Pete’s philosophy has always been to keep the defense off the field for as long as possible with establishing the run early and then pull away at the end of the 4th quarter with play action passes. It worked when Seattle had a lock down defense; however, now that they have a weaker defense and were getting outplayed all 3 quarters they had to do what is most logical and let Russ takeover early and get a significant lead. Hoping this change is here to stay - Russ deserves an MVP

One big issue with the old philosophy of time of possession and long drives was that we were routinely at the bottom of the league in three and outs. We were usually roughly top 10 in time of possession, but outside Wilson there wasn't a lot of success on a per play basis. My go to though was we've seen the Bears, Vikings, etc have decent offenses with mediocre QBs. If we had a mediocre QB they'd be injured within a week and we'd lose horribly.

I think what drilled in this run-heavy offense was having Marshawn Lynch on the team. I think he covered up team weaknesses with his amazing play. Tyler Fernandes I gotta disagree on that one. Last year, before Stafford went down, the Lions only lost one game by more than a possession and most of that was without their starting RB. They’re right on the brink of building the best Lions team we’ve seen in a very long while. It takes time to build the Belichickian-style team that Patricia wants to build, and if the Lions weren’t going to be patient with him, they shouldn’t have hired him to begin with.

7:22 people underestimate how hard it is to throw a slant-go without the safety picking it off. Because of the fact that you need to pump and look aggressively to make the corner jump, you're giving the safety all he needs to pick it off, but if you don't, the corner won't bite. It's sort of a catch 22, but Russell has underrated eye discipline and is able to pump the corner, THEN move his eyes back to the safety to hold him back the go back AGAIN to deliver the ball to his receiver, all with great fluidity in the very thin time window allowed by the pass rush and free safety

Can you do an analytics video on the success of a team based on how many times they run the ball after a 1st down incompletion. I see this time and time again where a team does throw on 1st down but its incomplete and then they do a run on 2nd for no gain and now they are in a 3rd and long. I would like to know how often this pans out in the long run for teams rather than passing again on 2nd down.

It is absolutely criminal that Cam Newton has an MVP, and Russell Wilson doesn't even have an MVP vote. Wilson is an excellent athlete, one of the finest running quarterbacks ever to play the game, and despite that fact has not missed a start in his career, unlike Newton. Wilson is the far better decision-maker, with vastly fewer turnovers, and is obviously superior to Newton in basically every passing metric, from ANY/A to passer rating to Total QBR to TD/INT ratio to completion percentage to plain passing yards, all while on average throwing significantly deeper passes. Wilson is, through all of this obvious excellence, a team-focused player, who consistently praises teammates and coaches before taking any credit for himself, and by all accounts I have seen is a superb leader through adversity, all of which is in sharp contrast to Newton, who can't seem to get enough of the spotlight, right up until things start to go wrong that he can't blame on anyone else. Can anyone help me out here? How does Newton have an MVP while Wilson does not, considering Wilson's individual quarterback performance was better than Newton's in his MVP season by every metric other than plain wins and losses? In any event, excellent breakdown as always, and I hope Wilson begins to get the kind of recognition he deserves for his level of play in the context of some more intelligently aggressive playcalling. I'm a Packer fan, and though that NFC championship game still hurts, through the first three quarters I could see Seattle leaving points on the field. It will be interesting to see if they can maintain their current level of offensive output this year.

Thank you for putting it into words. I've been tired of people saying "he was cooking in 2017 when he was the only good player and they missed the playoffs". Like it's more about aggressive play-calling and not trying to win every game 10-7

knowing how the season ended, as soon as Schotenheimer's play calling got predictable and Russ struggled Pete went back to Run first and the offense stalled.

Having Elite QB like Russ and Mahomes is great start. QB who can process information of coverages, and make adjustments if there changes are keys to that type of offense. Having playmakers like Kelce, Tyreek Hill, DK, and Lockett boost the offense effectiveness. Having a good playcaller can help to.

I agree with all of this, but this week we might actually want to focus on the run game. NE lost Dont'a Hightower, Jamie Collins, AND Kyle Van Noy - they got no LBs and their secondary is fucking stacked. It isn't just Stephon Gilmore, they've got like 7 good DBs

Shotty & Russell addressed this subtly by saying, "they take what the defense gives them." If BB and Pats give them the Run, they will take it. Take the win. :)

@Brett Kollmann long time fan, could you please take a look at what is going with vikings offence, after this week 2 and week 1 loss i am bit clueless to what is going on, is it diggs missing, kirk not playing as 84 million QB, run game being a bit iffy or just general playing calling, i aware the O-line ins't the best, but in my opionion kirk seems to be a bit jumpy inside the pocket. i would love a indepth analyzes from you
