Happy to see mention of the MythBusters. Their experiments are done more for entertainment than for experimental validity, but that isn't really important. For myself and probably a lot of other people here, they were the people that introduced us to science and taught us that it was interesting.

Experimentation is only a step of the scientific process but it is a very important because it always a) Given the biologists a correct result b) Allow rejection of some alternative hypothesis c) Ensure that hypothesis can be confirmed with certainty d) Gives scientists a chance to work in the laboratory

I was just explaining this to a 4th grader in my after school program and her study sheet did not make it easy to understand the differences and importance of independent and dependent variables. I showed her using the classic balls of different sizes and hitting a ball with a foam hockey stick and a plastic bat...I hope I made it easier and didn't confuse her. I wasn't thinking how the hypothesis itself reveals your variables so it seems I neglected the easiest explanation, thanks for that.

Summary • The scientific method consists of making observations, formulating a hypothesis, testing the hypothesis with new observations, making a new hypothesis if the new observations contradict the old hypothesis, or continuing to test the hypothesis if the observations agree. • A hypothesis is a tentative explanation that can be tested by further observation. • A theory is a hypothesis that has been supported with repeated testing. • A scientific law is a statement that summarizes the results of many observations. • Experimental data must be verified by reproduction from other scientists. • Theories must agree with all observations made on the phenomenon under study. • Theories are continually tested, forever. Abu 'Ali al-Hasa I am sure it won't help u now but still...

I think it's important to say, that the "truth" is something very dynamic. Even if we think we know how something is working (proven with experiments), we can always be proven wrong (keep in mind that our truth has often a p value of 0.05-0.01 and technology improves constantly to discover new thing). Our knowledge of science is just a snapshot, and it will advance in the future. I think it's very importent to think critically and also keep questioning the "thinks we know".

Can the scientific method verify itself? Just curious.
@shadowstrike52996 жыл бұрын
The scientific method is just a logical tool. Since its more mental than anything else it can’t been “verified” yet it still works.
@feynstein10046 жыл бұрын
Couldn't you argue that because it works, that's kind of a verification?
@BrianTarr6 жыл бұрын
sure, it works by inductive reasoning. you drop an apple 999 times, you can reason that it will drop again the next time you let it go. by the same token, the scientific method creates predictive models which can be verified or falsified by further experiments. the more a model is verified, the more confident you can be in it, and the more successful the models are, the more confident you can be in the "model-making process" (i.e., the scientific method). this doesn't provide a priori justification, and thus requires trial and error, but the device you're using to read this comment is just one piece of the tons of evidence that science works!
