A note as to why the SNES and Genesis sprites are different sizes. Samurai Showdown (like many NeoGeo fighters post Art of Fighting) would zoom out the playfield camera as the players got farther away from each other. Both the SNES and the Genesis didn't quite have the horsepower to pull off this effect (although TAKARA did put in a halfway decent zoom out in their port of Art of Fighting) so they instead opted to make one port be at max zoom out (SNES/SF) and one at normal camera position (Genesis/MD). This is also why the SNES port can have Earthquake as his zoomed out sprite isn't too large for the system but the Genesis port doesn't (the sprite was possibly too large, but also Earthquake becomes hard to play in the cramped default camera).
@FamicomDojo7 жыл бұрын
+Aruges01 Awesome! So perhaps they didn't have to even make new sprites, but just used the existing minmaps? That would be cool. The Super Famicom/SNES could do some panel scaling natively, but the Super FX is what supercharged it.
@Aruges017 жыл бұрын
Well, the Neo Geo didn't have mipmaps as it was able to scale everything with its sprite scaling hardware (cool bonus fact, EVERYTHING you see in a Neo Geo screen is a sprite, including the backgrounds. They construct backgrounds from multiple sprites arranged in strips), so TAKARA based the SNES/SF character sprite sheets on the NeoGeo sprite sheets at max zoom and the Genesis/MD ones at normal zoom. More than likely though, they still had to do some modification to the sprites to reduce their memory footprint for the smaller carts (both SNES/SF and Genesis/MD carts were 32 Mbit and the NG cart was 118 Mbit) and work in the smaller ram sizes of the consoles. So, they probably have some missing animation frames, reduced colors (Genesis/MD could display only 64 colors at once and the SNES/SF only 256 compared to the NeoGeo's 4096, not to mention limits on colors per sprite), and I would bet even the Genesis sprites are a tad bit smaller than the originals to fit in the Genesis' hardware sprite sizes. What's kind of baffling to me, though, is the missing content (non Earthquake) on the Genesis port. Given the reduced color pallet, I would have assumed that there would be plenty of space to include the intro screen, cut scenes, etc. Perhaps the full size sprites still took up too much space? Also, the Sega CD port doesn't do the camera zoom out effect or have Earthquake even though the Sega CD has pretty beefy scaling hardware and co-processor. Kind of a wasted port effort, that...

The truth is it's a SNK game and SNK had cross licensing agreements with Sega for Sega games to be ported to the Neo-Geo and in return Sega would get a superior port over the SNES. The Genesis/Mega Drive was given larger sprites to make up for the lack of scrolling parallax backgrounds. The SNES had all of the scrolling parallax backgrounds but to make the Genesis/Mega Drive more appealing it was given larger sprites even though the SNES can handle up to 64X64 tile sprites compared to the Genesis/Mega Drive's 32X32. Because they made the sprites smaller they gave Earthquake to the SNES because the Genesis/Mega Drive could not handle anymore than the 32X32 that it was already displaying.

@@tskraj3190 There were no Sega games on NeoGeo though that is unless you mean the NeoGeo Pocket Color which came out several years after the original NeoGeo. Even then only 3 Sega games were ever made for NGPC: Sonic Pocket Adventure, Evolution: Eternal Dungeons, and Puyo Puyo Tsuu. That sad part is that Sega got 3 Samurai Shodown ports and none of them includes Earthquake, in every version they got, the roster got less and less small. Genesis version is missing Earthquake, Sega CD version is still missing Earthquake and had Amakusa but you can't pick him whereas Game Gear version is missing Earthquake, Tam Tam, and Wan-Fu altogether, you can play Amakusa in that one but only through a code. The Sega Saturn version was cancelled, it would had been the first Sega version of SS1 to include Earthquake but since SNK is handling their NeoGeo CD at the time, only a PlayStation version was ever made. The Sega Saturn version was suppose to be a 2-in-1 collection like the PS1 release where it include both SS1 and SS2 to promote the Samurai Shodown RPG at the time which came out on NeoGeo CD, PS1, and Sega Saturn.

The reason why the SFC version got smaller sprites was because they choose to include Earthquake in the game. As you may know Earthquake had the largest sprite in the SS NeoGeo release, putting him in the game means shrinking all the other character sprites. The Sega Genesis version took out Earthquake so that it doesn't cut down all the other characters therefore it got bigger sprites but missing 1 character and 1 stage while SNES got Earthquake but all the other characters had to be smaller. Had they include Earthquake in the Genesis version then the game would had smaller sprites like the SNES port as the 16-Bit processor within those systems couldn't accomodate Earthquake's size otherwise he would just slow the game down.

cartridge capacity limitation back in the 90's prevented SNK games from being correctly converted to snes and megadrive consoles . if 1GB and beyond storage chips already existed , we would have had the exact replica of Neogeo Games on cartridge consoles
@ZeroHourProductions4077 жыл бұрын
the din connector on the back of a model 1 is the same as that of a master system, which lacks stereo output support, even though the audio chip in the Genesis is more than capable. model 2 and newer has an updated 10 pin connector that enables stereo output through the cable. yet then suffers from a weaker audio chip for cost cutting. super Famicom or SNES revisions never lost the audio capabilities since launch. but Nintendo still felt the need to gimp the standard video capability of the console in later models.

snes has 6 buttons too...
@SeanOrange7 жыл бұрын
Sure, but they're not laid out as intuitively as six face buttons. I dealt with this configuration for Killer Instinct for SNES, and while so got used to it, I would have definitely preferred a fight pad (which I now own).
@james425197 жыл бұрын
well i never had trouble. street fighter is still as easy to play. i see nothing wrong with the way the buttons are really. all new games have the same button layout too really. i also hate arcade controllers too though since i am not good at joysticks to move around too because didn't play arcade games back then. so guess depends what you played as a kid maybe

The Genesis version is missing more than just Earthquake. There are entire moves completely missing (like Haomaru's or Nakoruru's hard Slash attacks) making the game play completely different than the original. The SNES version does have the entire moveset on the other hand. The backgrounds are also missing a lot of details in the Genesis version. In the end there's no point in playing these versions when you can play the PS1 and/or Saturn version or the arcade perfect PS2 version (which can be played in progressive scan over component) The scaling on the 3DO version sucks. Another thing, the SNES DOES support transparencies and the Genesis can also do opaque transparencies (which was heavily used to fake a higher color palette) In fact, since you played Mortal Kombat at the end of this video, you should have noticed the character shadows are in fact transparent.
