1. volleyball in the philippines now enjoys the same popularity as basketball (i daresay) and share in the same devoted, passionate fanbase. Just as we are as immersed in loveteams, network wars and political leanings. the volleyball crowd in the states has yet to reach the same pinnacle, so in-game outbursts or cockiness seem so alien to them. Add to the fact that volleyball is a non-contact team sport. 2. our sports culture for the longest time has only been basketball and boxing both of which tolerate this aspect of the sport. All Filipinos are exposed to this gamesmanship and with a new and greater audience getting drawn to volleyball, it was a natural transition to happen. 3. Part of any competition is the mental aspect. The ability to keep focus through adversity, the toughness to pick yourself up despite odds and the will to win over merely NOT losing. Swag works two ways for the competitive athlete. First, it's a way to shift momentum back to your favor even when there is no momentum. It's a mental "c'mon!" that is aided by a self induced biochemical shot of adrenaline throughout your body after a well executed play perhaps. The other way is to use swag to shift the opponent's focus. Take the opponent's head out of the game. Lull the opponent to focus entirely on the opponent instead of technique. Think ad hominem arguments but in sport play. So I say, let the girls play! PS: If coach air finds it too disturbing, get her indoctrinated to new zealand black's pre-game haka. Now that's taunting.

@Raymond Andaya you are correct. in fact the nz blacks have been criticized for cultural appropriation for utilizing the haka in the manner that they do.

The fans love the intensity of the game. Players add some "swag" to get the fans involved.. Part of the game.. But we need moderation for that, we don't want to degrade the player on the losing team.

Well, pinoy eh. They don't mind being called barbaric and cheap kaya iniincorporate nila sa culture ng sports na toh ang swag. Tama si Dzi, it is not part of the culture sa US and I must say sa iba pang mga countries na maganda ang volleyball program and see? Successful ang mga players nila. Coach Air is right too, nakakawala ng focus ang pag sswag na yan. Imbes n ang maging goal ng player is to win and to learn, minsan nccloud ng pagsswag yung real goals nila. Just saying.
