long. The game’s title, “What Remains of Edith Finch,” suggests that even in the face of loss and tragedy, there is still something left behind - a legacy, a story, or a memory that can be cherished and passed down to future generations.

I didn't understand Molly's death much until I looked it up so I'll explain to save people from the trouble!❤ Molly ate a whole tube of fluorinated toothpaste (enough to kill A CHILD) and then ate holly berries which are only lethal when someone eats like 20 (she had three which is enough to cause nausea, stomach pains, and HALLUCINATIONS because of the stress it puts on the body and lack of oxygen) so she most likely died in her bed due to the body stress and lack of oxygen. Barbara died at 16 when she was murdered and cannibalized(I think). The "monsters" she saw was the gang of hoodlums the radio announcer talked about. There was either a fight and her ear was torn off somehow or (what I think happened) they cannibalized her, cutting her up, and hid the bones or what they couldn't eat somewhere, maybe even inside the house.. which probably did leave Walter traumatized since he either heard or saw everything happen. Another theory I saw was that Rick killed Barbara for unknown reasons then fled the scene in a hurry, leaving one of his crutches behind which can be seen in Walter's bunker.

I just realized that Edith named her son (the player character at the beginning and end of the game) after Molly’s pet fish…and that the “mole man” Edie gave an interview about was actually Walter (at least that’s my take!)… oh and also that Milton left around drawings/murals about the other family members’ deaths that show up right before you experience them! (ie. the big cat before Molly’s story or the swing before Calvin’s one or the Jack-O-Lantern screaming before Barbara’s comic!) I think it also implies that Milton stuck around a bit after he went missing to make all these drawings or he did them before he disappeared since he was 11 at the time. It reminds me of a child drawing on the walls with crayons when they’re not supposed to…I’m gonna go cry again 😢 (Also am I the only one who thinks Walter sounds like Garfield?)

I love the parallel between Edie and Edith. At the beginning of the story Edith says “I never thought I’d come back to it” in reference to the house. In Edie’s story she returns to the Old Finch House in the ocean and says “I’ve seen the house everyday of my life, but I never though I’d return to it.”

Analogy about the family death curse: Warning: Harsh topics but yet again, this is the Finch family we’re talking about here. Every bit of their story is EXTREMELY depressing. My main thoughts on why the family curse exists in the first place is that they kept holding on to the past. They never tried to just live their life, they tried running from the inevitable and in the end, they paid for it. Heck, there was probably never a curse at all but they still thought there was. Because of this, tensions ran way too high and everyone argued because of it. If they all were more understanding and nicer to each other, most of them wouldn’t have died. The finches never took responsibility for what they did. They always blamed their misfortune and mistakes on some “family curse” instead of what really was the cause of it: Their own shame, doubt, fear, anger, neglect, etc. In every single one of these stories of death and every reason behind the graves of the Finches, there is an example of miscommunication and unwillingness to accept the reality of the situation: -Odin’s death was because he tried escaping a curse instead of accepting it. If he wasn’t at sea that day, he wouldn’t have sank. -If Edie never fought with Molly and sent her to bed without dinner, she wouldn’t have eaten the holly berries and died. -If Sam never said flying was impossible, Calvin would have probably never attempted to! (This one is somewhat of a loose connection but I’d love to hear your interpretation of this!) (Also, who tf has a tree swing so close to a goddamn cliff edge! Honestly, blame Sven for Calvin’s death because wth?!) -If Barbara loosened up a bit and didn’t hold on to her past, if she paid more attention to the radio talking about a gang in monster masks, she would’ve been safer and survived. And if she didn’t kick her boyfriend, Rick, out of the house over something so minuscule, she would’ve still had Rick there to help defend her if/when the gang eventually showed up. -If everyone wasn’t so tense, Walter would’ve felt safe confiding in his mom and dad about witnessing Barbara’s death. He would’ve had comforting people and family members to fall back on and would’ve never felt the need to get as far away from the house as possible! -If Sam wasn’t so desperate to get the perfect photo, he would’ve probably listened to his daughter when she said she didn’t want to hunt. If he had listened when Dawn said the deer was still twitching, instead of brushing off her concerns so quickly, he would’ve double-tapped it, not giving it the chance to throw him off the cliff. -If Kay and Sam got along more, they wouldn’t have had the fight over the phone. So, Kay would’ve been able to keep an eye on Gregory and Gregory wouldn’t have drowned. -If Sam sat down and had a proper conversation with Gus, they could’ve reached a mutual understanding about the wedding. If Sam had taken the time to properly listen to his only (alive) son and tried to see things from his perspective, Gus wouldn’t have felt the need to stay away from the rest of the family, therefore not being in the totem pole’s path of destruction. Also, you know, if Kay and Sam never got divorced, the wedding would have never happened in the first place… And, if Sam had considered, I don’t know, FORCING GUS INSIDE THE TENT WITH EVERYONE ELSE THEN HE WOULDN’T HAVE FUDGING DIED!!!! #1 Father of the Year here folks! Like I know it’s your wedding and all BUT YOUR CHILD IS ALONE IN A DEVASTATING STORM! HE COULD BE IN DANGER!!!! (If you can’t tell, I’m pissed at Sam!) -If Dawn wasn’t so overbearing and didn’t homeschool her kids, Milton wouldn’t have felt so lonely and probably wouldn’t have run away. (This one is also kind of a stretch but still somewhat makes sense.) -If Dawn just talked to Lewis and didn’t just get him a job at the cannery as an afterthought, he would’ve had a more enjoyable life. If Dawn had been there for Lewis more and was someone Lewis could confide in, he wouldn’t have felt the need to resort to drugs to solve all his problems. If you experience a world so bright and fantastical, everything else pales in comparison. It’s like you’re comparing your normal life to a celebrity’s life. All of the sudden, no matter what you do, no matter how much progress you make to be as good-looking, as healthy, as well-known as the celebrity, it’s never enough. It becomes an addiction, scrolling through the social media of the famous, judging your own body’s appearance, constantly obsessing over how many calories you’re consuming just so you can look somewhat like that one model in that one Instagram post. Because of his bad habit Lewis experienced the fantastical journey and trip of marijuana almost daily and ever since then, nothing could even come close to the amazing feeling and life he thought he once had. Because of this, no matter how much his mother, Dawn, begged him to focus on reality, no matter how many times his psychiatrist urged him to stop daydreaming, he just couldn’t. So when he finally realizes how dull and mundane his life truly is, how bland his daily routine is at the cannery, how boring his life has become compared to how it was when he was high or when he was a child….he ends it all. It’s a sad story that I feel everyone can relate to no matter what your current situation or background is. We’ve all either have experienced or will experience what Lewis had. The only difference is hopefully you can or you did pull yourself out of that trance and seek the help you really, really need. (I would also like to add that I have never taken or experienced drugs before in my life. The information I stated above are just my thoughts and take on the experience based on interviews I have watched, articles I have read, and stories I have heard. If anyone wants to correct me or share their own experiences with drugs, feel free to comment on this post!) -Edie was bound to die of old age eventually. However, if Dawn and Edie had gotten along better, they wouldn’t have fought the night Dawn and Edith left. Dawn maybe would’ve stayed longer or just long enough to be there for Edie’s death…She could’ve been there for her mother, making wonderful, lifelong memories during Edie’s final days alive. Yet, still even after her mother’s death, Dawn blamed Edie’s stories for her sons’ deaths. “Edith deserves to hear the stories.” “My children are dead because of your stories!” Truly sad… (ALSO WTH DAWN!!! WHY WOULD YOU TAKE AWAY THE BOOK FROM EDITH!!! THAT WAS A PRESENT FROM HER GREAT-GRANDMOTHER!) -I believe Edie was the only one who took responsibility for her wrong doings. I believe she told these stories to share her family’s last words. To honor and cherish their unique perspectives on life. I mean, she named the family cat after her daughter, who wrote about shapeshifting into a cat in her story…Like, that’s flipping adorable. Edie embraced the tragedies but never encouraged them. A bunch of people think Edie is the cause of the curse but I believe she was the only one fighting against it… In every single one of these stories of death, there was always a very simple solution to prevent the tragedy. (Except for Edith’s death of course!) It’s just interesting to think about!🤔 After all, in the words of Edith Finch herself: “-I think the best we can do is try to open our eyes…And appreciate how strange and brief all of this is” PS: Of course there is always still the possibility of these things happening regardless of the family’s relationship with each other. Milton could’ve still decided to run away, Lewis could’ve still committed sewerslide, Calvin most definitely probably would’ve still flown off the swing, etc. But there would’ve been less of an opportunity or chance of it happening. For example: If Molly was full before going to bed that night, she could’ve still eaten the berries merely out of curiosity instead of desperation but there is a very low chance of her feeling the need to do that. If the family was more approachable and more appreciative of what they had and what was happening instead of what they lost, most, if not all, of their deaths would’ve been extremely avoidable.

the gregory part hit home. i’ve lost many siblings (baby siblings) and every time i hear about this stuff it makes me so upset... i have some trauma over losing my siblings, the ones i waited months for but never showed up. i finally have gotten my new baby siblings and they means so much to me. whoever else is going through this stuff too just know your not alone, wether it’s siblings, cousins, your own kids, just know it’ll be okay and you’ll get it in the end.

Okay, I can't hold my excitement in. I didn't even watch the video yet because I need to let this out. My dad bought me this game 5-6 years ago (10-11 years old) and I played the entire game. It was absolutely stunning, the art made me feel so comfortable and I loved the major factor of grief and the nostalgia of growing up and having such experiences in life. I absolutely adored this game and I wished from the moment I beat it, to play it again with no memory to relive the experience all over again. I prayed that a youtuber I adore would come to play the game but it was to no avail, until NOW. I am SO incredibly excited to watch this gameplay!! 5-6 years of waiting little ol me can finally jump around and have the snack down of her life. Cheers to 17🥳🎉 Thank you Eddie, I love you!!💖✨️

A relatable story of tragedy, leatherbound in mystery, drama and intrigue. Edith's and the grandma's desperate attempts to give the family members deaths, and in extension lives, meaning, despite their rather meaningless ends. What a beautiful game. I love how this game is simple in its complexity. Or is it complex in its simplicity? Either one. You're literally just wandering around a house as someone narrates and you're just listening to the story unfold which was very beautifully crafted. I genuinely enjoyed watching this. I don't think I have a single thing I didn't like about it. The graphics didn't need to be hyper realistic and the musical score didn't need to be done by an elite symphony orchestra in order for the story to be amazing and I really think that the story was this game's strong point. I'm honestly running out of ways to compliment the design, conception, and production of this game. I would love to have my mom play this now. I think she would really enjoy it.

Such a beautiful game with amazing story telling. I'm glad you got to play through it. So heartbreaking and I think all of them were very unfortunate deaths. Edie after living into her 90s and witnessing pretty much her whole family die I think created these elaborate stories of their deaths to keep their memories alive. It was a way to help her cope but drove the rest of her family crazy. The fact she kept adding to the house and basically keeping the rooms the same like a memorial and just sealing it off is so heartbreaking. Then she died after watching the remainder of her family run away from her. I remember the first time I saw the ending I was so sad knowing that Edith didn't make it but hopeful that her son will be able to live on and at least know some of his family.

Hey Eddie, glad to see you're finally playing this game! Sometimes it still random infects my brain which is weird, but probably a good sign for the game. Anyway! I've got a great game suggestion for you, though unfortunately I don't exactly expect for you to ever really see this or get to it, because it's not very well known, at all. It's an indie surreal/psychological horror game called 811. There's only a few playthroughs of it on KZbin. Personally, I think it ABSOLUTELY should be up there with games like Sally Face (hey, btw did you know there's a Sally Face 2 in the works?), Fran Bow, and Little Miss Fortune. So far, only chapter one is out, but there is a second game in the works. I'd adore to see you play this game, I can only IMAGINE all the jokes you'd have and how you'd react when all the freaky shit starts going down. PS: Incase you do see this, I think you should know that Ryker, the main character, is non-binary and uses They/Them pronouns, because you might be the first large KZbinr to play this game and it'd be unfortunate if people then started getting their pronouns wrong because it'd be the only impression they've got of the character.
