I agree. If Vladdy could consistently put up numbers like 2021 then I would consider him a franchise player, without a doubt. Let’s hope for a bounce back this year.

Hitting over .1000ops every season is super rare. That 2021 season was one of the best jays season in history. Bautista had 2 of those, Delgado had only 2, Olerud had 1, Donaldson's MVP season he didn't even hit .1000 ops. That said, Vlad has more of those in his for sure and a kid with his skill and talent shouldn't be hitting under .800 ops like last season. If he gets back to taking the ball to right field for hits and HRs, I think that's a sign he's back. He hit a ton of OPPOS in 2021 and hits also that way, something he barely did last season, especially oppo HRs. I think he had 2-3 only.

Blue Jays were sending Vlady a message by taking him to arbitration. It wasn't about the money. Jays were saying to Vlady that he hasn't been holding his end up and that more is expected of him. I hope Vlady rises to the challenge. I agree with management.

Hope he has a good year and we move him next off season for a good return. Personally I rather have BO. Shortstops don’t grow on trees and many players from other positions have transitioned into first baseman with good bats. Vlad is already at 20m per year it will cost close to 30m to sign long term…for a team who doesn’t like to spend over the second luxury tax will be hard for them.

I think Vlad wants to go and I bet if and when he does, he will take right off. Vladdy doesn't hit the best at Rogers for some reason, especially since they're renovated it last season. Took him nearly 20 home games to hit a HR. When he had 6-7 on the road in same span.

I heard a great argument on this recently... If the Jays had just given in and moved up to Vladdy's asking, then it would have sent and even WORSE message to him and his agent. The Jays did their due diligence (I hope) and offered what they felt was far, based on all the data they had. There was a gap of $2M. Sure, that's a fair bit. And pretty normal-ish for the biz. So what if TO just said "fine, here's the $19.9M". Wouldn't that just "prove" that they were trying to "lowball" him? If was so easy to move up and agree to Vladdy's terms (instead of going to arb) - I bet it would leave a worse taste in his mouth. Interesting logic, no?

The Jays have a file and trial approach. Once they file a number, they won't talk contract unless it's an extension. This is more a result of a policy and an inability(unwillingness) to put together a 2 year If they signed him for 2 years, then they lose their chance to force him to the negotiation table one more time.

Players do tend to have good years and put up numbers the year of hitting the market. Bellinger, Soler, Turner, even Chapman was trying to ramp it up at the end of the season. $19.9 million yr. / 162 games = $122,800 per game / 4 = $ 30,700 per at bat. Yikes!! All that money in his wallet explains why he is only half way down the first base line when he gets thrown out. Also investing some of that "hard earned" money in a good pair of prescription glasses would be a great idea. It would help with his depth perception. Nothing more embarrassing than admiring a deep fly ball from the batter's box only to realize that ooppss1 it's not going over the fence so I better start running now. At the crack of the bat, V.G. Jr should sprint out the box the same way Usain Bolt explodes out of the starting blocks when the pistol goes off. Kudos to Dalton Varsho for setting an example that should be followed by all.

A bit of role reversal here. What's to say that Bo and Vlad aren't equally putting management in the hot seat to improve the team with a better cast or they walk to a contending team. What's to say that in a year or 2 they will want to stay? That said, maybe now is a good time to see what you can get for them? It's good to look at all the options before they disappear.

I'm sure they will do what is in their best interest just like management will do the same. Being franchise players was an expectation put on them. Maybe Bo and Vlad are the 2 "franchise" ticket sellers and the rest of the roster doesn't matter. In that scenario these guys have to make a decision for themselves. @@tomdinder2109the fact that the FO is failing at adding impact bats around them to protect them in the line up , making them more productive is enough for them to both want to walk and test FA. There is nothing scary about this situation, or baseball in general. Mildly concerning? For the worriers maybe. Free agency is the norm now, which sucks in my opinion insofar as rosters are a turnstile - in terms of fans rooting for the home team. Very few players are truly members of the community anymore, that's ancient history. Sign of the times - the use of "scary". Some things in life are scary. The pending free agent status of a rich 20-something year old baseball player with 2 years remaining on his contract is not. Neither is climate change, or Donald Trump, or human rights issues in North America, or covid. You sound like the mainstream media with the scary talk. Ultimately, Vladdy - and I'm a fan - will decide where he wants to play. And this arbitration will have nothing to do with it. If Guerrero feels "insulted" by this process, I think that's being a bit immature and he needs to look in the mirror. His stats last year were mediocre at best. He had one superstar year. Over the past 2 years, no chance. For your alleged biggest threat and a 1B, there were tons of players more productive. As his free agency approaches, we'll see if his stats improve. If he goes to play in sunnier climes which I suspect he will, good for him. The Jays will use the cash he'd cost to get a replacement and move forward. I think both Lourdes Gurriel Jr and Teoscar Hernandez had better years last year than he did.

Is it a crazy idea to trade Vlad Jr? Okay okay hear me out He is my fav player on the Jays BUT purely from a winning perspective...say he has a big year in 2024 and the Jays fail to make it deep into the postseason again. It would seem Vladdy is an up-and-down year type player, whereas Bichette is the consistent player albeit with a much lower ceiling... The other key thing is that the Jays are clearly willing to spend big in free agency. I'm not sure if Soto wants to play in Canada. But say you can get a big free agent, the same caliber as Guerrero. AND you can trade Guerrero for great prospects. AND you can extend Bichette. Is that not better, purely from a winning perspective, than retaining Bichette and Guerrero (which means theyll have less to spend in free agency)?
