There are five major areas of plastic waste spread over the five oceans of the planet.
The most extensive one is in the Pacific Ocean.
It measures nearly 3 million square kilometers, or about six times the area of France.
It is composed of microplastic particles extending to thirty-meter depth.
The plastic material does not decompose in the water, it breaks up into thousands of microparticles, threatening many species, including birds, fish, marine mammals, shellfish, and is then found in our dishes.
Protecting the oceans is also preserving our health.
