A company called Whooshh Innovations has come up with a fish transport system that gives migrating salmon a free joyride over an impassable dam. It’s nickname The Salmon Cannon.

Normal fish ladders are passive -- ie they have negligible ongoing running costs. The salmon cannon would have much more ongoing maintenance.

Wondering if the salmon are surviving the ride really without wounds/harm to their mucous lining/fins (only thing protecting them from parasites and similar problems that originate from being submerged constantly) and if the stagnation of water and slowed flow of water due to the dam is causing issues for the body of water. THIS IS NOT A FREE RIDE. When the salmon gets to the scanner and gets accepted, it essentially signs a contract by entering the tube.. you'll have safe passage, but you'll have to be caught by someone upstream.... The system is designed to get all the lazy free loader salmon from going around and riding it again.
