Kinda sad to see the farmers markets end for 2024. I am sure when you are doing the cleanup that at the same time you are planning for the next year. Always good to see your ambition.
@wishwellfarms
@wishwellfarms Ай бұрын
Yes, a little sad mainly because I don’t have any more cash flow and not as much interesting content, but that’s OK. It’s all part of farming. I am constantly thinking about next year every time I’m out working, things that I want to change or not grow or things I want to improve or try growing again. After 25 years of farming, it’s all about simplifying and streamlining my operation and of course, thinking about the succession of my farm.

To be honest, if you got there a few days earlier, you would’ve probably been able to collect all them side shoots and probably been able to make a couple extra dollars on the side from, side shoots alone

Yeah, a week earlier we did our last cauliflower harvest and took it to Market, but I was gone that weekend and Emma didn’t know the broccoli shoots were so nice but it’s too late now, we’ll just enjoy them as long as we can.

What goes into your decision to use traditional plastic vs. biodegradable plastic for certain rows. If it was cost, I imagine you would only use one type. Is one better than the other for certain crops? Biodegradable seem like less maintenance, which is a cost. Just wondering the different uses for each type. Thx.
@wishwellfarms
@wishwellfarms Ай бұрын
Yes, good question. Bio is much more expensive, almost double, but it eliminates all the labor of pulling it up and disposing of it which is a horrible job that no one likes. The only problem with bio is that is does start to break down during the season just a little so I don't like to put it long season crops (crops that get harvested all season) like tomatoes and peppers on it, so we put them on conventional plastic. Crops like cuke, zuke, melons the get multiple plantings and only last a few weeks are perfect for the bio plastic. Hope that answers your question.

side shoots are called broccolini here locally and sells for more than broccoli Broc goes for 2.50 to 4.50 pkg the broccolini goes for $4 bunch..mind you we do not get snow here and we can grow greenhouses year round as no frost gets cold enough to freeze pipes or hoses our average mean is 13C 55.4F
@wishwellfarms
@wishwellfarms Ай бұрын
Interesting. All my seed catalogs have broccolini as a completely separate cultivar of regular broccoli and the entire plant grows as broccolini shoots. We normally pick all those shoots and sell them in quart containers, just didn’t happen this year.

If you get a chance make broccoli alfredo one of my favorites. 3 Days ago I was bush hogging my last corn field scared up a lame 5pt mule buck called DOW they issued me a tag over the phone so freezer is full for winter. Kristin...we've been together for 31 years. She was instramental in helping me start the produce farm in the late '90's, then we started having kids in 2001 and she became a fulltime homemaker (domestic godess) She wants nothing to do with youtube. You've already seen Joel, Jake and Gavin from time to time...I will try to show more of my family over the winter.
