And even he (Matthew) was surprised of what he said. - Just one word, "daughter" changed and healed Anne 's broken heart in an instant.. . I was really, REALLY impressed by this twist in Anne' s story. I cried.

Just finished watching this episode, such a rollercoaster of emotions. Everyone played their part to perfection. It's been such a long time since I felt so much with such simple storyline. The part that hit me the most is when Anne was almost kidnapped. But since she's an orphaned, she immediately saw the trap and ran away. Who would have thought being an orphan can actually put one at advantage one day?

I think that this show is great and it's quintessentially so Canadian! I like the honesty that this new series brings and I'll be watching. Everyone can relate to Anne in so many levels from rejection, belonging, to relief. By the way, who did the opening credit of the show? It's so artsy.

Humanity being what it is, I have no doubt that creepy stuff happened in L.M. Montgomery's era, but this strange man trying to pick up kids in the train station just does not fit the narrative. Matthew was a stranger to Anne, and yet he picked her up to take her back to Green Gables, and she went with him willingly; orphan children were passed around on a word and maybe a handshake (which is why the mistake of sending a girl happened in the first place). Children were much more independent and mature in that time, it seems; there was also much less fear about strangers' behaviours. This incident just seems weird in this context. I'm not an utter book purist, but I'm not digging this interpretation yet -- too off-track in some ways.

I think it had less to do about the man being a stranger and more to do with him using her "family" as an excuse to get her into his carriage and then off to who knows where since she's an orphan and was harshly reminded of that fact in the events leading up to that moment.

It certainly is a darker view of the times. I'm trying to remember if Matthew identifies himself by name at the station, but at least it was a small town where everyone knew everyone, instead of a large station when people wouldn't know if a predator was lurking in the crowd.

so I did watch the first episode and it was actually pretty great, though not "perfect" I did like it. Despite Megan Follows being irreplaceable in my heart, Amybeth McNulty is charming and captures a different side of Anne while keeping the parts that really matter ... Getting in Jane Eyre parallels didn't hurt my love of Anne either (Jane and Anne are like two of my fave literary heroines ever). I plan on watching the rest of the series when it comes out properly on US Netflix. That being said... The trailer for episode 2 looked completely different.... IDK. Also, I just need to properly meet Gil and then cry about Jonathan Crombie.

CBC showing its inability to continue the next seasons, it only reinforces how weak they are, it does not even have the courage to sell the rights to NETFLIX, which can and has the capacity to continue the series, now, all over the world, sees CBC as a weak and petty company, with no ability to finish the series.

Feminism! Suffragettes! The story needs to be current to be relevant! You can't take things within the context of the time! Everything must be politically correct! Storytelling has to be rife with tangible lessons, it is not simply enough to let the subtleties of character and narrative tone permeate the atmosphere of the story allowing for a genuine appreciation of the story and the overarching themes of childhood, imagination, innocence, hope, home, family, faith, and life.

I don't get why you think it wasn't taken with the context of time. This version felt far more realistic than the previous ones. Realistically, life was more difficult for an orphan back then and this version is not as clean and romanticised. Also, I thought that the darker interpretation gave more credit to Anne. You can appreciate the moments of joy and imagination much more because you know what she's been through.
