I have, interestingly, seen a few discussions regarding how the popular understanding of MAD is... not entirely accurate. A _lot_ of the fear of Global Annihilation was really just fear-mongering on the part of the military-industrial complex. Basically, MAD was never about targeting random cities and wiping out civilian populations. It was specifically about hitting the other side's missiles and military targets. Not even... infrastructure in general. Why? Because A.) We never had anywhere close to the nuclear arsenal required to "wipe out all life" and B.) because after you've spent all your nukes... you're defenceless. Conventional military action is still possible. In fact, you don't even fire all your nukes. Whatever survives the first wave then becomes your bargaining chips to try to force negotiations and to defend yourself against invasion if they fail. Because nuclear exchange was never actually about Wiping Their Civilization Off The Map, everybody who lives (and it will be a lot of people, with guns and tanks and bombs included) will be able to look at the aftermath and, say, go "holy shit you targeted civilians like a monster, now that your deterrent is gone we're going to rightfully fuck you up".
@mikoto7693
@mikoto7693 2 жыл бұрын
I cling to the logic that nuclear war can’t happen because it’s impossible to wipe out the enemy total nuclear weapons stockpile because most of them are kept aboard stealth subs. Launching nukes absolutely will fuck up both sides. It a terrible fucking idea.

These videos are almost like therapy to me. Putting extremely terrifying situations in a different light by explaining the science behind them. I dunno why understanding something scares me yet comforts me. I guess it's just better than thinking we could all die at any moment. Which we could anyways, not just from nukes. We could slip on a banana peel and crack our head open, I guess. It's happened.

also you turned a diameter of 25 miles into 25 square miles without any kind of conversion. a circle with a diameter of 25 miles has an area of approximately 176.71 miles. this makes your answer off by at least an order of magnitude on its own and its even worse if that 25 miles was a radius.

2:55 Well... this screws up the whole "what if Undertale happened, but when they got to the surface humanity already blew themselves up" idea I'd been thinking about (as for why Frisk would be there... well, let's just say the protagonist wouldn't be FROM that universe)... I may play fast and loose with these sorts of laws when they're based on extranormal energies (because we don't know how they work), but Undertale's humanity would be essentially the same tech level and type as US, and thus would nowhere NEAR outstrip current stockpile by that much! Closest I could get would be... huh. A Fallout/Undertale crossover... wonder if anyone's made a good one of those...

+ShoddyCast the rest of the world may be worse off then you put in this vid. This would be mainly not only the nuclear winter which would cause a starvation to wipe out a lot of people. Also, there would be a large amount of people in these countries which suddenly have no resources coming from America, China, Europe, and no oil coming out of the middle east. Mass riots would more then likely ensue along with the previously mentioned starvation.

@riccardos2955
@riccardos2955 5 жыл бұрын
Yeaah but they are 125kt each, Also the warhead split in space and fall in to theyr Targets as indipendent bombs. He counted them when he spoke about 66k nukes in the world. What he did not account for is that 80% of the 66k bombs we had 1980s where to big or to bulky to be strapped on rockets and Bombers where not developed enouigh to have a realistic chance ever dropping its payload in cause of a war. Also half of the bombs to that time where from the 50s and to old to be used. Paranoia for nothing literally, in case of Nuclear War with China, Russia and the US you would not see more then 1000 Warheads flying. Reloading is impossible since the first nukes will cut down electricity, communication and Radar (EMP'S). Its like a One shot gun where you know you cant reload anymore. Different story in a Conventional War where ,,Tactical,, Nukes will be used (not more yeld then 10kt). A 750kt Nuke is not Tactical its clearly a Strategical Device.

Nuclear winter wouldn't be a problem in the Fallout series. I had heard that 12 nukes launched in the same day would kill the entire planet due to nuclear winter, but to cause nuclear winter, you would need the dust from the blast to reach into the troposphere (70,000 feet); only a megaton bomb would be able to achieve this. As you stated earlier, the Fallout bombs are from 200-750 kilotons, so no nuclear winter. Other countries near blast areas would deal with dust storms and radioactive rain for around a month, then it would stop (other than radiation in the soil which stays around much longer).
@tedcook9621
@tedcook9621 4 жыл бұрын
It's just a thought, but, NOT all those bombs have to be limited to 750 Ktonnes. You can still haz megaton range city burners and such.

So I'm late to the party, but to add to the conversation I had a class in college about nuking the world (Potential Ecological Effects of Nuclear War). One exercise we had as homework was to take an estimate of the Soviet nuclear arsenal and a list of US cities in order of population density. Our goal was to maximize civilian casualties. The quick summary was that you ran out of good targets way before you ran out of nukes. So yes, we once had the capacity to totally blow it all up.

One other factor that wasn't talked about when mentioning how countries not directly hit could survive is that those countries would probably fall apart anyway. Think about it. The global economy or what was left of it would completely disintegrate as the richest and most powerful countries in the world would effectively disappear. Trade dries up and foreign currency would be effectively useless as the countries the currency belongs to would not exist (no US dollar without the US). Furthermore, the US and Europe produce the largest amounts of the world's food with Ukraine, France, and the Great Plains being the most fertile regions in the world and in direct line of the nuclear devastation. All of a sudden, the most fertile lands in the world become irradiated or simply stop growing with no government to manage it. Finally, the surviving countries would not only have to deal with fallout spilling over into their land but also probably the world's largest refugee crises. The amount of people fleeing into these countries would make countries like China and the US buckle even if they were at their primes. I can't imagine countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo having a prayer of taking care of refugees of that magnitude. Pretty much I predict the Fallout world is something like most of the Northern hemisphere is an irradiated mess including the Middle East and India while what's left fell apart in the 30 to 40 years after the event and now those areas (Africa, South America, Australia, etc) are not irradiated but dens of anarchy nonetheless

No they were not. The Little Boy nuke wasn't even tested to work. The scientists that made it was so sure it will work it was sent right from the drawing board to the factory. The bomb that was tested was the implosion device since that was a completely untested concept. So new that the Russians didn't even have a word for "implosion". Nukes were always well understood of what they will do before one was ever created. You might mean that radiation was discovered by accident, but those two are not the same things.

I guess aside from USA and China, the worst effect would be felt in India. - If reunited with rest of former Indian territories (i.e. entire South Asia), it has a population larger than China. This is true in real world as well, albeit no reunification yet. - Since in Fallout world, people and governments didn't radically change from 1960s world...we can assume India retains its heavy diplomatic isolationism and neutrality policies of they '60s. - But at the same time, India has nukes, more sophisticated than the ones in China during Cold War due to Indian scientists having a head start. Which is why, even though it isn't mentioned, India is VERY likely a major participant in the Great War. Even if southern Africa has returned to normal life, India most likely won't since it too would face heavy nuke barrage. - Another factor is that India has historically been wealthier than China (although both of them controlled more than 50% of the world economy before 19th century), and we can assume that India with its industrialist policies of the '50s and '60s has slowly rebuilt its wealth and GDP back to controlling a big share of world economy. They would certainly have lots of nukes, on par with both major participants. - In lore, USA had Vault-Tec building Vaults. China likely had a network of bunkers in all major cities that functioned similarly, given that they built a few in real life during the Cold War. India in real life did not have any such thing since there was no threat of nuclear attack aside from some incidents. Given the massive, dense cities, even smaller nukes can kill millions of people within India, just like coastal China. - Radiation winds will stay within India once they form, since India is bound by all sides from mountains. So while radiation levels lowered within 15 years of the Great War in USA, in India the high-level radiations would stay for almost 40-50 years. And cause India to become a Ghoul/Zombieland. - Those who do survive would die of famine, as food production in India (despite being enormous in scale) depends on a very intricate natural and environmental balance. Assuming everything turned into desert wasteland after the war, that means monsoon rains stopped and people can't grow anything other than simpler crops in their backyards. - We know that sea level rose and flooded lots of places after the war. That means the entire Gangetic Plain region of India, where high population is concentrated since bronze age, is below the sea level in Fallout. And people wouldn't be able to escape so fast, and most probably millions were drowned. All these factors combined plus a bunch more, means if there are any people left in India at all, they would either be Ghouls, ghosts or scraping for life in violent raids after taking over remaining military stockpiles. More agony than China.

I know this is not game related, but this question came to my mind: Could a nuclear winter be a solution against global warming if it gets to critical? I mean if we would drop the bombs where no people live and where the least possible amount of surrounding gets destroyed. Or at least less gets destroyed as to if the globe would be getting hotter. (PS I'm not a native speaker, so I hope that I chose the right words)

It would solve global warming the same way burning a house down gets rid of a mold problem. You kinda solve your problem, but where you live is just ash now. Nuclear winter does drop temperatures, but by putting clouds of radioactive ash into the atmosphere blocking the sun and dusting the land in toxic snow that makes the land itself hostile to life.
