This was my favourite episode. I absolutely loved this personification of Death. She is so compassionate and kind. I do wish she could have at least passed on the phone code because that is something I would be worried about too. Hob is an interesting character. I think this is the first time I have seen someone gain immortality and not regret it. Usually it would have been him enjoying the first years and then becoming more and more disheartened as they lost friends and family. I’m glad that Dream met him in the end, a few years late, but apologizing for keeping his friend waiting.

Well, that was kind of the point of that scene, that we have to learn that life goes on without us and, most of the time, our time comes when we are least expecting it. All the more reason to cherish every moment.

One of my favorite sneaky details is that when Dream talks with Shakespeare, their conversation is in iambic pentameter. Neil Gaiman is such a nerd. I love it.

Second only to Pratchett's Discworld's Death, in my opinion, and probably only because ʜᴇ's the protagonist of some of the books and thus gets more character development.

One of my favourite things is how the Hob Gadling story ties in wonderfully with Death's characterisation. Just like how she came to Dream when he was sad to help him feel better, she could tell he was lonely all the way back when, and so gave him a constant friend.

"I find myself wondering about humanity. Their attitude to my sister's gift is so strange. Why do they fear the sunless lands? It is as natural to die as it is to be born. But they fear her. Dread her. Feebly they attempt to placate her. They do not love her. Many thousands of years ago I heard a song in a dream, a mortal song that celebrated her gift. I still remember it... That forgotten poet understood her gifts. My sister has a function to perform, even as I do. The Endless have their responsibilities. I have responsibilities. I walk by her side and the darkness lifts from my soul. I walk with her, and I hear the gentle beating of mighty wings... "

If you ever get the chance, there’s a comic about Death called “Death: The high cost of living”. It shows her taking human form and sharing in life to better understand us and really kind of explores some of her thoughts. While it doesn’t give a ton of backstory, it’s a good read. Also, this is a reaction channel, if your reaction is a personal one and you want to share that, share it! It’s your space. :)

The reuniting Scene is interestingly an Addition to the series and one that was necessitated by the fact that they prolonged Morpheus Imprisonement to catapult him into the 2020s, instead of the 70s, where this was originally written and set. Thus, in the comics, he actually made the appointment. he Still showed up a bit late, which prompted the "I've heard it rude to keep friends waiting" line, but he _did_ show on the correct day. I do think it is cool to have it so that he actaully _couldn't_ go, if he wanted to or not.
@0okamino

*Late 80s, originally. In both versions, I really appreciate the question that it raises. If Morpheus hadn’t gone through the ordeal with being captured, would he still have been motivated to show up, and accept that he really did enjoy having a friendship with Hob?

Something sometimes done in comic books, especially at the time Sandman was published, was they'd have these shorter stories told in one issue to give a rest or even a break from the longer stories. These vignettes would tend to be more intimate tales giving an insight to various aspects of a character, though sometimes they could also be a more fun romp with a villain of the week type enemy. Loved that they had these stories, easily my favourite episode in the series.

You apologise for finding things that resonate because it's "just" a story, but stories are important :) And this episode is a perfect example of WHY. To pull my favourite quote from the Sandman comics, "Things need not have happened to be true. Tales and dreams are the shadow-truths that will endure when mere facts are dust and ashes, and forgot." I also love the contrast in personalities between Death and Dream in this episode, they're so perfectly acted. Even Dream says "I am far more terrible than you" and he's right. Death is something everyone shares, it connects us, draws us together. But dreams can be isolating. There are as many different experiences of dreams as there are people. Dreams can bring hope certainly, but also false hope. Dreams can make us relive our darkest moments, leaving us to carry the anxious echoes through our waking hours, or a dream can let us live our fantasies, only to snatch them away again. We can get lost, even while awake, dreaming of a hoped-for future, and fail to see a better path in the present. [/waffling] ...I may have given this too much thought, lol. And of course, in the context of the Sandman universe, we've already seen that Dream is far less forgiving than Death. Loved this reaction, a really thoughtful and relatable discussion, thank you for sharing :)

This episode is absolute dynamite. I was one of those who was sceptical about the casting of Death - you may be aware she was a very controversial choice because the original depiction of the character is iconic, and could hardly look more different to this actress! But my God, she could not have done it better. Such a human kindly performance. And the scene with dear old Harry reciting the Shema absolutely destroyed me (I'm not even Jewish) just like it hit you. A fantastic reaction, and a fascinating analysis afterwards.

Jess, you sharing your thoughts on your own life is what sets you apart (among other things) from other reactors. Other reactors are touched, even deeply moved by this episode, but often don't reflect past their emotions and onto their actual lives like you do (or if they do, they don't share it with us). It takes someone present and self aware and seeking understanding. I also get wanting to be guarded with oneself on the internet and parasocial complications, but I'm grateful you can share that much of your self to this collection of strangers.

Now for another episode of comic to screen! So this one is unique. This episode is composed of two different issues of the comic. The first half of the episode concerning dream walking around with his sister death is the final issue of the first Volume of the Sandman known as "Preludes and Nocturnes." The second half of the episode is an issue of the comic called "Men of Good Fortune." its issue 13 of the second volume called "The Doll's House." With the end of this episode the show now begins "The Doll's House." Now this episode is the closest the show ever gets to a perfect 1:1 translation. Literally the only change they made was that in the comic the second person Death and Dream meet with before Death takes them is a stand up comic who gets electrocuted on stage in the middle of her act. In the show its the man who drowned on his honeymoon.

Imo, Hobb Gadling is the Metaphor for what's so great about humanity that Death was trying to teach Dream. The very thing he was dismissive of: Life. When Hobb was on top of the world, he wanted to live to keep experiencing these joys. When Hobb hit rock bottom, he wanted to live as there was nowhere to go but up. Hobb wanted to live not because living had something Dream would consider higher in grandeur and purpose, he wanted to live just to live. The very act of it was self sustaining.

This episode is a great example of a brilliant choice when adapting from the original comics. The two stories in this episode came from two issues of the comics: issue #8 "The sound of her wings" which came immediately after Dream getting all his stuff back, but the Hob Gadling issue was not till issue #13. If they had showed it in the same sequence as the comics, we would not have met Hob Gadling until after the end of Season One. But having them in the same episode, one's about death, the other is about life, they complement each other so very very well.

I always comment the same thing on people's reactions to this episode. When Death first came into existence she absolutely hated her job. In the beginning she didn't feel anything it was only when she decided to do what mortal beings did, live as a mortal, that she started to understand and feel. So, every 100 years she becomes mortal and lives for a day and at the end of that day does she then reap herself.

"Dream" full name is Morpheus Lord of Dreams *AND Lord of Nightmares* that why he has a melancholy, gaunt, and gothic appearance and demeanor (and that he's been existing for millions of years), he's still internally "shaken" and upset about a human having imprisoned him for several years); and like many in real life, those persons that are Gothic or Goth-punk may look or seem "dark" or sometimes aloof and melancholy, they do have a heart and a cordial side... also something that didn't quite come through about Death, is "she" appears differently to each person that she goes to.

Best episode of the season, which isn't too surprising since it's based on two of my favorite issues of the comic. They did a really good job weaving them together--if I remember right meeting Death and the Hob story are like ten issues apart in the comic. I love that they kept the detail from the comic that the background conversations in the pub are the same 500 years ago and today--people complaining about taxes, claiming the world is ending/has gone to shit, even telling the same punchline (to a joke we never hear). Amazing discussion afterwards. I'm sorry you've been through it but glad that you're identifying what makes you feel happy and doing it. That's what life is FOR, everything else, all that "success" stuff, is just there to make that possible. (Of course, I'm biased, a couple years ago I quit my job and spent a bunch of money on a degree to switch to a new career that pays way less, and I'm so glad I did.)

_The Sound of Her Wings_ is issue 8, and _Men of Good Fortune_ is issue 13, so not quite _that_ far apart. However, enough has happened in _The Doll's House_ by the time you get to MoGF, it could understandably feel like 10 issues apart. Funny enough, 10 issues up from TSoHW is actually ADo1000C. ;)

I am a new subscriber and have so enjoyed your genuine reaction to this great show. I was crying throughout and I love that you tied it to personal experience. I was doing the same thing. It really made me think about my own life. The 2 stories tied together so wonderfully. Yay, I loved Midnight Mass so gonna go watch your reaction.

Love the reaction Jess, its so great to see a production that is so good. Death really was cast brilliantly, heck the whole cast is amazing. Also love that Hob is Ferdinand Kingsly, Ben's son, really quality actor, cant wait to see what else he does.

Jess - never apologize for relating how episodes impact you personally. The whole point of stories is how they impact us, and how we find both similarities and differences with others in our own reactions.

You meant Noel Fielding didn't you? Or as Mark Lamaar calls him, a 40 year old crow. He is great on Never Mind The Buzzcocks too if you wanted to look him up.

Hob Gadling’s story is possibly my favorite from the comics and it was beautifully portrayed here.

Dream is so dramatic. Breaking up in the rain just because the guy he'd been seeing regularly for 500 years asked "What are we?"

I understand what you are ta;ling about. I suffered a stroke last month and am still working to recover. The "once I hit this level things will be betterer" feeling is one I can relate to. For me, its relearning how to speak without sounding like i have marbles in my mouth.

I read the graphic novels years ago and never thought live action would do it justice - this episode proved me VERY wrong!

As we saw in both stories in this episode, Death has been struggling to get Dream to connect with humanity for centuries. She presented Hob as a wager, but I think she was sneakily setting up a play date for Dream every 100 years in hopes that Hob's good nature would crack Dream's shell.

As a fan of the comic, I had some trepidations when this episode aired because it was so important to me that they get Death _right._ I am so pleased that they did. I also love the little romance subtext they gave Dream and Robert, you can ignore it if you like, but it's there for those who want that sort of thing. I love how he almost looks jealous when Dream talks to Shakespeare.

YES. Loved the little romantic subtext, too. I'm glad they made it as light as possible so it could be interpreted by people like us as romance, and by other people as pure friendship --- both of which are very powerful forms of relationships.

As someone who's lost his little brother earlier this year from a vehicular accident, I was also bawling through the entire death scenes. I hope my brother embraced Death with an understanding 🥹

So many beautiful things to say about this ep., but my favorite thing is that Death's boon wasn't about granting Hob immortality.. that's merely the precursor to what she actually did- gave her brother a friend ♥ (His big sis & __*spoiler*__ are the only ones who give a fudge about Dream imo, and I just love this arc for showing how well he responds to their positive influence/brotherly affection ^_^ --really hoping we'd see more of the Endless sibs in s2!)

“How’s your friend?” “He’s just this guy I know.” “Oh, come on. How’s your friend?” “I told you, he’s just… wait, I see what you’ve been doing. Yeah, okay, I really should go see my friend.”
