Actually, I'm just now eating my words. I spent some more time with this monster and suddenly something clicked. All of a sudden I have no problems flying it, it's very much like learning how to ride a bicycle when you were a kid. It's not a gradual thing, it happens suddenly. One day you keep falling over and next day you catch the balance idea and suddenly you're off to the races. That's how this helicopter is. For those who have problems controlling it - stay with it, once you get it, it is sooo worth it! The secret is you have to EXACTLY match every little movement of the helicopter with your cyclic and rudder, but - in reverse - and as it happens. It becomes second nature very fast and it becomes a very sweet flyer. It used to collect dust in my hangar, but not anymore. Don't give up, folks, trust me, it works!

My 300CBi with two tanks (64us gal, 240L) will give a theoretical max endurance of 6hours at average 65knts and max range of 390Nm or 450Satute miles My actual average fuel burn at 65nts over last ten years is 6.1nm\gal or 7.0 Statm\gal or 3km/L However with 240L fuel on board the CBi model is essentially a single seat machine, hence rarely fly with more than 30 gallons two-up or 15 gallons three-up at coast. A great little machine to fly if you're not in a hurry.

I understand that this thing is incredibly hard to control, which in a way makes it such a good trainer. When you can fly this, you can fly anything...!

@@normg2242 What so you think is so difficult about flying it? I found it quite docile for a helicopter.
@normg2242 Жыл бұрын
@Tom-zs6bb ... at least on my computer (with perfectly linear expo) you can't let the movements of the helicopter get away on you. Once you do, it becomes uncontrollable. But if you stay on top of it and pay attention, it becomes the easiest helicopter to control. There is even a real-life video of a guy who didn't know that and flew if for the first time. He totally lost control and wrecked it.

@@normg2242 Norm, a home flight sim bears little resemblance to an actual aircraft. I did my commercial rating in a 300 variant many years ago and it flew quite nicely and, yes, quite easily.

Another good thing about it is you decide when to get the rotor going. Much easier start ups that way and less strain on the engine.

"S300" is the Sikorsky designation for the ownership/ production at that time. 300C, 300CB, and 300CBi indicate Schweizer manufacturer. Awesome handling, comfort, ease of inspection, and proven systems would be the main selling points. The engine, not being turbo-charged like some Enstrom's, may lend to greater life and reliability. The Cabri G2 is technologically advanced but WAY too small for full sized adults, IMHO. I wouldn't want to spend much time in that ship, with a passenger at least. The Enstrom's rotor system is a gem and will quickly inspire confidence while flight training. Within minutes of my first flight in an F-28, I was amazed at how well she flew and felt in hand. The 300 may not be the sleekest, or prettiest ship, but it will execute the training mission and utility mission profiles nicely. There's plenty of room and it's easy to get along with. I'm glad I did the majority of my training in the 300C, back in the day (1990's). Too bad it is out of production and parts availability may be an issue.

@@RelativeMotionCC I think you are about right. 225 litres of fuel according to your table, and a max of 45 litres per hour at 250g/kwh for 140KW. comes to 5 hours. 225g/kwh at 115kw comes to about 6.75hours. That's a lot of fuel for a small helicopter. The range or fuel in your table must not be correct, with cruise speed of 100mph that should be about 700 miles range then.
@RelativeMotionCC3 жыл бұрын
@@chippyjohn1 Its been a min. now since I made that first table but it looks like your right, the range should be higher. I think we can all agree though that 5-7 hours of flight time in this is going to be a looong time lol

@@RelativeMotionCC I have over 3000 hours in the 300 series. Hands down, my favorite piston helicopter. Pretty close on the fuel burn rates. Depends on load and weather factors as well. I was flying 9 hours a day on fiber optic cable patrol before that job ended. It takes a toll on the body but is so much fun to fly. Bonus: you can land anywhere and take a break at any time. :D I landed at a lot of restaurants and small open fields to wait out weather over the years. A well rigged 300 is a dream to fly.

Is the Schweitzer the same as the Hiller helicopter? The Hughes 500 C and D have a different manufacturer now and are called by another name. Is this true? Thanks for your featured helicopters, very satisfying and educational.
@gmp2034 ай бұрын
No. Not same as Hiller. This helicopter was originally manufactured by Hughes tool company in Culver City California. Originally a two seater called the Hughes 200 and then the Hughes 300 3 seater. Conduction started in the early 60s late 50s. The Hughes 500 is the five seater turbine engine. Hughes was purchased by McDonald Douglas who still makes the MD 500. Schweitzer makes the 300

I only recently learnt that the Pilot in Command is usually on the right side of a helicopter, it seemed intuitive to me. Just like a Right hand drive car, you have your right hand on the steering wheel ans left on the gear stick, or hand brake. Must be a little harder learning to fly a helicopter coming from a wrong hand drive car.
