Carole returns from a holiday to find Pine Hollow deserted and believes that her friends have forgotten her birthday. A valuable horse transported from France arrives at Pine Hollow but escapes into peril. A thief seems to be operating in the stables and Veronica is sure it is Scooter.
Based on the series of popular books for young readers, The Saddle Club follows the lives of three aspiring equestrians developing their riding skills at Pine Hollow Stables. Each of the girls has assorted personal baggage: Tomboy Stevie's impulsive nature gets her into constant trouble, Carole rides to overcome a family tragedy, and Lisa is an overachiever with a social-climbing mother. Despite their problems (and the schemes of a spoiled rich rival, Veronica), the girls' love of horses and strong friendship with one another is always enough to help them overcome any obstacle.

Yeah, but I think Lisa has changed quite a bit too. You can tell that she is taller and looks older. Same with Carole. Stevie has definitely changed the most, though. However, the first season was filmed when the girls were around 12 years old, and this second season was filmed when they were around 14 years old, and that's an age were most kids grow a lot and many begin puberty around that time. So even though it's "just" a two-year gap, a lot can happen in that time.

I don't know why they changed the actor that played Red in season 1, but I assume that the actor was probably not available when they were filming this second season. However, if they couldn't get the original actor, I think they should have created a new character instead. Instead of just hiring a new actor and expect everyone to just accept him as Red, they should have made up a reason for Red having quit his job at the stables (perhaps because he was going to university; Red was only 17 in season 1, after all). Then they should have let this new actor play the role of a new stablehand that Max had hired to replace Red. I think I would have had a much easier time accepting him if he were playing a new character. I think it would have been very easy for them to have done this, and they would only have had to do minor changes to the script. Almost everything that "Red" does and says in this season could have been done or said by the new stablehand as well. Kristi evidently has crushes on almost all boys that come to the stables, so it would be believable that she would have a crush on this new stablehand as well, even if he wasn't Red. About Melanie - I know that Marisa Siketa, who played Melanie in season 1, decided not to return to "The Saddle Club" for season 2 because she had gotten a part on another show. So if they absolutely wanted to have Melanie on the show anyway, they had no other choice but to find a new actress. It would be believable to make up a new character to play a new stablehand, but obviously you couldn't make up a new character to play someone's sister. It wouldn't believable if they just out of the blue said that Lisa had yet another sister. So I understand that they re-cast Melanie, although it is of course hard to get used to a completely new actess playing an "old" character. I liked Marisa Siketa as Melanie in season 1, but one thing I do like about Jessica Jacobs (who played Melanie here in season 2) is that she has more of a physical resemblance to Lisa, and also to Lisa and Melanie's mom, Mrs Atwood, so they do look more like sisters than Lisa and Melanie did in season 1. Also, I like that Lisa and Melanie have more of a sister relationship between them in season 2. In season 1, they never got along and Melanie was often mean to Lisa, but in season 2, Lisa is acting more like an older sister and Melanie is more believable as a younger sister, I think.

Ian Gamble - Yes, but it was this "Melanie" who died, not the girl from season 1. The girl playing Melanie in this episode and the rest of season 2 is Jessica "Jessie" Jacobs, and she was sadly killed in a railroad accident at age 17, about five years after this season was filmed. The girl who played Melanie in season 1 was Marisa Siketa, and she chose to leave the show after the first season because she got another part on a show called "Neighbours".
