The phrase “without this video i wouldnt be able to finish my chemisty assingment. you guys teach way better than my science teacher lol” is such a weak mindset. You are ok with what happened, losing, imperfection of a craft. When you stop getting angry after losing, you’ve lost twice. There’s always something to learn, and always room for improvement, never settle.

There's a key step that is not explained here, which is that after heating the can on the stove, the can is turned upside down and EMPTIED OF HOT WATER. This gives some of the hot air (water vapour) inside the can a chance to escape, which means the pressure inside the can equals the pressure outside the can before it's put in the water. This is important! When the can is put in the water, the opening of the can is covered by the water and a VACUUM is created. This vacuum means that when the water vapour inside the can cools and shrinks, the pressure inside the can is suddenly weaker than the pressure outside the can, and that's why the can is crushed. If the air pressure inside the can is greater than the air pressure outside the can when the can is placed in the water, then cooling the water vapour inside the can would result in merely making the air pressure inside the can the same as the air pressure outside the can, and no crushing would occur.

Just watched a video talking about why the pipes of the Titanic collapsed, and guy was saying it was exactly this concept but on a much larger scale. The superheated thin metal cylinders touched the freezing arctic waters and snapped the support wires due to air pressure, before finally toppling over into the ocean. Maybe that was one of the many loud metallic booms they described hearing, the pressure reaction.

Video is entertaining and I think my high school chemistry students would enjoy watching it, but part of your explanation is wrong and I'm hesitant to use an incorrect video in my classroom. Your can is open on the top while it is being heated. Therefore, the pressure inside the can IS NOT increasing as you modeled. The water & water vapor inside the can is being heated so the particles move faster and "spread out" so they actually leave through the opening in the top of the can. As long as it's open, the pressure inside and outside of the can will be equal. Then, it's only the decreasing pressure inside the can that causes the outside pressure to crush it.

That was a very helpful video. The reason I seeked it out originally was because I currently have an exhaust leak underneath my car and something very weird is happening that I figured this video would somehow be able to help me out with. In the mornings when I drive to work and it is 30° outside, I have the heat on in the cab of the car and I smell zero exhaust. On the way home it is 60° outside so the inside of my car is the same temperature as the outside and fumes are so strong I can hardly breathe. Why is it that the exhaust does not come into the cab in the morning and yet it does in the afternoon? Is it because the molecules inside the cabin are very excited and have more pressure than the outside environment which is keeping the exhaust from coming in?
@ericc365 Жыл бұрын
Probably you’re just pressurizing the cabin with the heater fan. Has nothing to do with molecular excitement.
