Used to (15-17). Switched to cigarettes, they feel less addictive. When I don't smoke for >10 hours I feel overall fine, just a little nudge. When I didn't vape for 4 hours, I felt awful withdrawals, stomach pain, headaches, etc... Edit: tobacco in cigarettes and salt nicotine are chemically different, therefore have a different effect on the smoker.

Thanks for the episode! As a non-smoker I find it wild how normalized vaping is around me and that it’s treated way better than cigs, despite there not being a long-term research on its affects on health. However, I’d like to hear more about the psychological effect of vaping. Because personally i know a few people who tried to quit vaping and they said it was terribly hard because vaping is very accessible. You can vape anywhere at anytime. And it was hard to keep track of how much nicotine you digest. Btw, I’d love to hearepisodes on caffeine and sugar addictions. They’re even more normalized than smoking or alcohol it be nice to learn the effects it has. As well as hear why Corry hates it lol. Sincerely, your avid listener and caffeine addict

I think it would have been good to have mentioned the environmental impact if vaping, all of the plastic and batteries that just get thrown away every day
@einaccount51932 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Especially since single-use vape pens often don't use single-use batteries(which would be bad enough), but lithium-ion batteries, which are rechargable (except that you can't with these vapes because there is no charger, They are supposed to be single use after all). Those are the same ones we use in phones and EVs. They contain rare metals, which are mined under horrible conditions for both the environment and the workers. They could be put to much better use than dingle-use vape pens, which many people don't even recycle, which is also not very easy. Basically you're buying the same tech as a refillable, rechargeable vape, but fully encased in plastic so you can't refill or recharge it. So maybe don't.

I smoked/vaped for ten years, mostly vaped but had periods of smoking analogs (lol). It took several attempts over a couple of years to quit. The pandemic actually sealed the deal for me - like most people I barely left my house, meaning no vape shop, no corner store, nothing. I had already successfully cut down quite a bit, which was pretty hard because I'd always been a chain smoker. One day I finally ran out of smokes and vapes and just went cold turkey from there. Marijuana actually helped especially in that first week, thank God for living in a legal state with delivery lmao. It's been about two and a half years & I'm so glad I quit. Like many smokers I was experiencing dental issues and chronic cough, had already lost two teeth by the age of thirty. The cough was gone in about six months. I had cravings for about a year but now I'm back to being revolted by the smell of cigarettes as most non smokers are. Kinda bewildering now how I used to think it smelled good. To anyone quitting or wanting to quit, I wish you good luck! Cut down slowly, ignore every other impulse, then every two, every three, etc. The first week of being totally off does suck but it's mind over matter, you can do it!

I don't vape or smoke and never have. I have never even tried either of those. If I happen to inhale some smoke from a nearby smoker it often just makes me cough my lungs out. I have a lot of people around me who smoke or vape though, and this helped me filter information to help them stop smoking - which has been my goal from the start. Sadly some of them cannot mentally live without it due to high stress levels. Great podcast again! It's long overdue that tobacco corporations feel the consequences of their actions.
@dardega2 жыл бұрын
I switched to vaping three months ago after smoking for 16 years. My observations: lung health improved drastically, I got rid of my smokers cough after just a week; I'm gradually cutting back the amount of nicotine I use in my vape, and for now it goes fine; psychologically vaping substitutes my smoking habit perfectly, I feel zero cravings for cigarettes now. What I noticed from a social perspective - long-time smokers around me seem to be weirdly cautious about vaping. I say "weirdly" because I can't count anymore the times when someone who's smoking at the very moment takes their time to tell me how vaping is more dangerous, actually. I agree that there is still lack of studies for long-term effects of vaping, but we have plenty for the long-term effects of smoking. So if I can't help but to stand where I might get hit by something, I prefer to wait on the bicycle lane and see what's coming, than to stay on train tracks where we know what's coming.

For US residents here's an interesting legal fact about tobacco. It is legal in all 50 states to grow tobacco at home, provided you do not sell or distribute it. You'd need a license for that. There are several reasons you'd want to grow tobacco other than personal use. For one, the flowering variety Nicotiana alata produces some very pretty flowers and the pollinators love it. The Aztec variety Nicotiana rustica has the highest concentration of nicotine and is commonly used to make an organic pesticide. If you want to try growing it, the best way to germinate the seeds is to sprinkle them on the soil surface and do not bury them. Mist them in and cover them with a humidity dome. Be careful because the seeds are very tiny.
@rincentvanuggh19112 жыл бұрын
One reason they purified nicotine out of tobacco was as a pesticide, before better ones existed gardeners would basically hot box a greenhouse with nicotine if it had bugs eating all the plants. The concentration of nicotine in this case was very toxic so you wouldn't use this to consume nicotine, just to kill pests. My grandad used to do it.

The shamanic practice of blowing something up someones nose is called Hapé or Rapé (emphasis on the e) and can be done both to stimulate or to calm depending on what you use, there is even DMT in some of the powders. I don't use it myself but I do know fellow shamans and shamanic healers/practitioners both in America and Europe that practice it. Among other things it makes the client release mental blockages around trauma and it's used in shamanic treatments for childhood trauma among other things. I come from the nordic practice where we would, if we use similar practices (I have never felt the need to) would most probably use some kind of mushrooms instead. I neither condone or condemn the practice, I just don't use any perception changing substances in my practice. I use my drum, some tea of heather, lavender and chamomile and my (what I have been told is) soothing (and slightly hypnotising) voice. I have led people in guided meditations next to a saw mill and the participants told me afterwards that as soon as I started talking they heard nothing but my voice. So, no need for substances in my view. And yes, snus! We have that in Sweden, extremely popular. I think it's because you can hide it farely well and do it in places you can¨t smoke, and also because the only person you are harming is yourself. No second hand smoking.

Interesting thing is, a man named Herbert A. Gilbert filed a patent in 1963 for an electronic cigarette that was named “the smokeless”, and it was patented in August of 1965 (U.S. Patent No. 3,200,819). I’m not sure if that product was ever actually sold, or even if it contained any nicotine, but I still think it’s an interesting fact
@alexlail7481 Жыл бұрын
Keep in mind snuff was originally snorted. Also nicotine was used as a pesticide as far back as the 1700s and my understanding is that it fell out of favor once other pesticides were available due to the dangers of use... though it seems odd to those with single payer health care in the US hospitals are not really incentivized to encourage smoking because they are required by law to provide treatment thru the emergency room required to stabilize a individual regardless of ability to pay... and eat the cost if they cannot. I'm not suggesting that this is a wonderful solution to the single payer system. But it has been documented that those who are uninsured and cannot pay end up using the emergency room as primary care... smoking related illnesses and other health issues experienced by those people end up costing hospitals quite a bit.

Popcorn lung can be caused by a lot of things but diacetyl was the worry with vapes. The EU banned the use of it in e-cigarettes though so there shouldn’t be much risk of that at all. Ultimately vaping seems to be far safer than smoking & is recommended by the NHS as a tool to quit smoking

I don't think people should be free to choose whether they smoke or not. Nobody asked me if I was okay with watching half of my family slowly perish in a horribly painful way while they're starting to loose any sense of self due to effectively being overdosed by morphine in order to suppress the pain. Literally nobody asked me if I was okay with that outcome, but I was still forced through that trauma as a child.

Overall, I think this episode was pretty fair and accurate, but I did notice that Corry mentioned several times that the only reason people continue to smoke is for the nicotine. While this may be true for cigarettes, there are also people who smoke pipe tobacco, which could be done with just straight tobacco without nicotine. To be fair though, this is probably a small minority of all smokers. Also just wanted to mention, before the colonizers invaded what is now called North America, tobacco was already an important and culturally significant substance for many Indigenous people. Some tribes consider tobacco sacred and/ or a gift from The Creator and it plays a role in ceremonies. Again, to be fair, this probably doesn’t really have much relevance to vaping, but it’s good to know the history/ other uses, I think. Btw, I am not trying to advocate for tobacco. I hate smoking and have no interest in it myself, but just trying to present another possible perspective.

Okay, three things that appear to have been completely missed in this otherwise very good video... 1) How addictive is nicotine? You bring up several times that nicotine is "very addictive"... But how addictive is it? Where's the science to back it up? The answer is: nobody knows how addictive nicotine is because it has been impossible to addict lab animals to nicotine so science has not been able to measure how addictive it is. Even of caffeine we do know how addictive it is because we were able to measure it because we were able to addict lab animals to caffeine... But nicotine? Nope. It's just not very addictive at all, apparently... (More on why it does /appear/ to be very addictive to /some/ people in my third point...) 2) Is anybody actually going from vaping to smoking? That vaping is a gateway to smoking is something that is often brought up - but never backed up by science. As far as I know, nobody /who has never smoked before/ has moved from vaping to smoking. The reason is quite clear: cigarette smoke has a HORRIBLE taste. Why in the world would anybody in their right mind switch from tasty strawberry flavoured vapes to horrible ashtray flavoured cigarettes if they can just stick with the nice flavours of vapes? 3) Is there any use to nicotine? It's mentioned in the video that nicotine has no use... Oh but it does, at least, for many people. Nicotine actually has medicinal qualities for people with various forms of neurodivergence. For autistic people, nicotine has a similar effect as ritalin (adderal) for ADHD folks. 99% of people diagnosed with schizophrenia smoke or vape and are unable to kick that "habit" - not because they're prone to addictions, but because nicotine has an effect on their brain that helps them cope with the effects of schizophrenia. Nicotine is actually currently being used as a drug for Parkinson's disease because it has better positive effects and fewer side effects than other available drugs. Some research also appears to suggest that nicotine may protect against Alzheimer's disease. The long and short of it is, most people who are "severely addicted" to nicotine aren't truly addicted - they're self-medicating. Personally, I am autistic and I know from experience that nicotine helps me function better in a society that generally does not cater to my autistic needs. It just makes my brain work better. Some 10 years ago, I switched from smoking to vaping and ever since then, I've consistently consumed about the same daily amount of nicotine. Apparently, that's the dosage I require for optimal functioning. I've also tried other methods of nicotine delivery, like patches, but those work less well. For example, when I'm in a situation that is particularly stressful for my autistic brain, I may need an instant nicotine boost to help myself through it. Vaping allows me much better control of my nicotine intake than other methods. And, well, it just tastes nice, so that's a perk. :D
