The Sandman | Deleted Scene | Dream & Death | Netflix

First debuted at CCXP, this deleted scene from The Sandman episode 6 "The Sound of Her Wings" gives us a little more insight into why Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) is the way she is, as she explains her journey pretending to be a human to her brother Dream (Tom Sturridge). The Sandman is now streaming on Netflix, with more stories currently in the works to tell the tales of the Endless.

I love how Dream seems to be more relaxed and less broody when he is with Death. He tends to kind of smile more. It’s like she, calliope, and Johanna unlock his softer side.

​@@darkroge Some unfortunately vocal people had a few...issues with the actress being black, when the character in the comics and the one (surprisingly good) DC animated short is a white, goth-y type. That said, the portrayal of the character is ultimately more important than if they look the same, and Kirby absolutely *nailed* the character. Perfect casting. Plus like, it's a personification of an abstract concept. Who cares what they look like.

Probably because Dreams lines in it were re-recorded and given to Death in a different scene, and they couldn't find another way to intro into this one

Pacing, narrative flow, etc. There are any number of reasons to cut a great scene, most of which just come down to the fact that it's just not adding anything significant to the story. In this case, there's nothing in this scene that isn't more effectively communicated at other points in the episode, making it redundant.

My guess is they avoided the reference so Netflix could avoid the shitstorm of people clamoring for a Death: The Time of Your Life/The High Cost of Living spinoffs when they hadn't even committed to a second season of Sandman yet.

A lot of her character has to do with whats unseen, and i appreciate that, but heck i'd love to see a series showcasing Kirby's range after her amazing performance in the series!

@@austinboylan5476 Because, and I'm paraphrasing what I heard Neil himself say in some interview about this - she knew he wouldn't like it. Dream has ego, and he'd been annoyed if someone came unprecedented to his help, and like Death mentions somewhere, if he wanted help he'd called for her. If not, the Endless carry about their own duties without bothering others.

@@advait35 You’re right, here’s the quote from from an interview between Neil Gaiman and Hy Bender, in Bender's The Sandman Companion (1999): Bender: I know another [question you're often asked] ...is: "When Burgess dies, wasn't Death there to meet him? And if so, wouldn't she have found out at that point about the Sandman being imprisoned by Burgess?" Gaiman: Right, with the implication that this is a huge hole in the plot. But to my mind, Death knew about the Sandman being trapped as soon as it happened. Everyone in his family did. The reason his family didn't free him isn't because they weren't aware of his situation, but because they aren't a superteam; rushing to the rescue isn't what they're about. The Endless stick to hoeing their own farms. As personifications of things, they're not causative. They' re barely reactive. Besides, even if the Endless had acted to break the Sandman out, he probably would've been angry at them for doing so. He definitely wouldn't have been anything approaching appreciative. Bender: Why? Gaiman: Mostly because he felt it was his responsibility to take care of himself.

I have just read this episode in the comics and I am now salty that the show cut Death's full Mary Poppins reference. "There's this guy who is literally a banker, and he doesn't have time for his family or for living or for anything and Mary Poppins comes down and she shows him what's important. Fun, flying kites and all that stuff." That was such a great subtle jab at Dream. As for this content, how did she just choose to make herself human and how was she able to meet herself? I would have liked to see that and to Dream's inquiry about why humans fear Death, The Sunless Lands doesn't exactly sound like paradise. Tbh it kinda sounds like a sector of Hell.

There's something about Kirby Howell-Baptiste's performance, the nuances in her expressions and inflections that make her... different from the comics' version. Not better, not worse, just... a different Death. And then I realized it's because, unlike the comics, this Death embodies all three phases of Eve, the maiden, the mother, and the crone, birth, life, and death. She is neither, she is all at once. We love her, we despise her, we fear her, and we hope for her.

I'm torn with this scene, in the comics (I don't want to be that guy), Death doesn't talk about the one day alive every century thing and Dream is said that he'd never ask. On the other hand, I can't think of another way you'd get this tidbit in outside of spoken dialogue.

In the Endless Nights stories, we got a look at a parliament of higher beings billions of years ago. Death was a cold, stuck up, b---- who only showed up long enough to inform everyone that she would do as she saw fit regardless of what agreements and treaties they made.

Howell-Baptiste's flawless performance is proof that critics of recent casting choices might not be racists, after all. It's the bad acting and (mostly) writing which makes them give bad reviews, not a change in skin tone.

Don't you remember that some people were mad when she was casted? If something, it proves that these people are indeed racist because they thought first and foremost about her skin colour. I guess it's a plus that they changed their mind when she proved to be a good actress, but wouldn't it be nicer if they gave her (and the casting people) benefit of the doubt and waited to actually see her? It would make them look less silly at least. And yes, I know that people like that aren't some evil white supremacist KKK affiliated types and that many of them are probably actually better people than me in real life. Everyone is affected by unconscious prejudice, everyone can grow as a person if they try not to act on them and un-learn them.
