The Saxons (Latin: Saxones, German: Sachsen, Old English: Seaxan, Old Saxon: Sahson, Low German: Sassen, Dutch: Saksen) were a group of early Germanic peoples whose name was given in the early Middle Ages to a large country (Old Saxony, Latin: Saxonia) near the North Sea coast of northern Germania, what is now Germany. In the late Roman Empire, the name was used to refer to Germanic coastal raiders, and also as a word something like the later "Viking". Their origins appear to be mainly somewhere in or near the above-mentioned German North Sea coast where they are found later, in Carolingian times. In Merovingian times, continental Saxons had also been associated with the activity and settlements on the coast of what later became Normandy. Their precise origins are uncertain, and they are sometimes described as fighting inland, coming into conflict with the Franks and Thuringians. There is possibly a single classical reference to a smaller homeland of an early Saxon tribe, but its interpretation is disputed. According to this proposal, the Saxons' earliest area of settlement is believed to have been Northern Albingia. This general area is close to the probable homeland of the Angles.

In contrast, the British "Saxons", today referred to in English as Anglo-Saxons, became a single nation bringing together Germanic peoples (Frisian, Jutish, Anglish (whence "English")) with a small part of the vanquished Romanized Britons, establishing long-lasting post-Roman kingdoms equivalent to those formed by the Franks on the continent. Their earliest weapons and clothing south of the Thames were based on late Roman military fashions, but later immigrants north of the Thames showed a stronger North German influence. The term "Anglo-Saxon", combining the names of the Angles and the Saxons, came into use by the 8th century (for example Paul the Deacon) to distinguish the Germanic inhabitants of Britain from continental Saxons (referred to in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle as Ealdseaxe, 'old Saxons'), but both the Saxons of Britain and those of Old Saxony (Northern Germany) continued to be referred to as 'Saxons' in an indiscriminate manner, especially in the languages of Britain and Ireland.
While the English Saxons were no longer raiders, the political history of the continental Saxons is unclear until the time of the conflict between their semi-legendary hero Widukind and the Frankish emperor Charlemagne. While the continental Saxons are no longer a distinctive ethnic group or country, their name lives on in the names of several regions and states of Germany, including Lower Saxony (which includes central parts of the original Saxon homeland known as Old Saxony), Saxony in Upper Saxony, as well as Saxony-Anhalt (which includes Old, Lower and Upper Saxon regions).

@@the98themperoroftheholybri33 The precious title "Duke of Saxony" was inherited to other aristocratic families of other territories. This title was connected to being Prince elector, which was one of seven or nine members of the electoral college that elected the German emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Indeed, the emperor was elected and not automically passed to the son. In order to be elected as future emperor the candidate had to do some arrangements or compromises with the members of the electoral college. That's was the reason why the rulers of modern Saxony stuck to the title and the name despite having little to do with the original Saxon crowd or regions.

They were one of the only kingdoms that would resist him and give him problems despite being very small in comparison (besides the whole thing with his brothers and mother) So when Charlemagne defeated them he killed a staggering amount of the population including women and children and forced the rest to disperse.

@@BBeowulf He did kill the nobelity but not really the whole population. You must know in that time to kill all the farmers is not a good idea if you will win land. He also set up some saxons like Widukind in the end to govern this lands with tribute paid to the franks. No they not went to england because they were allys of the franks in that time and christian. If so they went to the Danes or the Wends. But mostly there is not any evidence that a great migration in the region followed afte the saxon wars from the franks or other people. If so the only change in culture was in the nobelity.

This is one of the most comprehensive Saxon histories available on KZbin right now, it seems. Thank you so much for this. I can add; there is a 15th century manuscript which states that the founding Saxons came with Alexander the Great. The Saxons would go on to control the largest tribal duchy by area. My interest in the matter is that I bear a Saxon surname, from a man who looks Armenian. The Normans ultimately descended from the Danes, who dwelt just north of AngleSaxony. I wonder what enmity existed between them that would lead the Normans to overthrow the Anglo-Saxons of Angland so utterly? To this day, people with Norman surnames statistically enjoy greater status and shares of wealth, accompanied by lower suicide and addiction rates, in England. The Saxons, Angles, Frisians, and Danes fought heartily against the Frankish wave of conquest. The Danes even managed to preserve their autonomy. Beowulf the anglosaxon hero killed Grendel for a Danish lord. What a story

in the end it is all about power and money maybe not so much that they were enemies in that way, the Danish historian Saxo who wrote the history of the Danes between 1160-1200 AC wrote the Angles, Jutes, Teutons and Danes were brothers, dna test show Anglo-Saxon dna is very similar to modern day Danes and Dutch and indistinghuable to Danish Viking dna , just like Saxo wrote they were brothers

@@veronicajensen7690 I believe it. I found some interesting things since then. The kimmerians from the black sea became the Cimbri, who migrated to the land of the Danes after 300bc. Josephus says the Cimbri are Israelites..! The white amazigh in south Africa are classified as an indigenous people. They were there long before the vandals. An ancient Greek historian who's name eludes me says the amazons had an empire that extended from the black sea into northern Africa. Now archeologists think the amazons were a real people, centered in modern Ukraine. That's where the kimmeroi lived. They were chased out by the Scythians. All of the depictions left of themselves. the Scythians look just like Nordic people; and viking art looks like a progression of the Scythian animal style. Pliny the elder wrote briefly on blonde haired blue eyed traders on the west coast of China. The dragon Fafnir in Volsung saga sounds just like the Chinese dragon Marco polo talks about. And the parallels between old Norse beliefs recorded in Eddas, and Hindu beliefs recorded in vedas, are alarming I just got my nose broken at a punk show by someone who looked like a Dane.. it doesn't matter that we are brothers 😭
