NOTE FROM TED: Please do not look to this talk as a substitute for medical advice. The health effects of breast implants remain an emerging field of study. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t...
Dr. Laura Miles discusses the vague entity of breast implant illness. This has been sparked by the recent recall of many of Allergans implants as they link them to a specific type of cancer. For many years, women have suffered a multitude of symptoms that they feel are related to their implants but have been brushed aside by the medical community. This historic recall has opened the door that these issues are not only legitimate but that more research and investigation needs to take place. In the meantime, women who suspect they have breast implant illness need a guideline on how to figure out if their symptoms are related to their implants. Data and case reports of illnesses published that will be the basis of this discussion. Dr. Laura Miles graduated with honors from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Societies in undergraduate and medical school, respectively. She completed her internship and residency through the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.
Originally board certified in Ophthalmology, Dr. Miles’ personal journey toward healthy living led her into training with the Anti-aging and Regenerative Medical Society. This special training resulted in yet another board certification, this one by the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine board. Her diverse background makes for a unique approach in managing and maintaining a healthy life. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Cosmetic surgeons will totally deny you are getting sick from your implants. In fact the surgeon will act as though you're not sick at all. My surgeon offered to sell me new replacements. One of the implants had ruptured. He had no interest in how I felt health wise. I had an explant because I was ill from the implants. I'm not sure how to check my health to see if the problem is out of my body totally. Tests and treatments don't seem to be offered specifically for implant illness. Some doctors don't believe in it. My advice is don't get implants. Thank you for this Ted Talk that needs even more research and acknowledgement.

Truth be told... And with the exception of just a few, for the most part, the medical community as a whole find the "implications" that come with accepting, that no implant is safe. So, of course, cosmetic surgeons are in denial. I mean, imagin having to contend with that the cost and effort it takes to get through med school plus specialty training. And then be confronted with the undeniable facts of the damage they cause by continuing to implant women.

I had my implants removed 3 years ago. A year after receiving my implants, I started noticing the intense fatigue, alcohol intolerance, liver disfunction, memory loss, anxiety, and depression. This is only a few issues I've developed. After having the implants removed, I had a genetics test done and found out that I have MTHFR gene mutation which makes it difficult for my liver to rid itself of toxins and metals. So, it wasn't surprising that I had extremely high levels of heavy metals in my system due to my implants. I am truly afraid of what this might mean for my health in the future.

I had a toxin overload, 3 major surgeries within 5 months, and had to wait 5 months to get well enough to explant. The hospital gave me with pseudomonas aeriginosa as a nice gift. it sounds like you had your implants replaced after nine years and then with new implants in for only 3 months, you got much worse. But if they developed capsules, then you must have had the new ones in for a while, right. Our values in society are so inverted. @@janerimer6475 that is so enlightening that the body could create a capsule in 3 months. The body is amazing. I was a caregiver for a 99 year old woman and as I was getting her healthier with organic fresh fruit and vegetables, her body ejected her pacemaker. The body just pushed out her pacemaker over the course of weeks out through a hole it made. The pacemaker had been in there for years. She wasn't even using the pacemaker anymore so the body probably knew it had to go. Also the pacemaker was the source of an infection from the biofilm so the body again was protecting itself by pushing it out. Sadly her daughter administered morphine before I could continue the natural healing with her.

Your not missing anything at Mayo. My wife and I went there a few years back. It felt like the Mall of America in health care. Not impressed. They are quite full of themselves. All kinds of tests. No talk about BII. I was unaware of BII back then. They came up with the same fibromyalgia bull. So here I am with a sick wife who hears nothing from the experts. Just her husband who looked it up on the internet, and she gets quite agitated when I try to talk about it. This has been frustrating for me to say the least.

Calcification around implants here. My surgeon says can only remove top of capsule because it is too much risk to remove the bottom one due to possible damage to bone and other parts adjacent to the area. Anyone else had this answer? Anyone else that had explant done had only the implants removed or always the capsule as well? Any answers are appreciated.

An experienced surgeon will be able to perform an en bloc removal of the implant and the capsule , so please find one of that does. Especially when you have calcification & encapsulation.

Hi, yes, just depends your insurance. Most at this moment are covering the total or some of the surgery. You can consult with your doctor/specialist and help you with a letter regarding the surgery for medically necessary.

I had a severe reaction to a copper IUD 2 years into having it in my body. I can honestly say I know what it feels like to be poisoned and I was so afraid I would kill myself. I was 100% better 48 hours after having it out. I can totally believe that implants could cause reactions too...

here's my little rant. as an acupuncturist, I found that people with piercings like in their belly button also have health issues, and I thought it was just from the irritation on the acupoint, but I also realize it has to do with the metal itself microleeching., kind of like the copper affecting you. I also found that people with really large tattoos heal much slower than non-tattooed people. I read that the rich colors can have heavy metals, such as the red ink containing cinnabar. Inks are not regulated.

What about leaving the scar tissue/capsule and taking the impant out? It is twice as expensive to have an en bloc/ capsulectomy but is it necessary?
@valerieann2751
@valerieann2751 Жыл бұрын
According to the plastic surgeon that I consulted, he says if you are concerned about BII, then you must get the capsulectomy or it really won’t solve the problem. Yes it is very expensive, which is why I haven’t explanted yet. I can’t afford it . I so wish insurance would cover at least some of it since it is leading to an illness.

I’m wondering if the same thing can happen with dermal fillers? Even thought they are made from hyaluronic acid the body could still see it as a foreign object. I’ve had them done for around 4 years now and have similar symptoms like insomnia, tiredness, brain fog, nausea and lack of energy getting worse during that time.

Thanks for sharing. I have a hernia mesh after my surgery in 2018. Today I’m so sick I can barely work, workout, and I have so many sensitivities. Only after investigation we realise the brand and type of mesh is 3D printed plastic that’s been disputed in many many legal cases globally for causing issues. Looking at getting it removed now.

Implants can send the immune system into overdrive. Implants raise histamine production levels in the body. Implants are viewed by the body as an allergen. Studies are showing this now.
