He showed "The Gaze" , perhaps one of the most stunning. photographs ever taken. One needs to remember that photography was in its infancy and yet, the artistry is clearly there. This one photo shows you how much she and the photographer worked in tandem to create a new language of this very new art form. They would worked tirelessly on creating a document that has yet to be surpassed.

A story indeed. As someone who has been termed "beautiful " from childhood, I can say it has its perks but my God, the expectations are demonic. I remember every time I had an idea or a hobby, the stares and comments I'd get from family was crushing. The expectation to "use" the beauty to bring us wealth and glory was always there. I remember one time, a woman called me a fool for coming 2nd in a beauty paegent which i never wanted to participate in. That memory hurts me cos i was so young and couldnt retaliate. I was expected to use it to get favours for myself and others. This isn't entirely a bad thing because it's easy to sound like an ingrate for saying these BUT the thing no one tells you is that, BEAUTY HAS A TIME WINDOW. If you are lucky, you get 10 years, max! After that, what next? I wasnt prepared for anything else. The only thing I mastered was WAITING for the next opportunity. Beauty opens powerful doors and I've walked through some of them myself. The thing no one tells you is how to keep those doors open while sitting there like an art exhibition. Many beautiful women were taught to seize but many were taught to just sit. My final words: There's always a window, whatever gift you have, seize the time and make sure you live your own dreams
@ariella444415 күн бұрын
There are many downsides for being beautiful. You will always be envied and hated by so many jealous women. I was also hated by so many women, including my older sister. Each of them had a mission to accomplish, which was to make my life as miserable as possible. That’s exactly what happened to me. Instead of enjoying my life as a beautiful girl, I was always envied and hated with a passion and hurt by so many evil & jealous women, and my life was a total misery bc of them. I wish that I was never beautiful. Maybe my life would’ve been a happier one if I looked average or hideous!

I think I have a 'cabinet photo' of her. It's of her sitting side on, holding a cardboard photo frame, obscuring her face except for the oval cutout where the photo would go. She stares at the camera through the oval cutout. She was quite striking with grey wisps of hair. I very artistic photo, which was the reason I bought it. I could very well be wrong on that, and I often am!

So good I subbed! Very timely content, as I've just finished watching the fabulous series The Empress on Netflix. I wasn't familiar with this countess...fascinating. You referred to her as the first supermodel but I was thinking, "What a drama queen!" Women who share these traits may be written off by some as self-centered trivialists. They are, however, inextrixably complex, compelling, and frustrating (sometimes, all at once). I believe we have such a dramatic personality in our midst today, cosplaying as a duchess. The personality tracks; just dress her in turn-of-the-century fashion and style and tell the story again, 21st century style.

On one of the photograps, she posed with stars in her hair and on her dress, similar to Empress Sisi. In fact, I see similarities in their life. A failed marriage, being obsessed with their appearance, maybe even to the point of being a narcissist, losing their sons, didn´t get over the loss of their famous looks in later life and withdrawing from the eyes of socielty, having mental issues and erratic behaviour. Thanks for another fascinating biography, Forgotten Lives.

Do you ever think about the fact that you have real ancestors that lived in those times? In the 15th century? The 16th and 17th? Mom's family left Holland in 1654. Dad's mom walked beside a covered wagon from eastern Dakota territory to the mines of western Montana territory as a child in the 1880s ot 90s. Mom's folks were married in 1903. Her father's family owned the town bank and paid off depositors when the depression hit. My mother had to leave the big house in town for the farm house with no indoor plumbing and it was quite a blow to her adolescent confidence. I have eras that fascinate me, seeing perhaps how my ancestors liived or experienced life. I guess it makes those eras seem a little more REAL to me. Josiah B. brought seven sons and their families to the New World. Seeing the sailing ships in the first minute of this video triggered some thoughts of them crossing the Atlantic so long ago.

@MissAyame8916 күн бұрын
Whenever i hear beautiful titled and went crazy i immediately question the validity of the crazy part. Thru-ought history beautiful powerful woman where often painted that way to take there power and wealth. “Her mental health suffered after her mother passed”. Um what was she supposed to be doing? Laughing and going to party’s. “As she got older she was a recluse” and that proves mental instability how? As you get older you stop going to party’s and clubs and such. Priority’s shift. Health naturally declines. If you aren’t well you’re not going to willingly go out and cause more pain and rumors if others see you unwell. That would be grounds to strip her of her wealth and power. There was mourning periods during that time where you were considered mentally unstable if you didn’t adhere to them. 🤷🏻♀️ she even did the photos again everyone loved her for before and that also brought criticism. no matter what she did she was vilified as often how older woman of wealth where treated. Its sad.

Being a recluse does not automatically equate to mental instability. Early Gossip Commentaries overly dramaticized women of elite status as having various Idiosyncrasies, relative to their decisions to withdraw from public/social life. Likely insecure due to where they and/or others placed so much value upon physical Appearance and Money, it would naturally be the 1st consideration. However, I would say that there were far more that chose to withdraw for personal desire than any mental health afflictions. Beth Bartlett Sociologist/Behavioralist and Historian
