I have found my brain far more capable in my 40’s and 50’s than in my 20’s. One of the significant changes was that I was carb addicted for the bulk of my life, but fat adapted (keto) since my early 40’s. I find I can do much more, understand better, produce far better outcomes and not get stressed or as easily distracted. I can do things that I was incapable of when I was in my 20’s and 30’s. Maybe I’m just a late developer.

24 year old here. While I've been remiss with following Keto in the last few months, but I remember my mental faculties being greatly improved when I was fat-adapted. You wake up with more energy, sleep better, your energy remains constant throughout the day, and cravings drop off significantly. Likewise my inclinations towards anxiety and depression seem to be much better moderated with this diet. Massively improves my day to day life. Likewise if you're engaging in a 2/3/4/5 day fast, drinking only water w/ electrolytes added, the clarity is magnified even more. You can utterly dedicate yourself towards the days activities, knowing you don't need to stop for lunch breaks etc. I hope to regain my fat-adapted state shortly to assist me as I kick off my career as a Software Engineer.

I’m 27 and have been kept for a year in a half and feel much clearer. But honestly even before That my mind changed a lot around 21 22, after going through a high stress period of 2.5 years where I worked almost everyday and an average of 55 hours a week but 70 hours was not out of the ordinary (including side hustles) I reached my cliff and took me about a year to a year and a half to get part of my sanity back but now my mind was way more organized in order and never procrastinated. It’s like a change in mental technique. Everything I take on comes with ease and very efficient. Whether it was starting my own buisness, learning to edit video, weightlifting, learning to code and program cars like bmw and Mercedes and so on. I have noticed I am becoming a lot more introverted (which scared me but am now learning to accept it) where as I used to be the biggest extrovert I knew. But taking on this diet has helped with stress and thinking clearer and enjoying my meals, taking food in as an experience instead of just something you cram into ur body and go.

TBH, I feel more smart, more productive in my late 30s and now early 40s (I am 41 now) than in my 20s and early 30s. One of the reasons I can think of is I put a lot of effort into learning diverse topics. And now it has become kind of a habit to keep learning. I am guessing my neural wiring has changed for good.

Lex pointed to the problem i’ve always had with working memory and the idea that it lies at the heart of higher thought. when very smart people report on how they solved a particular problem, they never describe anything like juggling ideas around in their heads. somehow i doubt Einstein would have scored off the charts on some of these working memory tasks like dual N back.

Nonsense. How do you think you can keep track of many, many variables and relationships between mathematical lines without having high working memory? Working memory doesn't have much to do with intelligence? Yeah, no. It correlates extremely strongly with every single other known subfactor of g. This idea that a mathematical genius wouldn't have strong working memory is hilarious

I was still in data collection mode in my early 20s. That is, I was still trying to understand and put things together (medicine). The interesting thing about mathematicians, if it is true that they are at their best in their early 20s, is that they are well beyond that level. They are already applying and creating. Medicine requires knowledge retention, implementation, and revision. It's a continuous cycle of making mistakes, taking in new information, and revising cognitive maps. There aren't many final answers.

Maybe someone can help me find this clip: I’m looking for a clip of one of Lex’ podcasts, but I can’t remember who the guest was. It was a guy talking about psychological experiments where they put people in different groups (digitally I think), sometimes these groups were random and even made up, but people would always favor there in-group over the other group even when the group they we’re part of was just made up and had nothing but just a made up name. Does someone know what I’m looking for?

When you are trying to think of the next step forward, the way to solve the problem of the next algorith.ic step, you relinquish the logic brain and reenter the imaginative daydream state. With any creative enterprise you have to do this, keeping the rules of the artform present but not conscious in your mind whole you imagine the reconfiguration of your material. It's imagination of a configuration of code which conforms to the strict set of rules in the computer 'language' definition, which you then try, test, fail, reimagine. It's the activity of a hunter trying to use knowledge of the rules (hunting ground, prey's behaviour, weaponry) to obtain the desired result. Same process. The hunter doesn't question it. The hunter just tries, tests, fails, analyses, imagines a new idea, then tries again.

So,you could be really intelligent but low working memory then you could be bad in Maths and programing and on other hand average Intelligence but great working memory you can be great in maths and programing. But what basis ? See,in maths or programming you have three steps involved . 1) Understanding small bits . 2)Associating small bits together. 3)Coming to a solution. So,with poor working memory you get stuck on step 2.

Apologies, but my working memory and overall intelligence are much, let's say, 10,000% better now at the age of 33 than when I was in my twenties. I completely changed my career in two years, learning C++ for UE, Houdini, Python, VEX, math, and more. While I hold the utmost respect for Huberman, I don't agree with him about age and cognitive abilities. Some of my friends share the same experience... they speak more eloquently, and their brains function much more smoothly at this age, 30-35, than they did in their twenties. The notion that mental abilities decline after 25 is just absurd. If you have financial support and curiosity, and you're not too old, say 80++, you can learn whatever you want. The issue is about mental exhaustion, not age. My professor at the university learned Matlab and Python at the age of 81 in just three months because he had the gumption and will. Guys, Believing in yourself and curiosity are everything. Eat healthy and do what you love. Cheers!
