Both the epics are interestingly about restoring/avenging wronged women and thereby establishing rule of the righteous. But your contention that sati started as a response to invasions is contested by the well known Sati of a wife of Sundara Chola after his death and recorded in their own chronicles. From literature it is clear that women who performed Sati were highly regarded and hero stones, shrines were erected in their memory. Also, according to legends multiple wives of Krishna committed self-immolation after his death. However these were regarded as "voluntary" and no force has been mentioned. IMO, the practice predates Islamic invasions and though an exception was regarded highly, glorified, deified and may have been encouraged in some communities. Similar practices were prevalent across the ancient world from Egypt to China so India was not an exception. The British indeed sold the narrative of the uncivilized native in need of colonization to civilize and Islamic invasions may have increased the incidence of sati/jauhar but that does not prove that there was no such practice earlier.
