Have you ever wondered how to combine colors effectively in flower arrangements?
In this video, we dive into the world of color theory and its application in creating stunning bouquets. From Sir Isaac Newton's invention of the color wheel to understanding primary, secondary, and tertiary colors, we explore the fundamentals of color theory. Examples from my winter tulip flower subscription bouquets are shown to demonstrate how even choosing the right varieties of specialty tulips can provide a "color experience" for your customers.

I think I will order a color wheel poster to have as a visual in my workshop! Love the term “value add” to describe the small experiences people can have with their bouquets. Thanks for a fun video to watch on this dreary morning!

I love the idea of ordering a color wheel as I frequently find myself googling it. Thanks for the kind words :)

Great video.. I am a artist by nature.. and nurture, first art in school.. then a hair stylist for 30 year.. the color wheel was and is important. I picked up painting last year. Mixing color I needed a color wheel. I do not struggle with color combos.. in bouquet making. Love mono as well. I love blue and yellow orange and orange and pink.. flowers.. a splash of burgundy. Apposing colors on the wheel as well. It's always good to have a refresher💜

Playing with color combinations is one of my favorite parts of flowers! One thing I love to do is look at other people's bouquets, and let the experience wash over me without analyzing. If I come across one that draws me in, then I stop and mentally analyze it color wise. Sometimes there are elements of a bouquet that I never would have included because I would have assumed they would clash-but somehow they work in the whole to make something beautiful and interesting.

Agreed! I usually don't struggle with color, but to your point, I love the concept of the color wheel because it encourages me to pair colors that I either don't like or I thought would clash but actually CAN work!

I always thought what you are calling analogous colors were complementary and what you are calling complementary colors were contrasting. As a wholesale grower, I always wished florist would use a standard color description like the PMS chart instead of names like Burgundy or Lilac. Maybe you could do a follow-up video on color names. Good job on the video!

Funnily, I thought the same until a couple of years ago when I saw a video on color theory. Thank you for the kind words :)

Ive always loved color and feel i have a knack in that area. Whether putting colors together in painting, or fabrics in quilting, i love it. I feel im another 2 years out to effectively grow for great color combo bouquets, still learning what i want to cut or increase, and when they flower, but thats been my goal from the start! Nature has the best color combos sometimes just within one petal, one leaf, one feather...her inspiration is everywhere! ❤

That's a really great point. Have you heard of @Floristsonfarms? I interviewed her last week and she actually talked about growing specific colors that can be versatile for a couple of palettes. I thought that was an interesting take. I'm always in awe of people who manage to make juicy, colorful bouquets with just a few ingredients that feel like they're so much more bc they grew the right colors and they all bloomed at the right time!

@@bareflowerfarm yes! I follow her- looking forward to watching your interview with her. This is my goal, which I think will also be a challenge & enjoyable experiment, bc either way, we'll still have pretty flowers to enjoy! And, it just might work!
